I don't know much about music theory, so I'll just say that something I really appreciate musically and thematically about Halo CE is how it had a heavy mix of both orchestral and electronic, synth, bassy tracks, which almost felt like it mirrored the dichotomy of the naturalistic outdoor spaces and the mysterious forerunner ruins the game had. I know Halo 4 is contentious, but I think this is something H4 did even better, where the electronic tracks even sounded glitchy and dissonant as if to represent the forerunners were an active enemy now. Also, for as incredible as the main Halo theme is, I think it's a shame that stuff like Deference for Darkness (which IMO is THE best track in not just Halo but in gaming), In Amber Clad, Under the Cover of Night, Overture, Heavy Price Paid, Walk in the Woods, etc don't get as much attention despite easily being as good. I think Halo more then perhaps any other game series is paradoxically underrated due to how popular it is: People know the main theme and know it's a famous series, but the rest of it's soundtrack and just the games as a whole sort of get dismissed just as "that one dudeshooter that was huge before CoD" with very little retrospective analysis or coverage by gaming channels on youtube or on fourms by people other then dedicated Halo fans or hyper mainstream outlets like IGN. And I think thhat's a shame. Would love to see you cover some of those other tracks I mention among many others! Also, very, very tangentially, but as somebody who also does Mesoamerican (Aztec, Maya, etc) history collaborations and writeups, rafaelmenai on twiter did a pretty recent thread about Mesoamerican music you might find interesting. Sadly it's a subset of Mesoamerican society I know very little about myself, I pretty much only know that one thread and a few other researchers doing work on the topic, but If you find that one thread from Rafael interesting and want more let me know and I can dig up the few other things I know I have somewhere!

I think that a very overlooked soundtrack is the one from the original SCP:containment breach while there isn't really many tracks the few that are there are incredibly effective at invoking a sense of udder dread, hopelessness and isolation

Apple did NOT control Bungie. They were and are a totally separate company - they just primarily released their games for the Mac (Pathways Into Darkness, and two of the three Marathon titles - Marathon II and Myth were released on Windows as well). Like many companies that had really good Mac implementations (or were Mac-only) they were featured on-stage at Macworld and WWDC.

It's not that deep. Its suppose to be a sauber mellancolic and serious note to denote the underlying gravity of the main plot. Then the rock music starts which is the start of the military music you could imagine soldiers listen to to prepare for battle. This is also put in the perspective of a hero journey and 117 is the hero kind of. This typ of first serious then action is used by literally every composer out there. The idea that it's iconic is due to the fact that it's good, but mainly to be honest it's because of the franchise success overall.
