Your hike at this time of year was wise as you missed the greatest challenge of hiking in Minnesota: the mosquitos! Great video, SHT (in my home state) is now on my list, for a fall thru-hike!

Thanks so much for sharing this. The SHT is a bucket list item for me ever since I did two 80 and 75 mile paddles in the Boundary Waters and saw Bigfoot and Frozen's videos. Can't imagine how stunning it must have been with all the fall color. I'm happy you got to do it!

Superior is largest by surface area and contains more water than the other great lakes combined, but Russia's Lake Baikal, holding 20 percent of the world's freshwater, is largest by volume. Superior is third by volume.

I live in Duluth, MN. which is close to the southern terminus of the trail. I think about fifty miles of the trail runs through the town. I've hiked many sections of the trail and have done a week long hike from the northern terminus south. It is quite beautiful. It nice you enjoyed the trail.

I agree with everything about this trail save for one aspect. Getting too and from the Northern Terminus(NT) is or can be a challenge and potentially expensive. There is no public transportation from Duluth to Grand Marais that we could find. One of the trail angel contacts we found wanted $250 for the trip. Understandable….it’s 110 miles or so one way just to Grand Marais from Duluth. It’s another 35 miles to the NT. We managed to find a trail angel on FB who gave us a ride all the way to the NT (gave him a hefty “donation” because it was a great ride and conversation along the way). We started after Labor Day 2022 and hiked to Grand Marais and needed to get off for an emergent health reason BUT we met some great people there. A guy who saw us walking down the hill and gave us ride to the campground and then a tour of the city and to dinner!! The next day we met a couple who gave us a ride all the way back to Duluth. This trail is definitely worth the iffy logistics though. Absolutely beautiful! We will return in the next couple of years to complete it! Thanks for the beautiful video!

I just did a quick look and it appears there may be a bus now which travels between duluth and grand marais, though I don't know if that's current. If it isn't then definitely trouble! I'd be interested in hearing someones experience who had tried hitch hiking there or back. In theory it's just one direct and long road, and I've hitch hiked further than that before too! Still not an option most would want to go about, I'm just curious. A lot of trails which aren't a loop and something along these lines is a reality unfortunately. The 250 is a lot but it's not unheard of. When I did the Sheltowee Trace I paid the same to get back to my car after finishing(by a company who i knew the owner!). On the Great Divide it's 250-450$ to get a ride back from the end. On the long trail I paid about 200 to get to the northern terminus. It would be amazing if there was a bus of some sort that went that way. Otherwise trail angels are.... angels! And hopefully can help some along the way.

@@JupiterHikes Thanks Jupiter! I was told then that they used to have a bus that ran up and down between the two but it was suspended during Covid and never restarted …. Maybe it has now.👍. Once at Grand Marais I think it might be fairly easy to find a ride to the NT. The city buses in Duluth are great if you need to get around that town. (Also I thought you might appreciate that my wife is starting the FT in about a week. Hot Diggity!)

The SHT is perfect for it! So many sections along this trail are really incredible, the only area I would say is not as good as the others is south of Two Harbors - north of Duluth. Other than that small bit it's all great
