The kind of current Copilot features for Power BI you are referring to is out here for public preview, which is just a rename by adding the keywords Copilot. For full features announced during Microsoft Build, they are still in private preview with limited access both internally and external parties so far. DAX query editor, the 4th tab on the left side of Power BI Desktop demoed by Zoe from Power BI Product team is something new that brings the power of Copilot writing codes for you with NLP and it’ll also extract DAX queries out of any data point inside a visual. To be honest, although the Copilot is catchy and a good marketing material in terms of current AI trend, the real killing service is Microsoft Fabric, which has been developed by thousands of engineers whereas Power BI just by a few hundred.

I hate getting the wool pulled over my eyes (Apple has done the same with supposedly "NEW FEATURES" for the iPhone for years), but with all the current hype I am guessing MS doesn't want to look like they are missing the boat (even though in reality the boat hasn't actually gone anywhere... yet?).

Agreed @joedougs, nothing more than hype--just new packaging for the same old product.

Can we migrate existing power bi reports into microsoft fabric to leverage it using copilot?

Chat GPT helped me to prepare small dummy dataset which can be used in Power BI, but when I asked him to list all of States of American with its population to was generating first 10 by alphabetic order then stopped. I needed to ask several Times for correct output...

Yes, sometimes you need to ask ChatGPT several times. However, if it only gives you a partial response, you can just tell it "continue", and it should give you the rest of the response (or at least more) without having to start over.

You cant get an AI that creates a complete end to end PowerBI report just by passing the data to AI. For that the first ask for the Project Managers is to precisely describe what they want, and that is what the hard part is...
@BrandonMichals

Agreed, I don't think anyone is expecting AI to create the entire report. However, when Power BI Copilot finally rolls out, it will be interesting to see if Power BI Copilot will be able to draw on the Microsoft Graph data to create a report that's contextual to your organization.

@@BrandonMichalsYes it will be helpful if Co-piolet creates some graph and write DAX queries by using a ChatGPT like feature. This will be helpful for prototyping and adding new features to a report quickly. Whereas the most time taking task for me is to do the formatting, like to change the font sizes, color, layout etc. of all the tiles. If co-pilot helps me to format that in one go, that will be super beneficial 😁

Yes, I had the same thought--just tell Copilot what you want your visualization to look like, and it creates it. That would save a ton of time going through all of the settings and be a huge productivity win! My comments on Graph were specific to the Microsoft Graph, which is what Microsoft has developed to enable something like Copilot to provide responses that draw from all of your personal data in all of your Microsoft applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook etc.).

Without a properly constructed Semantic Layer and strong Prompt Engineering, a LLM will always hallucinate answers, or at least be inconsistent. What BI needs is a strong Semantic Layer, where all your business logic - your dimensions, metrics, aggregatio rules - are defined in one place. PowerBI does not have a Semantic Layer, and from what I hear, even Microsoft Fabric is more of a Presentation Layer than a Semantic Layer. The answer? Don't let the LLM anywhere near your data. Just use the LLM as the friction-reducer between the human user asking questions and the responses in the chat window. Leave the BI tool's query engine to do what it does best, query the data, but in response to the business question, as received and understood by the LLM. That way you get accuracy, single version of the truth and ChatGPT-like frictionless access to insights There is a BI Platform available which has already delivered this, and it's not PowerBI with Co Pilot, It's MicroStrategy One with AI.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I anticipate that to deliver accurate data insights, BI tools that leverage an LLM would need the LLM to be trained with specific domain knowledge. In the absence of that, then yes, a semantic layer is an essential component. Are you currently working with Microstrategy One? One of my clients built out a POC with a couple different BI vendors a few years ago, and MIcrostrategy was one of them. My client ended up going with Qlik, so I don't have any experience with Microstrategy, but I know they're one of the heavy-hitters in the space.

Hi Brandon ...... I agree with you on most of the use cases that you have used .... however I find Chat GPT is improving now ..all you need is to be good with prompt engineering ... AI needs human intelligence indeed ..

Thanks for you comments! I'm glad to hear you think ChatGPT is improving. I'm planning to do a comparison using the different AI chat bots to see which one handles the data analysis best--so I'll definitely experiment with a lot of different prompts.

I disagree that copilot will not have a big impact after researching it and being a power bi developer the last couple of years. The huge change is that through the consolidation of all the features you mention that already existed in their parts, now you can simply use a single Chat and interact with a chat gpt like chatbot to build your whole report in minutes. And this adds new features like shown in the demo where you can simply writte to adapt the layout of an exisiting template. So you can literally outsource all the formating. The leverage this has is something never seen before with Power BI in my opinion, assumed it really works as great as shown in the presentation

If it's true that we will be able to revise our visualizations through a chat interface, then yes, I agree, it will be a huge benefit! However, the point of the video was 1) to show that Microsoft's initial announcement of Power BI Copilot mostly just rebranded several already existing features, and 2) to ask why they would do that. For now, all we can do is wait and see what they deliver.

there is an IA hype, can you really use IA to calculate metrics for the business? that's suicidal, IA is good for generalities or to give you a best practice or fetch you a function or an idea, for complex calculations you need your brain to create and debugg what you created!

Typical incapacity to count - but that should have been fixed by now, via multi-modality, and Lang Chain, along with hallucination and the proclivity to lie - oh and a huge ego ranging to megalomania, leftist ideology, atheist / materialist world-view, ... The history of the development of most of these features and even the latest architecture, goes back more than ten years - most notably to Geoff Hinton's lab that produced Ilya that produced OpenAI. Yet for all the billions and the timeline of breakthru's - Google Search still can't properly weight search terms by user category - even though multi-expert approach to manageable neural network sizes was Ilya's Ph.D paper - or one of them. Which means Google should have a model of my interests and categorize what it shows me first. It plainly does not. Meanwhile Microsoft has evidently taken a Russian company Bitrix AI, and renamed its product, and scrubbed its history. I don't think many Americans of any age or background would favor Russian technology out of pure detestation over Ukraine and the Regime - even though the people are victims - especially the intelligentsia.

I really do love Microsoft. I've been a software dev on the Microsoft stack my whole career. But I wish they would just be straightforward. At this point, the release of Power BI Copilot still doesn't appear on any of Microsoft's public roadmaps, and I believe the reason is that there are some real issues they still need to work through before it's ready for release.
