Interesting take on how we make voting decisions! I think the idea that people listen best to those who are most like them, is pretty accurate and well studied in the field of social marketing. I appreciate your take on trying to influence folks. But… The comments section was actually the most enlightening. People seem keen on pointing out that America is a constitutional republic. That, people, is true. However the basis is that one person has one vote. The idea that everyone has a voice. Unlike dictatorships where one person or a few make decisions for everyone, with no recourse. Think Russia. She was using democracy as a “value”. And I am pretty sure she knows we have a Democratic Republic. As far as those comments, that “you are never gonna listen to a Ted Talk again cuz it’s political”.., Ted talks exist on every topic you can conjure up. Yep. Even politics.

Excellent presentation from the "typical" :)) lesbian Republican, Sarah Longwell. I never wanted to belong to any tribe. I learned early on about the hazards of groupthink. Learned this again on social media. Prior to the attack on Gaza, I hung with the Dems, though it was an uncomfortable fit. After the attack, I began hanging with those outside the Dem echo chamber and began to see much more clearly the Dems' hypocrisy when it came to matters of race and social justice and just plain self-reflection. Democracy would be nice, if we actually had one. But, what semblance of it that we do have is worth keeping, for without it we're lost and, as Sarah intimated, the rest of the West will soon fall to fascism. I'd also love to know who the "trusted messengers" actually are. The MSM has certainly proven it's not. There are the Progressives, but they've been pretty much silenced and undercut every election by the corporate Dems. One thing is for sure --we need to work harder than ever to defeat the authoritarian forces in this country. They are not going away. Democracy is not free, nor is it a spectator sport. We need to be engaged at the local and state level in every state, rebuilding our communities, and creating a national network. There are three books, which, taken together, provides the blueprint to taking back our country: George Lakoff's "Don't think of an Elephant," and David Pepper's books, "Laboratories of Autocracy: A Wake-Up Call From Behind the Lines," and "Saving Democracy: A User's Manual for Every American."

*"The Jew of Malta"* is a play written by Christopher Marlowe, believed to have been composed around 1589. The plot revolves around Barabas, a wealthy Jewish merchant living in Malta during the sixteenth century. Here's a brief summary:

"Democracy is like two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner." Benjamin Franklin The founders knew about the flaws of democracy because they were very intelligent so they formed a constitutional Republic. She didn't mention this fact at all. We aren't a democracy, we are a constitutional Republic with some democracy like aspects.

Some people don't look at what they eat. But the problem is not in democracy, but in the nation. We need to learn to be human now.

@@ИменославФамильский since this nation has never actually been a full fledged democracy and never will perhaps you would be happier in a different nation. I like my country just fine. If a citizen doesn't like the laws in one state they have 49 other states to choose to live. In other nations if a citizen doesn't like the laws there just stuck with it. Only those who dislike REAL American values feel threatened by freedom of speech and freedom of press. Those on the side of truth and reality embrace ALL the data no matter how uncomfortable it makes them feel or how much of a disadvantage it puts them in.

The United States is a representative democracy. Citizens vote for their government officials, and these officials represent the citizens' ideas and concerns in government. This means that our government is elected by citizens.

@@catherinec2967 wonder why Hillary Clinton and Walz recently gave speeches saying the government needs the power to arrest citizens for speech they deem untrue? Do they really think that kind of talk helps the democratic party? Good guys don't need to suppress speech and hide things from the people who pay their salaries. They have truth on their side which means they can easily debunk lies. People already don't trust the government and these anti free speech individuals amplify that mistrust. The Democrats of today are completely opposite of the JFK era Democrats. Look how many educated Democrats have left the party.😯

1 problem with your talk...the US isn't a democracy, its a constitutional republic. That was done by design. The founding fathers hated large scale democracy with good reason. "Democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner." Ben Franklin

This is nonsense. The USA is a republic. The problem is Democracy allows the majority to rule and the founders of this country didn't want a democracy. A Republic insures your rights know matter what the majority says. In a Republic there is no majority or minority. Don't allow them to change the narrative and make you think America is a democracy. And to the Republic for which it stands.

Because I despise the premise, I was anticipating it being anger clickbait and that the speech would end up being very insightful. Nope. Americans don’t need to talk about or think about democracy because it’s “the air we breathe.” Complete nonsense and garbage thinking. We have no democracy in this country. The Princeton study proved that, as if being politically aware wasn’t enough proof. Your vote for president affects nothing in an oligarchy.

Who said democracy is about voting? This is a fallacy. And as a result, the sacrifice of people, or their destinies, which is equivalent.
