Just saw Billy Joel in concert last weekend. At 72 he’s still got it. Amazing sold out show at MSG. Billy’s first love is classical music. He started playing piano at 4. His parents were both musical and he got a lot of exposure to many styles and loves it all. His favorite singer is Ray Charles, who he got to do a duet with. Fav band is probably the Beatles. Check out Nylon Curtain album which is his homage to the Beatles or An Innocent Man album in which he honors the music of his youth. The man is an eclectic musical genius. And re. the dark side of genius, I think he’s found his balance. Plays a couple of shows a month, takes his wife and young kids with him. He’s finally enjoying the fruits of his labor.

One of the greatest American performers of all time! I've seen Billy Joel in concert several times and NEVER disappoints! Billy Joel is a blue collar performer and is very down to earth on stage. It's like he is sitting at a piano on your living room. My wife and I saw him at Busch Stadium in St. Louis last year when he was doing to the stadium tours and he was just as good then as he was in 1995 when I saw him for the first time. I was part of a choir that won a couple of competitions singing soft rock hits of the day. Our high school marching band played the popular rock/pop songs of the day. It was awesome!

A lot of the pressure he dealt with had to do with his frustration with fame. Billy has a prodigal talent, blessed with perfect pitch and the ability to play by ear from a very early age. Music has always been his safe space. He’s lived through a LOT of stuff with mental health (he attempted s*uicide twice in his early 20s), family issues, and relationship issues, and had people try to take advantage of him, because he’s a nice guy. He is in a really good place now, personally and professionally. He is close with his oldest daughter Alexa Ray, also a gifted musician, and good friends with Christie (they were very committed to coparenting even after they split). Billy has been with his wife Alexis for almost 15 years (they’d been together for several years and got married in 2015), and they have two young daughters. He and his wife have a rock-solid marriage, and complement each other really well. He also gives back a lot to his community, and helps a lot of musicians (especially students) through masterclasses and quietly donating time and rescources to school music programs. He’s lived through a lot, and it’s great to see him enjoying life and all the rewards for his hard work. He really deserves it. ❤

The crazy thing was he wasnt belting out, my ear was right next him and even above the crowd noise I was amazed that his attack was no louder than his speaking voice, no veins popping out his neck, no huge diaphragm gulps, just total control of his voice.

Whichever technique he uses you can feel that he sings as himself. He tells that story through his words, the accompanying piano he's playing and all the other aspects that creates that specific form of expression we call a 'song'. He's authentic. He talks to his lovers, ex-lovers and all the world at the same time. He says 'that's me, that's what I feel, that's what I think and that's what I believe'. And the audience knows that it's true.

Another great video 🤘 It's a known fact that during his live shows he somehow holds tickets to the best seats in the house , like the first couple of rows on the floor. He does this so scalpers don't get them. Minutes before the show starts , he has his crew go into the crowd and find a few lucky people who happen to have the worst seats, then upgrades them to the front. This happened to us years ago at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island . We were all the way up on the 3rd level and all of a sudden these guys come over and say " how many people are in your party ? We say 6, they say Billy wants you to enjoy the show from the floor. They escort us down and we find ourselves first row center , we were actually leaning on the edge of the stage. What a memorable night that was !

@@kentamplin also, if you get the time look up Billy Joel last play at Shea. Incredible performance and the last concert prior to them taking down the stadium to make room for the new one. He had a lot of special guests. One of which was Paul McCartney who flew last minute from London to New York had a police escort to the stadium to play two songs with Billy. The great thing about it was the same gentleman that drove the Beatles out to the stage in the 60s drove Paul out at this show. Keep up the great videos Perhaps consider doing one on Tom Kiefer ( Cinderella ) as he is another extremely talented musician with a very unique voice. He lost his voice through vocal cord paralysis and basically had to relearn how to sing years ago

What makes Billy Joel great? Not only his powerful voice that can turn into a powdery softness at a moment's notice, not only his intricate chord changes and piano technique/skill. His band, was TOP OF THE LINE. With guys like them behind him, it really gave Billy Joel that perfect sound. One of my favorite songs from The Stranger is Get It Right The First Time, and the drums syncopated with the rhythms of the piano and guitars are amazing by themselves. All of a sudden Billy's voice comes through like Pow! I owe my interest and ability at piano to Mr. Joel as I've learned most of piano by learning his songs.

No one paints a picture of late 20th century America better known than Billy Joel. He tells stories about people struggling as in Brenda and Eddie, Piano Man, Allentown and DowneasterAlexa. And the rich in Big Shot and Don’t ask me why. People trying to make it Moving Out, uptown Girl and also in Piano man. He tells stories of style in punk of the 80’s (still rock and roll to me) and 50’s (keeping the faith).

