My 7yr old son and I started keeping shrimp about a year ago and started with cherry. We have added some yellow and orange and it’s gone great. Plenty of breeding and haven’t really had any offspring that show lack of color and haven’t seen a single wild type. Sadly there’s only one place locally who carries them and it’s a bit pricey at 10 each. We moved everything to a 80g and are going to take everything out to do a nice aqua scape. We have ordered shrimp twice once all doa and never got it rectified sadly. The second we lost about half and they credited us for the loss and where great to work and talk to. We want to start line tanks and do about 10 varieties in 20 longs. Keep up the videos my son loves to watch em and looks forward to new ones when you release them!

Well I started out with about 10 to 15 of several colors about 6 months ago, or maybe a litle longer. All from Mark Shelly Aquatics. What an Amazing experience, all of his shrimp are so healthy and well taken care of, and when he shipped them to me I was shocked how well they all did. With his guidance and support my shrimp were all breeding and multiplying very soon after I got them. Now I have 10 tanks full of lots of beautiful shrimp in all sizes from tiny babies to large gorgeous adults. I am beginning to sell some of my shrimp now to local folks and fish stores. Thanks to all of Marks help and Instructions through out the entire process. Having lots of fun, and enjoying watching all the shrimp grow and multiply! Easy, fun, relaxing and it brings me so much joy each day now !! Well I guess I have mostly natural (lightly planted with stem plants and also moss) tanks full of shrimp that I am line breeding (he has already done such a great job on improving his lines) that I am completely comfortable with just culling a few shrimp to my Skitttles tank now. Honestly most of them are breeding true nice lines with wonderfully colored, healthy shrimp. It almost feels like cheating, when I hear about so many others who have really struggled getting started and have so many bad experiences with shrimp in the beginning. He answered every question I had quickly and was so helpful that it truly has been fun and easy. Thanks Mark for EVERYTHING !

I also have my Skittles tank more densly planted and decorated, because I don't need to cull this tank. I only rarely catch shrimp from this tank, when I feed them in the very front of the tank that is more open for visual affects. Very easy ! Again such pleasure and fun for me! I love watching these shrimp grow and see what colors I get.

Love it! Envious of this number of shrimps... I am trying to get there and get a black and red line going. Lol realized I'm trying to go too natural. There are a million hides in my main tanks... And I keep getting clears. Thanks for the ideas.

Make sure you get real bloody marys, then mix them with blackrose. That would probably be a really good red and black line. Bloody marys and blacks are really close. You will always get a fair bit of wilds mixing, but with time and persistence, you can shape them into how you want them to be. When you start mixing things to make things, you are just beginning a very long journey, lol. I chat with a guy who bought one of my skittles packs like 2 years ago, he puts wilds they make into community tanks or sells/trades them. He has tons of really nice shrimp, he really has achieved a truely beautiful skittles tank. My skittles tank actually was started as a shrimp tank with my first blackrose line. They were a terrible line and really maybe made 30% shrimp that were keepers. I could do it now, but just didnt have the time back then. Started off just putting the dark blues that the blackroses threw and that was an awesome tank, had the best blue red rilis I have ever seen pop up in there. It was all over the place, but it was lots of the same all over the place with a few bit of wilds mixed it. Now skittles is a catch all for all the non keepers of projects, but thats how it started. You could probably achieve the same thing by getting a blackrose line and letting it go wild, but only culling out the bad wild types. Blackroses will throw red to brown to blue, bloody marys are the reds, so thats why I say blackrose and real bloody marys, not reds someone is selling as bloody marys. Reds blues and black look cool together.

@@MarkShellyAquatics Thanks for the details!! I really liked the 3rd method you described to get a nice line going. A little more clinical and smaller tanks. Right now I'm trying two different 90g filled with plants. I can't even tell how many shrimp I have to be honest... Just thought I'd be looking more like your tanks by now 😂😂😂

@mrWonderphilly they dont all boom all the time. Some of my tanks get too cold in the winter and dont do much, some lines can be boom and bust too. Blue jellies have always sorta been that way with me over the years. They will go from almost no breeding at all to every single female is berried and the walls are crawling with pee wee shrimp. Some new lines can be slow going at first, also depends where you got the shrimp from too.

Im in love with this lifestyle. I try to educate my co workers, family and friends on the fundamentals in the aquatic arts. Today I was planning on having a “ shrimp party” my plan was to educate some friends about keeping shrimp not only alive but to thrive as well. Unfortunately no one showed up🥹

Shrimp keeping is definitely part of the aquarium hobby, but can definitely be a bit more nuanced than fish most people are keeping. Also the health and quality of 90% of neo shrimp being sold is definitely subpar which causes so man new people to get discouraged with shrimp and give up.

I just got into shrimp keeping about 3 months ago, got a colony of 6 I know a bit small, but I believe one or two of them are berried and breeding size now the females. And it’s been going great! Tomorrow I’m going to a local aquarium meet up and getting some nice cherries for 1$ a piece! I’m a bit new to all of this so it’s been a absolute blast to get into something new in the aquarium hobby. I really appreciate the video ya made its brought some new ideas into what I plan on doing and some great insight for sure. Great video man!

I'm in the process of launching some breeding projects, for the fun and love of it, and building my rack and this is very helpfull infos, unfortunetly I won't have enough tanks to set up all 3 types for every lineages that I want to keep but if wifey let me expand in the future I will do that ! I have 2 community 30gal that will serve as cull tanks, 4 15 to 20gal that will be, now I seen this video, line tanks and 3 little 10gal that will be used as project tanks ! Thanks for all this usefull content ! If in the future you could make content on how exactly you select your shrimps, what you consider the standard for each type you keep and what you choose to improve, if its not a secret of yours, it could be very interesting imo !

I've kept shrimp for a few years now, but started off interested in aquascaping and found it difficult it dumb down my tanks for the shrimps sake, but my passion for shrimp has overtaken so now I don't mind about creating that special scene, although I've been attempting to find a good balance between them. Thanks for the vid, it would be a dream to have enough shrimp to sell, sometimes I feel it might be inevitable with the breeding taking off, what else do you do with them all?
@MarkShellyAquatics
8 ай бұрын
Yep, it's different for everyone, for sure. It took me 7 years to get to this point. There really is nothing special other than sticking with it for years at a time. 1st 5 years I was only home on the weekend because of work most of the time. I've been doing it as my full-time thing for about a year and a half now. The more time you can put into it, the more you learn. To sell 1000s every month like I do to make a living, you gotta maintain 10s of 1000s to be a sustainable breeding operation. I have to purposely slow down my sales because I only sell what I breed myself, so having too many shrimp isn't really a problem luckily.

I plan on keeping some snowball neocarinda. Whats your guys picks for plant's to help give them the best hiding spots from endlers. I want the shrimp be awesome roommates and workers for the endlers paying rent by eating up the extra stuff the endlers arent and i dont mind some babies getting picked off but of course i want the shrimp to be able maintain a good population.

What kind of substrate are you using
@MarkShellyAquatics

All neo tanks are just different kinds of inert sand. With neos you really just want plain sand or gravel, preferably one that will make the shrimp look their best. Black sand is best in most cases, for that I use blasting sand.

When I was a kid I did community tanks, then like high school to early 20s I did cichlids poorly lol. Then got into planted tanks. I ended up just having a 20g planted tank loaded with crypyts, like more crypts than water in it lol. Got a small group of the best guppies at petco and that was my only tank for years. Went like 9 years before I took it down. All those years my obsession was my goldfish ponds outside lol.
