You are very right about knives in self defence. Some 20 years ago I have been attacked by a pack of wild dogs in Africa and I kept them at bay and made them flee charging them with a knife in hand. Since then I always carry an edge weapon with me when I go outdoor. In reality having a knife is acknowledging anything can happen in this unpredictable life

I find it amusing when people say "You'll both be cut in a knife fight". While this is often the case, youll also get cut if you have a gun. If a crazed lunatic with a knife attacks you and you shoot him, do people think the figut is magically ended? A bullet doesnt necessarily stop every fight. I saw on dash cam a cop shoot a guy like 9 times and he still attacked the cop with a knife. All 9 shots hit too.

A "combat" knife in actual combat is more a tool on a daily basis than a weapon. I always carried my "combat" knife on my right hip and my pistol cross draw, easy to pin down in close quarters and I used my knife ten times a day. If you need your secondary weapon more than a few things went terribly wrong. It is there if needed to make space and get your better options back on line. ( same with your daily carry firearm) That being said in a situation with thugs on the street or animals attacking a good knife with a willingness to use it is a major advantage, not only for it's effectiveness but a person's piece of mind. It's a good tool to protect your primary weapon when attacked to close to use it or it's malfunctioning.
@Christopher33312

First, I want to say that your commentary at the beginning of the video was spot on. No one, wants to get in a knife fight. They say no one wins a knife fight and I believe it. I also know how much people fear the thought of being cut in combat. I share that fear. I literally would rather take a bullet then a deep cut or stabbing. Anyway I just wanted to add two things, and I have to say I chuckled when you showed your Kyoto... My recommendations are twofold first will not very concealable due to length, the Glock knife. It's not fancy, it doesn't look all Tacticool, but it is an excellent $35 solution. The next that I recommend wholeheartedly, and literally suggest that if you consider the possibility of needing a blade in self-defense, the cold steel mini leatherneck double-sided dagger is $20. It's concealable with only a 4-in blade, and in my mind, the perfect carry weapon. The double edge allows swipes and swings to bite regardless of the direction. The finger guard protects your hand from sliding forward if hitting bone, and the rubber grip allows a firm solid grip even if wet. I don't ever want to use one in that way, but like you said guns can fail or run out of bullets. A blade is forever. Thank you for another excellent video.
@411Outdoors
Жыл бұрын
Thanks bro I really want that leather neck for sure! The Kyoto is about 3 1/2 but it’s just one of my low key carry knives. It’s a little slicing piercing machine. I consider it a better option that a lot of the last ditch blades on the market. Meant to ask you are referring to the mini leather neck correct? I try to carry big when my outfit or the occasion permits
@Christopher33312
Жыл бұрын
@@411Outdoors Yes, the mini leatherneck dagger. I think it's $19.99 on Amazon. If you want it on your belt you can use a tec lock and some zip ties to connect the two and then you've got a good belt attachment. Glad I could help, it's nice to be able to return the favor of all your valuable recommendations.

All you need to make a guard for your knife is to buy a large zip tie and put it around the knife where the guard is at and then you can wrap around with electric tape or Wilson tape and you have yourself a guard which will protect your fingers
@Irfan87
Жыл бұрын
Personally i think a combat/fighting knife should be 6 inches at least, good grip and a guard of sorts is a must. I personally feel a knife should be your last line of defence. Get a gun, have your knife as a backup. Knives dont jam, they dont make noise etc. What's the saying, "Guns for show, knives for a pro". Take up classes, learn all you can about it. I heard someone said generally with knife fights, you either die there on the spot, or later on at the hospital. So learn proper techniques and always avoid a fight if you can. Also, another great vid Dan, appreciate it.

Okay, got a new knife that was made by Cold Steel, specially for self defense. It is the Cold Steel Espada XL, in G10 scales. It is a folding knife, with a 7.5 inch blade. It has the Triad lock which is so strong, you will break the knife, before you break the lock. Even Lynn Thompson calls the Espada a Fighting knife. And since it does fit in my pocket, no one knows you have it. And yes it does fit in my pocket. I have a Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie, I'd love to carry that, but with its 12 inch blade. Its a tad large to try and conceal.

I believe, specifically that men fear thr blade more than say a bullet, is because we all have been cut. Whether in the kitchen, or camping. Also, we were instilled as children to not touch moms kitchen knife set, as not to get cut. We all bleed, and bleeding is scary. Guns do not strike fear of bleeding, most of us havent been shot. So we don't know. Also, it is my strong opinion (as a hospital worker) that a sharp blade penetrating at least an inch or two, and dragged across someones stomach is far worse than a bullet in the same place. A bullet of course will give more penetration, but its (for the most point) a stationary wound. A large deep cut affects multiple blood vessels, veins and sometimes arteries causing massive bleeding, which in turn will make your attacker instantly switch from attacking you to self preservation Seeing large amounts of globs of our own blood does scare us. But even people who have been shot, even a few times, have continued their attack. They may not even know they have been shot. Knives have there place. Also, you never have to worry about accidentally shooting an innocent bystander. I carry a knife every day in case of a lethal threat.

