Saika I got Skyrim a year or so after it’s release for Christmas and I remember playing it on my older brother’s Xbox 360 in his room and he bought this really nice smelling Glade air freshener called Cashmere Woods that he would spray in his room after cracking open the window and it smelled like cinnamon and pine so it would usually smell like that as I felt the cold wind come in from outside while I would play Skyrim which would really immerse me into the world. Now anytime I play Skyrim during winter I buy some of that air freshener spray it, open the window to let the cold air in, and I play Skyrim and it takes me back to being 11 years old and exploring Skyrim with that sense of wonder, awe, and peace that I had when I played it as a kid.

I was in 6th grade. Never played rpg’s and my friend at school kept telling me about this game that his older brother was playing. He was talking about dudes running around with big axes killing dragons and I was immediately hooked. My dad took me to the store later that day to go get the game. I went in an asked the guy at the front desk if they had it. He looked at me and said “you sure you want that game?” “It’s not a game for everyone”. I could tell he was probably super invested into the elder scrolls and he didn’t want some kid to pollute it. I nodded my head and said oh yea I do and I got the game. All I did after that was go to school come home and play. The idea of creating my own character and having that escape from my own reality was intoxicating. I could see a mountain out in the distance and could go climb it. It was an unbelievable experience for a young kid who never even heard of rpg’s before. The best explanation was that it felt like a sandbox. The main story was not that great but all the side stories made you feel like creating your own adventure. Also, you could have very different playstyles (a.k.a. stealth archer over and over 😂). Additionally, first-person and physics-based mechanics give a kind of immersion that is lost in games built around third-person and animation on-rails interactions. Believe this is the secret sauce for Bethesda titles. Also loved the Fallout 4 "feel"

I think on top of everything, it also came at a very good time because of the whole youtuber explosion. Skyrim's popularity skyrocketed and expanded in very many ways thanks to a firm community of what we now call "content creators" that did playthroughs of it. Here in Spain many people know Skyrim thanks to Rubius and others who helped popularize it for people who were not as knee-deep in the gaming world.

I'm surprised hardly anyone one seems to mention the soundtrack... coupled with all the other things that made this game magical to experience the first few times, the music just fit beautifully with the landscape and the overall storyline. Even just listening to the soundtrack by itself in a dark room (like right before you fall asleep) is super relaxing.

I started playing skyrim about 3 years ago, after not playing a video game since early ps3 era and a lot of gta4. Started skyrim and was so overwhelmed I'd get anxiety. Magic, alchemy, enchanted weapons, potions, scrolls, spells, dragon super powers, you're carrying to much, there's an elk with it's head stuck in a mountain, it was too much. I'd never played anything like it. Never played any arpg. I dove back in yesterday after watching a dougdoug video and realized, I can just do whatever I want. I'm not going to fail if I don't finish something in time. Now, I get it. Skyrim is awesome.

What made Skyrim great in my opinion was 3 things... Replayablity (Being able to do tons of different things & never getting the same outcome, you can be a family man, win a war, be a savior, a thief, a vampire, vampire slayer & so on...), Attention to detail, & most of all MODS. Mods in my a opinion made the best game I've ever played even better! God I hope they don't screw up ES6

To me the biggest draw to Skyrim (as well as Oblivion and Morrowind) is you can do whatever you want to do. I can play through the world and never play the main quest, or I can play all the quests. Nothing is linear and is very much the definition of open world. The fact that I can do what ever I want with my character and play them in whatever way I wish is a huge plus. Add in mods and you have whole new quests and worlds to play in. Not only that, Skyrim is easy to get into which makes it even more fun.

I think Very simply, Oblivion was the first game I played in the series, I’d heard of Morrowind from friends, but a new 360 and Oblivion got me hooked on the series. In fact I believe it was my first, first person open world RPG I’d ever played. A JRPG vet, I was instantly hooked at the freedom. And after 100s of hours of Oblivion, I was ready to be Dragonborn. Everything Oblivion did, Skyrim did better, with prettier graphics and MF Dragons! It was a whirlwind of an experience, sucking me in and never letting go. I think the scale just amped up and people were aware of Bethesda’s track record at that point with TESM and TESO, and the fallout games. It was just perfect timing. Thank you, 76 can never tarnish my love for this developer!
