Alec, I am so impressed that someone who has accumulated as much knowledge as you have would take the time to leave a legacy for us newer divers to follow. I have watched all the episodes from your previous seasons, and learned so much. Please continue these videos as long as you have material!

From day 1, I skipped the regulator 'service' racket. I bought regs I could get service kits for online and I learned how to service me and my wife's regs. It's not very hard. 4 years and a hundred dives later, zero problems and perfectly functioning regs.

You need more subs :) Thanks for creating all that transparency about what a well organised store should look like and what a professional would need to do a proper service. Great video!

Great video Alec, if you ever run out of ideas consider making a playlist where you have a video on each component of scuba diving gear and give new divers an idea of things they should look for when buying each item like particular features, etc. Keep it up!

Can you go into more detail sometime about the inner working of the first stage? You've opened up the second stage on show before. Not looking for how to service my own, just curious what all is in there and how it works.

Kevin and I are planning a short series within Tech Tips for that very purpose. I have helped many divers understand the simple but apparently mystifying operation of a scuba regulator. I'm looking forward to doing it. Thanks for watching. Alec

Alex, you have a very rare service center. I've given up on dive stores, I now take my kit to a guy in a town up the road who specialises in checking and servicing tanks, regs and BCD. It's a bit of a drive but it's worth it. I've had guys take my regs, put them on the floor no tags, no bag, no box, oh my god.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

Yep! I see it all the time. I figure it's reflective of their business practices and that explains why so many dive stores are not successful. It doesn't take much effort to have a really good store.

You should do a video on the types of customers you get in a scuba shop.

I'm not sure if You Tube would allow that kind of video!! Actually 90% of our customers are great people just trying to enjoy diving. They fit in here really well. The other 10%, well, let's just say it's good that it's only 10% or I would not have lasted 47 years. Thanks for watching. Alec

I really worry about service organizations where the technician has many hats to wear in the store. I know that breaking concentration and then getting back to a task leads to problems. Your video really steered me to look at the service facility with a eye toward professional work area and approach.

Many dive stores have very limited staff so have little choice in this matter. I suggest that they could schedule service before or after store hours or get someone else in to help who's only role is service. Typically it requires about an hour to fully service a scuba reg system. If service is your only duty and you are organized and set up without distraction, that can be reduced to 45 minutes or less. With other duties affecting you, phone calls, sales, etc, it can easily take 2 hours or more (and maybe not be so good a job!). It makes more sense to pay someone for 45 minutes of work than have the same job last 2 hours. And it makes sense that a serviceman who does nothing but service will do a better job too. That should attract more service business. Thanks for your comment Jim. Alec

Nice video Alec. Btw, can you service the Nemrod, 3 stage, Snark III, double house regulators, like you showed in you vintage videos, with the beautiful cast like lettering in the back? Probably needs new hoses, mouthpiece, also. Thanks
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
8 жыл бұрын
Hoses and mouthpiece as well as non-return valves are easy to get. They won't be original Nemrod but will look OK and work fine. Internal parts are harder. If the diaphragm or HP seat is bad it won't be possible to fix. I'm afraid that old Nemrod regs are wallhangers.

I live just down the street, but unfortunately he does not service my brand of regulator (as far as I know, certainly doesn't sell it last I checked), so I bring it to where I bought it in Oshawa instead. Both very nice stores. But certainly I would go there if it was an option. :)

We already gets lots of divers who travel a long ways to bring us their gear. KW isn't that far. We have gear coming fro Timmins, Sudbury, Peterborough, Dundas, Grimsby, Sarnia and lots more. It's very complimentary but I don't understand why local dive shops don't do a better job. It doesn't cost anything to have a good service department. Thanks for watching. Alec

We service almost every brand Len. We have several dealers with whom we share services so if you have an odd or lesser known model (Zeagle, Atomic, Apeks, etc) we take it to an authorized dealer to service it. Scuba 2000 checks all the accessories (LP hose for BC, SPGs, computers, etc) and then reassembles and does a final check on everything once the regulator is back. We are the only store that regularly does a water test on regulators. Having our own in-store pool helps. We even take a regulator for an actual dive if warranted. So I think we can probably take care of your service needs and then you get the full Scuba 2000 treatment too. Talk again soon. Alec

it is totaly right to have a well organized shop process, it is also very important to have a person that works with thoroughness, I've saw so many equipements ruined by a careless intervention done by " qualified " technicians. pneumatic regulators are among the simplest equipment to work on but....the interventions needs a high level of cleaniness and a bit of common sense.

Right on Jacques. Regulators are very simple devices but they are precision items. Tolerances, materials, assembly, lubrication - it all has to be perfect or this simple device will fail. Alec

The Vintage Group had a Vintage Dive and Swap Meet annually for several years at Portage Quarry near Bowling Green, Ohio. It was a lot of fun and we had many diving legends visit over the years. Unfortunately Portage Quarry is closed. We've been working on getting a similar event going at another local quarry but nothing yet. Go to the vintagedoublehose website to keep an eye on developments. Thanks for watching - so closely. Alec

Thanks Alec for another great tech tip. Wondering whether it is better to have my reg serviced AFTER my current dive trip or BEFORE my next one? Intuition tells me it's better to service after the reg's been subject to the elements. I'll soak it in fresh water once i get home to prevent any deterioration from salt, etc.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
6 жыл бұрын
It's a tough sell but you are quite right. Divers always want to wait until they are going diving before they service their gear but it's best to do it after the dive. That way it's completely cleaned from the diving and in perfect condition. There's no water or salt or cause corrosion while it's in storage. Get it back from service, seal it in a Zip-Loc bag and it's ready to go any time. If it's more than 2 years, I do suggest a quick check in a pool but even that's not essential if you've done the above. Good luck. Alec

Alec, after looking over your channel, with the exception of playlists of various seasons etc your home page shows "this channel doesn't have any content" Just thought it's something you may want to know because your videos are fantastic yet the exposure seems limited, maybe get Kevin's to add more tags to boost a potential audience. Kevin Smith Hi Kevin, it's my pleasure. Now I'm no expert but if you'd like to pm me in my about page or even reveal my email address I have some thoughts for you that may help. Without being admin it's hard to know but we can discuss offline. Love the content you both present and hope for much more too. In fact I'm looking to even do the odd video myself of scuba rather than the random mix of what I've currently cobbled together. Look forward to the PM, all the best to you both. Peter.