I was raised to avoid conflict if at all possible - and especially to avoid edged weapons. I was deliberately NOT taught how to fight. To be a lamb, not a sheepdog. Even so, weapons and violence have sought me out several times. - Your weapon defines your moves. This fact has allowed me to disarm armed attackers several times. So rule #1 is to chose your weapon in accordance with your anticipates scenarios. - At least five times I employed edged weapons in defense. Two “swords,” two “ knives,” and one bayonet. With the large weapon (Kukri) I used the flat of the blade to drive off attackers. Corpses are hard to explain and best avoided. The knives were quite small - between 3” and 4” cutting edge - and determined the tactics I chose. A thrust right under the ribcage to the heart, and a thrust into the neck from the side. No fancy slashing here. Instant fight stoppers. The bayonet was employed against multiple assailants. A single thrust under the ribs and the fight was over. None of the rest wanted anything to do with me after that. It’s pretty straightforward. You swat with a Smatchet, stab with a Fairbairn, and slice with a Hobbit Warrior. Plan your tactics accordingly. - Carry knives with utility uses. Your small knife needs to be truly adept at opening parcels and cutting cord. Your big blade needs to be effective for clearing brush and chopping wood. Grips need to be comfortable in all conditions and automatically position the blade correctly in your hand. Design and carry method should look practical - and not threatening or deceptive.

I'll edc up to a 9" fixed blade (CS Marauder,) although my usual edc fixed blade size is 4.5" to 7". I like to carry them high using a tek-lok style clip so that they conceal under my shirt.

One you should really have mentioned is the Khukuri knife. The fighting knife of the Gurkha's from Nepal. Now I know what your going to say. They are too big and heavy. But, now you can have them made with any where from a 4 inch blade to a 15 inch blade. I have three Khukuri''s myself, and I love all of them. My newest one only has a 6 inch blade, and I am working on a sheath for horizontal carry. The Khukuri, and that is how it is spelled in Nepal, has shock and awe value, and yes, you can stab with it. You can even get them with a half guard. If your interested, look up Khukuri House Thamel Pvt Ltd. And you will be amazed at the different ones they make. Not that I live in a dangerous place, but you never know.

Good video. I abandoned the gun world just a couple months ago. Actually sold bunch of my guns (financial issues lol 😅) the rest i leave for home defense. I dont carry a gun anymore, i cary a knife, by choice. Main reason is i do NOT ever want to be in the position that i have to shoot my attacker and accidentally hit an innocent kid in th background by mistake. Id live with that forever and ve charged and imprisoned. A gun isnt the answer to everything. I think most of us are concerned with active shooterd. And thats a valid concern. I used to say "Id run toward the gunfire!!!" ...wow. Bad idea. If i run toward that gunfight, the least of my worries is being undergunned my micro compact 9mm vs his ar15, main concern is gettig shot by the resoonding officers. Just my thoughts 😊

When you run out of ammo you have to depend on the knife (and baton, tactical pen, shock baton, taser, pepper spray, and anything else I can not think of right now) . Strategy before hand during training routine is important. ( My imagination goes straight to Resident Evil and Silent Hill) also hand to hand combat is very important. Your hand feet elbows knees head but and whole body is also weapons. Plus be aware that every day items can be weapons. A roll of quarters, batteries or rocks in socks. Bottles, chairs tightly rolled up magazines and well you get the idea. Use your imagination. Theirs weapons available around us we may not realize. Land scape can be used sort of as weapons like the soldier's bottle neck strategy if more than one enemy so you can fight them off one at a time and they may not be able to all attack you all at once.🙂

For me what makes a good combat is: 1) utility - "combat" for is survival and includes times in and out of battle. 2) safety of blade usage - I have had blades close on my hand, slip from powerful thrusts, etc ... By the grace of God I'm safe with no permanent injuries but those moments live in my memory. I need a good guard (or a deep enough finger groove supported by jimping) plus a good enough steel to handle the tasks. 3) ease of maintenance - I do like the American chisel style tanto but I rather sharpen the traditional curved Japanese style tanto 4) good length of blade - something easy enough to carry which is not uncomfortable. As for your comment that you said in the first minute, Yes I much rather get shot and than stabbed. And I much rather have to shoot than stab for reasons you mentioned. If you train in martial arts or have fought then you understand. Of course, peace is always best. As always, I appreciate your insight.
