Hi Jake, excellent vid - enjoyed whilst having a nice cup of tea! I've so much to say about this topic - bear with me: So, when I started collecting Swirl aged 18 and onwards in 1996 and beyond they could be found for around £15 to £50 each. The big hitters like Dr Z would be about £100 back then. At that time, all collectors and dealers who were a fair bit older than me, were really complaining about how pricey they were. I don't think they realised how much the values would increase. Neither did I to be honest. I was quite happy paying what I paid for them at that point. I've been questioning for years just how rare they actually are and how many were pressed and sold. Dr Z has had a rumour of just 70 made, however recent evidence suggests this is not true - it's probably at least 1000. As you mentioned from Poppa Dave's advice, many Swirl releases apparently could not be given away in the late 70s. I've heard stories of multiple copies for sale for just 50p in shops (I reckon the equivalent of a fiver now). Anyway keep hunting for these. Always bear in mind the non UK press Swirls can be much cheaper but are often as good. German, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish versions sound very nice. Keep up the good work as always - nice to see the Uriah Heep debut has been found and in the collection :-)

When friends and I got into music ('82/83), we never spoke about labels, OGs, promos and such. We bought vinyl for the music. I stopped buying vinyl mid to late 90s but just carried on with my Iron Maiden collection. These days, I'm trying to get their UK variant 1 LPs, UK 7" alternative labels and complete my Japanese vinyl, just a hobby now. I guess, there's a label/OG/promo collecting snob in all of us lol.

@@arzabael Thanks. These days, I'm just a dumbass Maiden collector lol. Living in the UK and growing up in the '80s made it easy. From '83, I bought 99% of their OGs on release day. 2 years ago I found out about the variant 7" labels, so, decided to collect as many as I can.

Love that classic label and always one of my favourites. The logo is also one of the most original too and there's no other record label that would have a unique logo like that one.

I got all the Italian pressings of Sabbath's Vertigo swirls up to Technical Ecstasy. As far as I know Italy was one of the few markets where both Sabotage and Technical Ecstasy were issued with the swirls. I also have Heep's Very eavy on Italian swirl and Warhorse 's 2 albums. By the way , the Italian pressing of Master of Reality came with a black inner sleeve, the only one to be printed like that. I may have some more Vertigo swirls around, mainly German or Dutch. They were cheap back in the day...

I have May Blitz and the sequel album, Colosseum's Valentyne Suite and Daughters of Time, Gracious, Magna Carta, Affinity, Rod Stewarts Gasoline Alley and an Old Raincoat etc. and of course all the Black Sabbath albums and Uriah Heep, Very Eavy album. They still have a very stunning aliveness to their reproduction. Superb sound quality and ground breaking content at the time. Still very valid today. I'm not particularly bothered about their monetary value, I just love them as part of my life. Still played regularly. Loved your Barry Winton Video, what an absolute geezer that man is.

I think another aspect was that in the mid to late 60s, which was the peak of the op art movement. Op art (short for optical art) often relied on optical illusions and movement to get its full perceptual experiment. Roger Dean's label design is a textbook example of the commercial application of an artistic style. It is very very good.

I did see the "Dr Z ",album once at a Record Fayre in Stoke On Trent in 1987, I knew it was sort after, but never asked the price. I've heard it a few times and don't think it's good at all. Apparently, the BBC has a copy of Three parts in their archives and the cover is held together with gaffa tape. I did have a copy of the second most expensive Vertigo album, that being the "Tudor Lodge" album. However I gave my copy to band founder John Stannard as he didn't have an original copy of his own album. I think I originally paid £75 for the Tudor Lodge album in 1985

There's more rare UK labels than swirl Vertigo's but I appreciate they command high prices and collectors want them. Records on Nepentha, Deram/Decca Nova, RCA Neon etc are less common in general. The Vertigo book suggests every release got at least 8000 pressed but that means a lot of Dr Z's, Tudor Lodges, Linda Hoyles etc got destroyed so who knows. I was paying £10 and £15 for Sabbath's in the early 00s. 666 cost me £15 and Gracious cost me £40 or £50, can't recall. Funnily enough I had no idea how many swirls I had until the other day when I added them up.... currently 45. There's many I have no interest in owning.

Vertigo Records are no where near as desirable as what they have been over the years. Values have gone down, rather than up. All you need to do is look somewhere like Popsike and see what they’ve sold for over time. These days, I’m finding Vertigo records for far lower prices than what they were selling for ten years ago.
