FINALLY. My favorite TMNT show is getting some recognition. 2 things I love about this version of TMNT. 1) The TMNT are not superheroes. They do the right thing but they don't actively seek out crimes to fight. 2) The good guys don't always win. It makes the series feel more "realistic", keeps us on the edge of our seats and makes the victories all the more rewarding.
@singingwolf8997

I really like that the turtles don't always come out on top. Just the fact that we've seen pretty much all of them go through some serious emotional issues is so different from many similar shows. Leo's total tonal shift in season 4, for example, is honestly extremely relatable. While other shows would have the protagonists simply celebrating the defeat of the enemy, we see Leo dealing with the feeling of failure for nearly getting his family killed, regardless of their victory and clutch rescue. It affects his whole personality, even bordering on PTSD, which feels more realistic than "Hooray, we almost died, but we won anyway!".

But the 2003 series is the only one I really like. And the only one that I think is good. Years ago this showed me why 87 was bad. And when I got acquainted with the original comics already at a more conscious age, I was only convinced of this. The '87 series is terrible. TMNT 2003 season 1, as a series attempting to tell an ongoing story on an episodic basis, is almost perfectly paced and structured. It knows the right time to throw in a new twist. It knows the right time to take a break from the main story and build up intrigue for the A plot. And it knows the right time to go hog wild with action and character confrontations. Each emotional and narrative beat is delivered to a T, with the Shredder Strikes Back being an excellent example of a villain gaining the upper hand and Tales of Leo providing an excellent dramatic low point. Then, of course, Return to New York makes an exciting, action-packed climax, all the while making the Shredder more mysterious than ever with nothing but action set pieces (e.g. the presence of Foot Mystics, mutant Shredder clones, and of course that chilling ending shot). There are so many great character moments in this season, too. One of my favorite moments is during The Monster Hunter, where Leo is reveling in his failure to protect his family, and Raphael (who is characterized by his bluntness and quickness to action through anger) helps guide Leo out of his emotional rut by helping forge new katanas and jump back into action. Of course, we also have the Shredder, who is expertly voiced and characterized as the ultimate antagonistic force. A villain in a kids show who is heavily implied to have killed someone as early as the first episode. I get chills every time I see him walk out of that burning building in The Shredder Strikes Part 2. Season 1 is so close to perfect that the show never really reaches those heights again. Season 2 is a mixed bag, and Season 3 has a lot of great episodes but ultimately feels redundant because the Shredder plot was basically wrapped up in Return to New York (or more definitively, Secret Origins) but kept limping along anyway. At the very least, it should be interesting to see you cover those seasons. Speaking of which, I love the new format you've developed for this season. As much as I rewatch the DCAU videos, after a while the episode-by-episode approach eventually became 90% summary and 10% analysis. They became a shorter way of rewatching the season as opposed to content in their own right. This video strikes a good balance between summary and analysis and keeps the flow going. Unfortunately, there are a few casualties to the format. While I totally understand skipping over Garbageman, Fallen Angel, Lone Raph and Cub, and especially the Unconvincing Turtle Titan (an episode that is so wildly out of place compared to the rest of the series that it might as well be non-canon), the casualty is that you skipped over Nano. While a standalone, B Plot episode, the emotional components easily rival or exceed the best of BTAS or even JL.

Scottie Ray's voice acting as Shredder is iconic. As a character, I actually like the 2012 Shredder more because there's a tragic element about him and his immaturity and refusal to accept his own mistakes ends up costing him everything. However, you can't beat Scottie Ray's voice. Unlike Kevin Michael Richardson, he didn't have a particularly complex character to work with but he sounded like a demon that rose from the depths of hell. That's very fitting because season 5 revealed that the original Shredder literally WAS a demon in this universe and Ray was doing that voice right from the first episode, long before anybody would have told him about the demon Shredder.
@digitaltailsmon4096
2 жыл бұрын
I agree! This very year I actually learned who Scottie was or at least his name and his voice acting roles due to honestly one of the poorest casting decisions on 4kids with him playing the love interest in a show called Mew Mew Power or Tokyo Mew Mew as it's know everywhere else and well it's not the best role for him as he sounds way to old and it's distracting. But him as the Shredder and even Zane from Yugioh is where it is at.