What makes Billy great to me comes with a bit of a story. My uncle discovered that, when I was younger, I was able to pick up a song and sound it out by ear on the piano. So one day I wanted my dad to get me a movie from the video store, (and you just had to settle with whatever they picked out for you lol). So... he came home with a Billy Joel in concert VHS. So I put it on, and, to my surprise, I recognized quite a few songs! One was "just the way you are" which was the demo song that my uncle's little keyboard played (so... basically the first song I ever learned by ear.) So I guess I was just surprised to hear that one guy was responsible for so many great recognizable songs. Plus he was a real showman :)

Thank you so much for reviewing Billy. His voice is so often overlooked, even by him. He didn’t really like his own voice, but appreciates it more now that it is deeper and richer. He hired a back up singer/ acoustic guitar player ( Mike Delguidice) because he sounded so much like a younger Billy. You can hear their duet in concerts after 2013 of Until the Night which is Billy’s homage to the Righteous Brothers. It showcases an early vs later Billy voice. Saw him perform in 2/2020. Even at 71 he’s still got it.

Billy Joel's music, much of it, has a sweet melancholy to it. In other words, it's sad or alienating, but we love to wallow in the sadness (Captain Jack, Honesty, Goodnight Saigon, Piano Man [losers with broken dreams wallowing in drink and the piano player is one of them] and many others) because it has its own special beauty. He seems to be pining away for something that is lost and we don't remember what it was but we don't care because it feels so good to revisit the sadness in a really beautiful way. In a really weird way, Billy makes us sad and that makes us happy. And another note, I call many of his tunes, bootstrap songs, and what I mean is they require a huge amount of ecstatic personality to pull them off. They manifest in their own unique rhythmic environment and it's like riding a bike, you've got to be up for it and stay the course.

I am 42 at the age of 8.5 I heard we didn't start the fire for the first time I loved it played it more than 24 hours straight and wanted more my dad took me to tower records and got me piano man by the time I was 9 I had his entire collection I could tell you ever album name year it was released the and the order of the songs there listed run times everything I have a head injury from my time in the marines that has damaged my memory but weirdly enough you can start any billy joel song at any point in the song and I can still instantly pick up what song it is and jump into the lyrics I don't know if music is stored differently or if it's from literal years of listening to his stuff on repeat that has caused this but now days the only time I feel whole and normal and like my brain works correctly is when I'm singing billy joel

Billy Joel has so many incredible songs. How many artists span decades with hits in multi decades that most everyone knows? As for what I think of him, or his songs, depends on the song. We didn't start the fire, I think of high school, as we had to do an essay breaking down what it was about. For homework, that was a fun one. 🤣

I bought his album "Glass Houses" back in 1980. He was one of my faves then. I wish I could have seen him live he has a way about him. LOL. It's like his voice comes from somewhere in the heavens at times so much heart in it. And the song compositions are cool too as you mention. I wonder if Rick Beato has a segment on one of his songs.... I will check.

Billy Joel always reminded me of Eddie Money for some reason. Used to get them mixed up all the time. I don't know why. They both became famous early in their careers, and just kept going and going and going. Billy is a great all around musician in every sense of the word. Singer, songwriter, pianist, frontman, and performer. He definitely has paid his dues in life. I can remember when selling out Madison Square Garden was a huge deal. Now, Billy's second home, sell out after sell out not matched by many. Great video Ken on a great classic artist. IT'S STILL ROCK AND ROLL TO ME!😎

Your mention of Billy struggling with the creative forces in his head is embodied in his song 'Summer, Highland Falls', particularly 'We are always what our situations hand us / It's either sadness or euphoria'.

Oh, yeah. I was one of those kids who thrived on all the arts taught in public schools in our generation, Ken (I'm just a couple years behind you!). we fortunate to have our13-year-old kid go to a private school where they instill music and visual arts still, thankfully.

Thanks for posting this and sharing your thoughts on Billy. I'm a super fan and seen him in concert 9 times, 1st in 1990. He's amazing live and what strikes me the most while at his concerts is the flawless piano playing (Miami 2017 intro comes to mind). Anyways, this clip is from the Wembley concert in '84. While we are used to seeing him sing to us while sitting playing the piano, it is limited or rather strange to see him walking around singing. However, for this vocally challenging song (The Longest Time), you will notice his body posture technique that he uses to be able to vocalize and sustain the harmonious vocals. If you go to 11:02, this is an example of what I'm talking about. You will notice how effective he is at gasping for some air before continuing with the next phrase. Besides being such a talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he has a great technique for singing live. Of course, the man is now 72 and what we see in the video was perhaps his prime. Listen to "This Night" from this same concert, another beauty Thanks and rock on! I just subscribed to your channel.

You can't forget Uptown Girl! I'm with you on art and music in schools. It was still being taught it when i was in school. I remember i played the recorder a little bit, not very well but still it was fun. We need to stop defunding music education. It is beyond sad.

The thing with performers like Billy Joel and Elton John, to name two, is that they are the whole package in terms of being talented musicians AND entertainers. Todd Rundgren comes to mind too when I describe this. Sorry if I spelled his name wrong. That Goodnight Saigon song makes me cry every time. Not sure if you covered it here as I'm only part way through the video.

Great voice and not a one trick pony... I was listening to The Nylon Curtain and caught a lot of Beatles influences. Love the Longest Time and Uptown Girl. You May Be Right...when I first heard it, I thought it was Mick Jagger.... His love songs are really honest w/ lines like: She'll promise you more than the Garden of Eden, then carelessly cut you...and laugh while you're bleadin' or Maybe, I'll be sorry when you're gone...that little bit of snarkiness or twist of the knife....
