(This may be a dumb idea but meh i think it sounds like it has some potential) what about a sort of bayonet class, where the "stance" is holding it up to your chest like your aiming the rifle, and then you have one quick jab at the enemy. It could also have a side bullet feature that serves to diminish a small portion of the enemies sword once per round, as a way to force them into a parry before your attack?

This is a SOLID step in the right direction for VR. A lot of the common drawbacks mentioned at the beginning of the video with other VR titles is why I've basically put my headset back in it's case and stored it in the closet. We need more games that do something like this and we need the tech to keep up with it too. We also need some higher quality, lightweight VR gear.

as a fighting game player, I was a little skeptical at first but my eyes just got wider the longer the video went on. Your description of how the progression is based off personal skill rather than unlockables or loot, as well as growth in understanding of how to efficiently use tools and recognize matchups and develop varied strategies is EXACTLY what traditional fighting games are all about, and to hear and see all of this be able to be captured in a VR experience is amazing. Between this and RUMBLE VR (Which I also recommend you give a try, as its physical, form-based control is similarly interesting) I really hope I get the chance to pick up a VR headset soon.

This framework is very interesting. I don't think you need to give up physics based weapons though, seems like this would help reinforce weighted weapons. Forcing the player to conform the speed of their motions to the specific requirements of a technique or spell definitely seems like a fruitful way forward. Still waiting for a large open world that has finely tuned sword play, wand work and interactive spellcraft / interactive crafting in general.

Forcing people to take stances is cool. But a lot of these is not making them take the style of the fighter. Like the Samurai you said has to perform Kata (I think that’s the term I’ve primarily Studied in HEMA, not Japanese swordsmanship) while just standing there? That’s obviously not something you’d expect a actual warrior to do. And once they are actually fighting it’s all bets off. I do think it’d be cool if there was some system to reward actually learning the swordsmanship. And having stance positions be used is a good idea. But they will be similar across most swords and cultures. Not 100% all the same but a lot of stances that are nearly the same show up across a lot of different areas. It would also be relevant how long it stayed awakened. Depending on how aggressive the fight is stances become much less places you hang out in, and more like positions you momentarily end up in at the end of a swing or following the retracting of a thrust, before you then launch the next use of your weapon. So it would need to stay active for a while.

Havent played Broken Edge (yet) but the way described skill based progression is exactly the thing I love about Rumble as well (there's a limited amount of moves currently but I still learn something new every time I open the game). It is PC vr only right now, unfortunately. Anyway, nice video. Gonna subscribe, look forward to watching more from you

We (BE devs) have a lot of respect for Ironlights. PvP Melee combat is one of the great challenges of VR, I think both games are pioneers of the genre (recognizing that Ironlights came first). I get triggered that many comments are dismissing us as a copy of Ironlights. We do everything differently: movement, blade clashes, offense, defense, health, everything is radically different! They have ranged attacks, we have Blade Arts and secondary blades. We also have different strategies to mitigate latency. And for the record, all of BE's main design orientation were set in stone when Ironlights released. It gets to me because it implies we disrespect Ironlights. Of course we can't ask for all comments to informed, weighted feedback (I can guess those persons didn't play the game or listen to this video). I think both games propose great takes on PvP VR Melee combat, and that both game focus on different aspects. We both are pushing the genre forward.

I would have loved to hear more about the sword breaking mechanics we're seeing here. I did Olympic fencing in high school and there's a lot of rules about perries in that, both right-of-way rules about who started moving forward first, and rules about the 'strong' part of the blade vs the 'weak' part (strong=closest to the hilt, weak = closest to the top) and how that dictates who got the perry and therefor the point when both participants hit each other at the same time. It looks like there's something to do with that in the sword breaking mechanic here and I love that idea.
