DAO was also the first rpg I ever played. I remember my first character was a rouge but because I'd never played an rpg before and I was young, I had no idea that you weren't supposed to give a rouge heavy armor and a sword and shield. I also remember my character looking terrifying. Not the cool terrifying or the ugly terrifying either. The "I'm going to become your sleep paralysis demon and murder you" terrifying. Which honestly fit for the decisions that character made. Ah to be young and not understand what the hell was going on half the time. Sadly the playthrough ended when I entered the fade. That and many of the decisions felt morally grey as opposed to black and white (red and blue considering its bioware.) The excuse bioware gives for deviating away from the dark fantasy roots is because of some of the "problematic" elements of the first game. Like desire demon titties and overuse of sex, now personally for me i have no problem with the above but i think it's like bioware compensated so hard in the other direction that they lost what made the first game great. Dragon age origins was like a smaller scale version of game of thrones, inquisition is like men in tights. Completely different atmosphere.

@@KikomochiMendoza Too long; won't read If you're going to complain about DA installments post Origins, at least try to not make up something? The iconic demons such Rage, Pride never got changed. Some demons actually got designs to make them stand out instead of all just sharing the model used for Shades. The darkspawn got a redesign in 2 but demons stayed the same. Rage and Pride demons as well as Shades stayed the same. We never got a good look at a Sloth demon who wasn't possessing something or appearing as something else until Heroes of Dragon Age(doesn't appear in Inquisition). The Hunger demon only appeared during one very minor quest in Origins and one during 2 and used the standard Shade model until HoDA. Inquisition even ADDED new demons that fit the description of "terrifying otherworldly creatures...". See the Envy, Despair, Terror, and Fear demons. Less impressive they also included Gibbering Horrors, Fearlings, Wisp Wraiths, and Wraiths. In Inquisition, we do meet a Desire demon but they're possessing a human. In 2 they're the same as in Origins. In HoDA they still look the same but they are presenting less skin.

Voice acting for NPCs and Companions with actual personality, the ability to make decisions that matter to the wider world, surprisingly open romances, and combat that didn't require a damn textbook (looking at you Baldurs Gate 1; why yes, learning that you want a negative armor level was VERY intuitive, thank you,) but still rewarded some actual thought... Sure, Mass Effect was similar, but it wasn't until Mass Effect 2 that the characters and combat started feeling like they had personality, which Dragon Age had from the start. And as for Fallout 3, well...the best thing there was that it laid the groundwork for Fallout New Vegas. It's also really amazing how even the smallest things, like King Bhelen looking for his brother in Inquisition, or Loghain reappearing as a Warden, helps keep the world of Dragon Age 1 feeling alive, despite having no real effect on the overall story.

He's a person with solid conviction and definitely grew up on a place and culture very different to the place the game is set, and despite all that he's willing to learn but not to the point that he's willing to throw his original beliefs and perspective away. @@PippoFrancoPippoboth DA:2 and DA:I really miss the mark with the whole Darkspawn stuff. I know the Fifth Blight was like 10 years ago at the time of DA:I and they’re suppose to be more passive by nature cause that’s how it works, but everything about them just does not live up to their debut. Their designs look goofy. They’re not unnerving anymore, they’re kinda comical. Corypheus is a welcome addition to the story of the Darkspawn, but he’s not really threatening at least not in DA:I. Once he makes his appearance in DA:I after Haven he looses all that mystique and terror similarly to the Darkspawn themselves. I really hope that Dreadwolf leans back into the Darkspawn hard because they made this franchise for me. From that little snippet of leaked gameplay it seems like the Darkspawn will be back more prominently I just hope they’re not brushed aside by some dumb elf plot. Not that I have a problem with more elf lore, cause I’m sucker for any kind of lore, but the Darkspawn have always been *the* bad guys for me. True evil. It was the games way of saying “This is what you have to look forward to if you fail.” Which is why I think the build up to Corypheus’s build up and reveal in DA:I is really well done. Well, if you decide to help out the Mages anyway. The Templars are really kinda meh. But anyway, the whole glimpse into the future at Redcliffe by actually living it for a little bit is such a good way to establish what’s at stake. Your companions die, the world is literally falling to pieces. Nothing is good, and it only took a year. Then after that he reveals himself and wrecks everything, it’s just really cool. And then… they do literally nothing with him for the rest of the game. One of the original Darkspawn and they do nothing with it. So yeah, missed the mark. Very disappointing. @backgroundnpc9631