I think the main difference is that Shredder in 2012 is like a genuine Shredder character, it's a modernization of the original cartoon enemy. 2003 Shredder is more of a fusion between two main villains from the og cartoon in an attempt to create a completely new character. They've combined Kraang and Shredder into Ch'rell, a completely original TMNT character. I see Ch'rell equally as innovating as Bishop for instance

What I always REALLY liked about the 03 series, is that each season would give you at least a few solo episodes with each turtle. So that way you could further bond with your favorite and come to have an understanding about a turtle you might not have liked previously. Leonardo will never be my favorite, simply cause as a younger sibling myself, I see a lot of my sister in him; the worrier, the RESPONSIBLE one, always having to listen to what they say, cause "THEY'RE THE OLDEST" never seeing eye to eye....but the episode Tales of Leo...seeing Raph break down like he did...it made me realize that sure you'll always butt heads but you'd rather be in that spot they're in then see them suffer yourself. 20:44 Walking into a story that was already unfolding without them. I like that that's a really good observation. The Shredder Strikes Back and Return to New York are wonderful episodes with great action and animation while also leaving room for the characters to breathe. 25:12 I actually think these episodes are really good for Mikey he's not only the one to land a hit on the bad guy but he's the one who manages to stop him. How often do you see that in stories like this? The most cowardly character is the one that saves the day. Also the 3rd live action movie gets a hard time but it does have this one really funny joke where Casey is watching these guys from feudal Japan and tries to teach them how to play Hockey. Japenese guys: Don't understand. Casey: Uh, just do what you saw on TV. Japenese guys :Oh (fight each other)

Season 1 starts out with a banger that truly hooks you in. Turtles interecting with the world, actually losing against Foot and the Shredder outright killing a guy at the end of the episode sent a message that things really did change from previous interpetation. Admittedly, they did reuse some frames when turtles fought Foot Ninja's but that a minor complaint on my part since the animation and art style were consistently great to the point that I really can't recall that it was ever less than good. Lightning and rain in episodes such as Shredder Strikes Back was beautiful and the addition of the show's soundtrack makes you really invested in every second of run time.

For a kids show, Stockman's fate was absolutely brutal. They play it off in such a comedic manner, given Stockman maintains his attitude and ego no matter how many times he gets "punished." It must've been horrifying having the Shredder haunt you every second of your life, threatening to dismember you until you are but a brain in a capsule, slave to his bidding. The episode where he turned into a zombie and went insane due to trauma was heartbreaking to watch, but the satisfaction of it is ruined when Bishop brings him back just cuz (the show went downhill after season 3.) Also, can we talk about the part where the male version of April O'Neal MANHANDLES his brain out of the capsule and into a robot suit? That alone should've been enough to kill Stockman, or at the least give him brain damage. Then again, realistically he should've died when Shredder turned him into a spider.

I feel like this show is often misconstrued, both by people nostalgic for the 80s show and fans of the 2012 show, as an example of peak 2000s hip grimdark edginess, when it really is not that at all. The show strikes a great balance between dramatic stakes, good humour and earnestness and has a tone not that different from the DCAU. Honestly, I think it's a better balance than what the 2012 show had in its early days, where that show kinda suffered from "irony poisoning". What I really love about the 2003 show is its earnestness. It throws so many bonkers sci-fi and fantasy tropes at us in rapid succession, but it never feels the need to qualify its outlandish concepts with sarcasm or ironic presentation. It knows that we're here for all the strange pulpy stuff, from mutants to aliens to time travel to sorcery to lost civilizations, and just lets us soak it all in and enjoy it without feeling the need to wink or smirk at us. A lot of modern shows just can't resist undercutting their own genre premise with sarcastic metajokes, and that kinda makes me appreciate TMNT 2003 more in hindsight.
@BiriBiri925

An attempt to reduce everything to irony and sarcasm, constant "breaks" is the scourge of all modern multimedia content. It's just unbearable, they are so afraid that the audience will become "bored". Just look at Marvel. These damn movies can't last 5 minutes without a stupid "joke" to break the atmosphere. The same applies to the 2012 series.

And if I may, we all know this, but when we see Baxter in Episode 7, apparently his eye was ripped out of the socket the dark part of his glasses is covering. And in the end of that same episode, we see the mysterious enemies. We also get some new characters like a cluster of nanobots whose hive mind is that of a child, You really feel bad for the behemoth formed from random chunks of junk after he gets melted down. Crook: I can't believe you're gone. My one real lucky break, and I broke ya. Also in episode 7, when we see Baxter after the mouser incident, we're met with new henchmen called the Foot Tech Ninjas, whose cyber armor not only enhances their natural strength and speed, but is also equipped with cloaking technology. We're also introduced to Angel voiced by Tara Sands best known for voicing Mokuba Kaiba. Also, in Notes from the Underground part 3, one of my favorite moments is when Quarry is freaking out and Mikey has to slap "him" to snap "him" out of it. Mikey: If there are gonna be any hysterics, I'LL have them! Side note: I put him in quotations because in part 3 Quarry is later revealed to be a girl voiced by Megan Hollingshead before she left 4kids to voice Rangiku Matsumoto. And in Tales of Leo we see Baxter wearing a neckbrace, and in a floating wheelchair ala Allister Smythe. Baxter has no proof so he does what any Phoenix Wright villain would do: Forge evidence and fake his findings, all of which satisfies Shredder. Fun fact: Nickelodeon took the mutant Shredder clone idea and reworked it making each one forged from Shredder's dna with that of sealife, with the small one a shrimp, the medium one a lobster and the big one a crab as it uses its arms to crawl side by side. Each mystic commands an element. Splinter: Fire melts metal, water quenches fire, earth swallows water, wind scatters earth, and I shall quell the wind. And the fight with the Baxter suit was cool, if not for the fact that Baxter had internal power sources in his weapon arms, including the one the turtles cut off. Donatello: So what you're saying is, this arm should still be functional. Sands also lends her voice to Tyler in Lone Raph and Cub. And one of the best lines from that episode. Raph: Tell me what's going on or I'm gonna drag you back to the police station all night, and I'll get angrier every time. And what happened after, well Sinterniklass became Takumi in Fire Emblem Heroes, Regal was Raigh in the same game, Abbey became Yusei Fudo in 5d's and Grayson is now Sebastian the chair robot in... Yugioh Sevens. All and all, season 1 was a great start and it only gets better from here. And I really meant it, I do wonder if Regal managed to track down a copy of TMNT The Magic Crystal.

