I feel like the birds at my house have a hard time with the circle ring version so I put duet balls in it instead and use a platform to put peanuts in but I really want to get one of those mesh ones

Good info! I'm new to feeding bird with a feeder but have enjoyed giving shelled peanuts to Blue Jays in the past. I appreciate considering ways to get the birds to linger rather than only hit-and-runs :-)

I bought a big bag of raw peanuts... On the bag though it says to not feed animals raw in-shell peanuts without cooking them first? Should I roast em? Something about an inhibitor or something? For birds specifically. It seems to be hard to find info regarding this.

That warning is due to parrots. Some parrots are know to have some type of negative reaction to them. We have been feeding them to wild birds safely for many years.

I have a big problem with squirrels. I expect that they are going to get peanuts no matter what I do. I've tried several different "squirrel proof" feeders. They didn't work. I feed my birds in an area with plenty of trees and raptors, too. If I put a pole and baffle up, and put it 10 feet away from a jumping point my songbirds would be more at risk of becoming lunch for a hawk or falcon. So, here's my question. And, I think I know the answer. When the squirrels find the peanut feeders shown in this video, are they most likely going to live there until the peanuts are gone? Is it difficult for them to eat peanuts from these feeders? Thanks Much, West Virginia Bird Lover

Hi, would something like this be good for magpies and deter pigeons? Right now I'm feeding magpies in-shell peanuts, which is good because the pigeons can't open them, but I'm worried they're just caching most of them, so they end up going to waste.

Yes, Magpies are in the same family as jays. I limit the amount I put out each day because they will store many of them. If pigeons are major problems, you may consider using cages for your feeders. Small perches on tube feeders help deter them as well.

There are gulls in parking lots I try to practice my in flight photography. Is it ok if gulls eat peanuts in shells.? Thank you for taking the time. To answer.

I find that popcorn works great for getting the gulls down for great photos though I'm sure they could figure out the peanuts.

Hello! My peanuts stay in the feeder for a long while and I'm afraid that during rainy periods they'd get moldy. Should I take the peanuts inside during rainy days or are they safe in the rain?

Peanuts will go bad rapidly when wet. I use a hood on my peanut feeder to help keep them dry. Hanging them from under an eave also helps keep them dry. Keep in mind, you should not keep any seed in a feeder longer than a month. I would try only filling the peanut feeder about half full. The fall is generally slower at nut feeders because acorns are available but their activity tends to really pick up mid-winter through spring.

Any way to feed peanuts in the shell without squirrels getting them?
@MarksBackyardBirds
3 жыл бұрын
Really only the classic squirrel proofing methods like a pole with a baffle 10 ft from any jumping surface. I also like hanging them in front of a window from under an eave.

@@MarksBackyardBirds so for those of us in an urban environment with feeders on decks it sounds like shelled peanuts in a squirrel proof feeder is really the way to go?
@MarksBackyardBirds

@@barco581 Squirrel proof feeders are great but many of them have small openings that do not favor in-shell peanuts. So yes, shelled peanuts are a better choice for your situation.