I don't think I agree that DA2 felt less personal. The companions in 2 felt like they interacted with each other more than the other titles. The plot taking place over several years allowed them to build a history together, seen in little things like referring to old poker nights and various capers and escapades from in-between Acts, and how you could visit a companion and they'd be just finishing up a chat with another companion who would greet you on the way out. They had lives that intersected with each other outside of their on-screen time with the player. DA2 drew flak for never wandering far from Kirkwall, but by the same token you grew as familiar with the place as its residents. Like them, you knew the best shortcuts and the alleys where you were likely to get ambushed. It felt very lived-in, and you watched it change over the years. (By comparison, you never lingered anywhere in DAO, and Skyhold was more of a base than a home to sink roots into.) Hawke was not as customizable as the Warden or Inquisitor, and so he wasn't able to be as much of a self-insert as them, but because his story and circumstances were largely fixed they were able to be woven throughout the narrative. Every major plot event directly affected Hawke and his family, and his reactions and responses were central to the storytelling. I still remember Aveline comforting my 'sad clown' as he desperately tried to laugh off how he was coping in the wake of his mother's murder. Again by comparison, the Warden is guaranteed to have no personal stake in all but one of the locations and plot arcs in DAO, and the Inquisitor never even gets to go home or see any of their family in person. I remember the way I described it to someone once: The Inquisition felt like the Avengers, a group of mighty heroes who could be friends in their off-hours but largely felt like professional colleagues in the fight to save the world. The Warden's party felt like the Fellowship of the Ring, comrades who grew to trust and rely on each other over the course of an epic journey to outrun and defeat an ancient evil. Hawke's associates felt like a group of friends (or at least friends-of-a-friend) just trying to sort out their messes and baggage and make their way in the world together. As a consequence, while I found things to love about all three titles, DA2 has always held my trophy for favorite batch of loveable idio--er, companions.

I really think it comes down to how much more control you have over the sort of character you roleplay, as compared to DA 2 and Inquisition (which were not bad by any means, mind.) As you said, Origins was good at making things feel personal. The story itself is simpler, but the details of it were much more reactive to player choice than what we got in the sequels, both of which felt a bit like they were trying to implement the Mass Effect style 'charismatic hero on a linear quest.'

I just finished my very first playthrough earlier this week, and I really enjoyed it lot, I've moved onto the second one, which I enjoy and like, it just feels like it's missing something the first had, I'm still gonna play through it through.

I wanted to like it so bad, but the fact is that no matter what kind of character I do, I always get bodied by the bears just past the grey warden thing in the beginning, and having that across MULTIPLE characters really killed it for me.

For me what made me live dragon age origins was the amount of choices I could make, combat was fun for me, but the dungeons dragged on too long for me personally, but I still enjoyed playing it, and a word from the wise, if you find yourself not looting anymore, you need to take a break. Same for when you get bored, it's a long game, so you'll need a lot of time

As someone who's more a pure crpg player (Baldur's Gate 1,2,3 , Divinity Original Sin, Fallout 2 etc.), I tried Dragon Age with the wrong one (Inquisition and I really hate it tbh). I'm more and more interested by Origins because it seems it's the only one to be a crpg. I think I'll appreciate it.

The origin stories were epic. I don't know why we don't see that in more games. Well I know why, because it is time consuming, but the reward for the time taken is insane.

Dragon Age: Origins is in my top 10 games of all-time! I love the story, the quests, companions (particularly Morrigan and Alistair), and one of the standouts for me, is that DA:O has one of the best versions of a playable mage class (the spell combinations and variations are superlative). I have been BEGGING for a remaster for years now. As much as I absolutely love this game, it's roughly 15 years old, and has some gameplay elements that may be too dated for younger players, or people who never got around to playing it before, and are used to modern conveniences and graphics. At any rate, though, DA:Origins is there for me with Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Icewind Dale - and that's great company to be in 😌.

BG1 was great. Go anywhere on a map providing an item wasn't in the way. Hill, tree. And once some LOOT. BG2 was the start of: (( by the nose pulled through a hose.)) Very little exploration. Quite often one trail to follow or two. Occasionally three. All designed to set you up :-). I got to Throne of Bhaal, then moved on. Didn't know they had put anymore out until the last week or two. written on the 21/08/2023. I'm just looking for my next game to play. And looking to see if Dragon Age interests me. Also, where if I do, do I start it.

BG1 is the worst one in the series to me (although I haven't gotten to Throne of Bhaal yet). It's good, don't get me wrong, but the party interaction is just... not there. Exploring the world is well and good, but it's not really fun if you're going around all alone, which is what you do, since the party members are just there to be battle droids, essentially. When I play Baldur's Gate 1 I often feel life "Ugh, let me just finish this game so I can get to BG2 (and to a lesser extent SoD. Yes I said it.) where the real fun starts!" Both our opinions are equally valid, of course, I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Honestly the Dragon Age series as a whole is one I love to come back and play time and time again. Each of the games does something better than the other. For me Origins is usually the one I revisit the least because of it’s clunky combat system. In 2 and Inquisition combat feels so much smoother and more responsive and doing cross class combos feels explosive to emphasize the amazing teamwork your group can preform.

