How lucky are you? Does luck have anything to do with your life?
When you ask any successful person how they managed to achieve that much, not everyone but many of them would say i just got lucky! Even though they are trying to be modest, the luck they mean is being open to opportunity- being in the right place at the right time and how does that happen? That is explained with scientific evidence in the book ‘ the luck factor’ written by Richard Wiseman. He spent his career studying luck and how we perceive luck in our life. After years of research as a psychologist,he found that luck is completely a matter of how we choose to look at our lives.
He conducted a lot of experiments before he came to a conclusion, and one such experiments has separated people who considered themselves lucky from those who didnt- the two groups were asked to read a newspaper and count the number of photographs in the newspaper and report to him- the lucky people or who considered themselves lucky- found the answer on page 2 written in bold letters- stop counting there are 43 photographs- proving that they were open minded and didn't let doubt and negativity stop them from winning.
So here are 4 things about luck we can learn from this book based on scientific evidence to make the most out of luck in our lives
Opportunities need to be created
His experiments and research showed that people who thought they were lucky usually have a good network of people who lead them to opportunities in amazing ways, they don't have a closed mindset and don't just follow one single path blindly … they are always open to opportunities and trying out new things which is making them lucky, and putting them in a position to grab the best opportunity while being exposed to a lot of them. There is this story about quality and quantity- in which a group of people were asked to create a pot- one group was asked to create just one pot using the knowledge they were provided and the second group was asked to create as many pots as they like but submit the best pot- at the end the best pots came from the group which produced more pots than the one which produced only one pot, meaning the more the quantity the more the quality- explaining the role of being open to making mistakes and experimenting rather than sticking to a single path and expecting it to work out no matter what !
Luck is in believing your instincts
The people that considered themselves lucky usually followed their gut feeling or instincts- this they did by practising spirituality or doing things like meditation and prayer which gave them clarity on which instincts to pursue and which ones to not. The research he conducted showed that when they followed their instincts rather than being doubtful, they usually succeeded.
Luck is a feeling-
Lucky people possess a strong faith that their luck will give them positive results even if the probability of success says otherwise and they see all interactions as they have as possible steps to a successful future and that everyone they meet is somehow wanting to see them achieve their goals rather than seeing people as those who don't want them to succeed.
There is no fate -
Lucky people do not believe in fate , they always focus on the silver linings or the positive aspects of any situation. They even believe that everything whether good or bad happens to us for a reason and even if something looks unpromising, the results will be positive.
All this narrows down to one thing- having the right attitude is the first and foremost thing which will determine how lucky or unlucky we are. The right mindset is what will determine our success. There are no guarantees in life, but what most people call good luck gives us our ability to notice great opportunities and take advantage of them. Open hands are a start but an open mind is where luck is made !