The 1990 Movie, 2003 and Rise Turtles are still my favorites of the entire franchise. I'd never grew up with the 80s Series because as a kid of the early 2000s I kind of found them pretty boring and underwhelming. Plus I just never liked how their eyes looked in those Classic designs... I really don't like how the 80s turtles looked. (Please Viacom stop using them - I am sick of 80s Turtles.) 2013 Turtles I'd never watched through 100% because I kind of grew out of cartoons around those times and gotten more into anime as a teen. Anyways pointless comment is pointless and Media needs to stop catering to 80s/90s kids... We need to move on to 2000s nostalgia already haha.

Media has been catering to 2000s Nostalgia throughout the 2010s Heck that's one of the reasons why shows from the 2000s gets revived like Star Wars the clone wars or Icarly or even the Justice League Animated Series with the Fatal Five Movie The 80s Turtles have been used frequently because like the video said they're the most iconic version of the TMNT. If you don't like the designs then surely you probably love the most terrible TMNT movie from 2009 where the 80s Turtles are incomptient morons! Funny you should mention it because the 2013 Turtles is a anime. So you would probably enjoy the 2013 Turtles, or don't like it because anime.

@@kasam0308 Actually throughout the 2010s the media was only interested in catering stuff up to the 90s. Retro 16bit games were making a comeback, tons of 90s revivals of Tv shows, cartoons, and movies were a popular thing for a time . Specific eras tends to start being pandered to every 20 years. 1970s were nostalgic for 50s stuff. (Best example is Grease) 1980s were nostalgic for 60s. (I remember that most tv shows of the time usually referenced the hippie stuff) 1990s was all about the 70s (Watch old 90s cartoons, whenever a adult character tried to be "hip" by referencing being funky or them doing the desco) 2000s was nothing but 80s nostalgia 80s horror movies were being remade. . 8bit video games were becoming retro... A lot of 80s cartoons were turning into live action films or rebooted And I don't need to repeat about the 2010s, I just don't feel my generation is being represented that well atm. They are iconic doesn't mean I have to like em, I just want other Turtles to be represented more. Another thing.. I'm no longer stuck on that mindset as I grew up to appreciate modern cartoons more these days... You could say I grew out of anime by my early 20s

I don't know how you always seem to hit me right in the peak of my nostalgia but keep it up. Between this, the megaman X videos, and ALL the sonic videos, i keep getting sent back to my childhood every time i watch one of your videos The 4kids TMNT is hands down my favorite incarnation of the Turtles

I'm just now getting into 2003 TMNT, back when show first debut on TV I was finishing middle school and about to go into high school when I was younger I'd watch the 87/90s cartoon on Saturday's but after that I had somewhat moved on fromr the original cartoon so 2003 cartoon was skipped, anyhow fast forward to today and I'm a 30yr adult with midlife nostalgia cravings and TMNT comics, toys, video games are my fix and while I'm at it I've decided to finally see what all the fuss was about. Honestly its so good It almost is like Batman the animated series but for TMNT fans it really is watchable for all age groups and the art style is not bad especially when compared to a lot of the newer shows.

This version of the turtles will always be the best. It just felt actually serious and I thought they were so cool whereas the older and newer versions never really felt THAT “cool”. 1984 turtles looked cool too.

Heard great things about the 2003 series, but I never knew it was THIS good! I was legit on the edge of my seat at the The Shredder Strikes (Back) parts wondering what will happen next, I really need to check out this show for myself someday

I love you J, TMNT is like one of my favorite things ever and I’m so happy you are doing this. 2003 is amazing, I love it so much. I’d pray you do 2012 as it’s my favorite cartoon ever made, but I’m perfectly fine if that’s not the case.

This show is my favourite incarnation of the Turtles. I just wish it was eaiser to get my hands on the show. I don't know if any streaming service has the show but man getting this show by DVD is one of the most confusing things I've ever seen.

Do cartoons now in days still have this very PURE intent behind them? Not about sending a message, but making you really like the characters and story?