I feel exactly the opposite, DA2 is kind of terrible, with bad combat system, and braided reinforcements, so tactics are dead, etc. While DAI is much much better, there are many problems with it as well, DAO is a masterpiece with its in-depth combat system, a great variety of builds, massive tactics system, which can let u set up ur allies perfectly, and it has absolutely amazing story. The two biggest mistakes Bioware did with DA is removing Hero of Ferelden as the main character and removing the amazing combat of the first game.

Yeah they kind of wrote themselves into a wall because having the kid is optional, so they'll never make him essential to the plot
@kalelson8861

@@shamrock141 95% of everything in origins was "optional" so let's be honest and admit that if they had done a proper sequel it would have been about the kid since it was such an obvious plot point for a sequel. Either that or gone back to when the first blight & first grey wardens appeared. Either of those basic concepts are much more interesting that what we actually got in da2 & 3 combined. They had literal golden writers in origins, then they either hired actual morons to write for 2 & 3 or didn't pay the original writers enough
@shamrock141

@@kalelson8861 I agree with you, I think they could have done much, much more to service a worthy sequel. I think the problem stemmed from the fact that Origins took so long and was so heavily rewritten that they really refined every aspect of it, but also didn't expect to make a sequel so they gave origins a fantastic ending just in case they couldn't go back to it, then DA2 was green lit but literally had 18 months to get sorted. They've had mostly the same writers throughout the series, but I really think they should have either continued the warden's story (the grey warden's effects on politics, harbouring mages, the calling, dwarven reconquests in the deep roads) or moved completely over to Tevinter, Orlais or the Anderfals with a new story and protagonist so that our choices remained firm at the end of origins. What we got was a half hearted attempt at both, and more than a few character assassinations that I'm not fond of

@@shamrock141 on one hand I can understand the time constraint and how severely it can effect the game as a whole and on the other we have kotor 2 that had a measly 14-16 months and had to scrap everything and start over halfway thru but still came out with what id arguably the best written storyline to date for sci Fi/ fantasy
@shamrock141

@@kalelson8861 yeah Obsidian was something else back then, Kotor 2 and New Vegas were amazing, but I think it's fair to say that's the exception rather than the rule. I'll never forgive EA for ramming series like dragon age and mass effect with tight deadlines that no doubt affected quality and ultimately I think not giving them enough time is what led to the worse writing. Regardless sometimes I think of what happened in Origins as a one off story because it had such a satisfying conclusion that hasn't been seen since

I agree even though I also think inquisition had some impactful choices to me one the best things about origins is the world building and how they handle easing you into this world, giving you some info so you know whats going on generally but also letting you explore and find new and interesting ways to learn more every playthrough about the DA universe.

When i was a kid i got DA:O. I dont remember how i got it or where from, but i had just got my first console of my own (a 360..i was late to gaming). My first games were AC2, RDR, and DA:O. Holy fuck did i play the absolute shit out of DA:O. It took me MONTHS to figure out the mage tower as a 12-15 year old emo kid. I loved the shit out of that game to the point that, when i lost my original Xbox account, i repurchased the game and all its DLCs on my new account. 100% worth it. Morrigan was my wife with Lelianna as a close second. I fell in love with Shale and Alistor was my bro. And god i laughed endlessly at "Asschabs" But dear lord Bioware put the dark in "Dark Fantasy" with DA:O. Broodmother anyone? To this day i sit down for a full playthrough every few months. I can finish this game in less than a day if i just sit down and hard focus the main story but i enjoy getting lost in the side quests too.

Having full access to all our spells/skills, the way the game changed or reacted to different origins, the companions are great, and especially the banter between the characters through out your travels. I remember watching my sister play and she was a mage so she p arty make up was different from mine and it was like a new game with all the new dialogue i'd never heard before. I didn't know it was a "crpg" I played on PS3 :D I cared about all these characters and what happened to them. Future iterations of dragon age are fine but i miss having access to my skills, and the challenge that Origins provided with combat. We should all know by now DAII was never supposed to exist, it was a quick, auto play game with a very linear setting because it was done quickly to get another title out. We can thank corporate game world for that.

Definitely the best Dragon Age game by a long way, and a contender for Bioware's best game. Definitely top three at least. (personally Mass Effect 2 has a soft spot in my heart but I admit I'm probably biased). The more recent games have all been disappointing in characters, writing and choices. I miss the days where I could betray everyone on a whim in Origins, and actually argue with them.
