Introversion is NOT shyness. They are different concepts. I’m not shy at all, I go out into the world and am very outgoing, bubbly, chatty, and love to see my friends. But once I’m done, I look forward to returning home and require A LOT of alone time to recharge. I’m very comfortable and happy sitting home alone and doing my independent quiet hobbies. I am introverted even if it doesn’t look that way to people who think introverts are all quiet, insecure shy people.

Being an introvert and being confident are not opposites. I was introverted and shy. People would always pressure me to be more outgoing and extraverted which made me feel like there was something wrong with me. The lesson I learned is its okay to be introverted but not okay to be shy. Shyness is a fear of others while being introverted means you're just not drawn towards the music and spotlight at a party. Introverts should push themselves to meet and talk to people but shouldn't feel ashamed to not want to be in the middle of the dance floor. In school everyone studies in groups but I study alone and that's fine with me as long as I'm scoring higher than everybody else.

Introverts especially have it rough bec the expectation is for everyone to be super outgoing and people make you feel guilty for not. Introverts shouldn't be afraid to introduce themselves and talk to people they find interesting but don't feel bad if you don't want to be in the center of a million people you don't know or care about. In short, don't push yourself to be like everyone wants you to be and also dont be afraid of others

I hate the introvert trope of someone only being an introvert due to trauma or some other distress. I hate relating to a quiet or reserved character only to have them be extroverted only after having their trauma resolved. It gives the impression that being an introvert is a trauma response and not a natural preference. 😔 Edit: Introvert, extrovert and ambivert are just how you get and recharge energy. Because introverts get recharged by being alone, we TEND to be more reserved and closed off, just like because extroverts recharge with others, they TEND to be very social and outgoing. You can be an introvert and a social buttery, and you can be an extrovert and shy.

We actually talked about this in school, according to my teacher; Introvert = charges energy by being alone and looses energy from being around people Extrovert = charges energy by being around people and looses energy from being alone Obviously this is very simplistic but I think in the end it rings true because it doesn’t mean you are shy, or don’t like people or anything like that.

In my head, I’m Benedict but when I’m out and about, I’m Francesca. I was never a very social person, rarely meeting up with friends outside of school, but the pandemic definitely affected me in terms of interacting with people my age. I recently moved back to my home country after several years but still haven’t gone out much. Some might call me lazy. I won’t go too into detail but I really feel all the changes I’ve gone through have drained me. I’d like to have a more stable life by the end of the year, though. What I really wonder about, though, is what my social life will be like. In the months leading up to my move, I fantasised about completely reinventing myself, simply letting go of inhibitions I’ve had in the past and becoming a very loud, outgoing person. It’s obviously not that easy. But anyway, it’s basically led to me wondering what I really am like. The gears in my head are always whirring with thoughts about my writing and just things in life in general but I rarely express those thoughts out loud. I really would like to form close friendships but I don’t know what “role” I would play in a friend group. I don’t want to be quiet and as a result more ignored but I don’t know if I’d really be a party animal... I know none of this makes sense, probably, I’m just hitting my random thoughts down lol

In this respect, TV has made MASSIVE progress, and we're starting to see more and more lady introverts on screen. At long last, I feel seen.

There's a huge difference between cognitive extroversion and social extroversion. Many cognitive extroverts are still social introverts. It literally means focused externally on the world, not necessarily on people. Some people are action oriented, adventurers, discoverers, adrenaline junkies, which are extroverted activities, but you can, and often prefer to do it alone, or 1:1. Also, do not conflate introversion and extroversion with shyness. There are introverts who are confident, and extroverts, who might desire social interaction, but also experience extreme anxiety all the time. Being introverted or extroverted isn't special, nor is one realistically valued over the other. In society, being able to collaborate is what advanced us from the stone age, hence, it's valued for the impact on humanity as a whole. And a lot of the things require input collected and distributed by extroverts, but processed and adapted by introverts, before being distributed and executed by extroverts respectively. I am focused externally on the world, for example. But, if we're not talking MBTI or Jung, I'd consider myself a social introvert and quite a recluse. I can guarantee you a lot of those celebrities that label themselves as introverted would begin their MBTI with an E, if analyzed by cognitive function. And about the prejudice against introverts... tell me three genuinely nice things you'd say about an extrovert, that you personally value, not what you assume is valued by others. I think most self proclaimed introverts (in fact majority of the population) can't.

But seriously human-society wouldn't have been as great today if weren't for more introverted or lonewolf people like Albert Einstein and Nikola Tesla and Abraham Lincoln. Introverts might not be as vocally demanding for respect but that doesn't change the fact the more introverted folk deserve respect and better representation too.

A message to some introverts out there: please stop using the excuse of being an introvert to justify your pity party. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being an introvert and most people don't mind you being quieter. Being an introvert doesn't justify your social ineptitude and it also doesn't justify you treating extroverts as if they have it easier. Of course, they tend to connect with people more easily, but they are much more likely to be considered annoying by others, and they also have difficulty dealing with solitary activities. Everyone has difficulties in some areas of life and ease in others. Try to bring light to your strengths instead of only criticizing someone who thrives on your weaknesses.

Poor social skills are not the same as Introversion. Extraverts have a higher capacity social battery, which allows them to practice social interaction more, which tends to make them better at it. Inteoverts can, and i think should, still learn social skills, they just may not apply them as often. The only “alone” thing she actually does is write in her diary. She galvanises an entire prison cell of woman to sing Madonna in a push up bra, for gods sake! How is that in any way introverted? Does she travel on her own? Go for walks, spend time in nature on her own? No. She goes to a garden party dressed up as a playboy bunny, wears a see-through top at work, flirts with her boss, embarrasses him in front of the whole office when she publicly quits, and appears on camera with her bum on show. Bridget is a brilliant, awkward and hilarious extroverted queen. The only reason we only see a limited number of her social circle is because the movies couldn’t keep introducing new characters. But she had a massive social net that includes “jellyfish” Rebecca.

I am still not 100% percent acceptant of the fact that i am an introvert, it is just hard to accept oneself when everybody demands you to be loud and get out of your shell and a lot of people kinda act like you are either dumb or an a**hole for being quietk (specially in university and in the workplace)

I'm a shy extrovert - I enjoy going out and engaging in social activities, but maintaining relationships with people can be difficult at times. I do my best to socialize and make friendly acquaintances with people, but most of them are so busy with their own lives in this day and age to make time for me even when I try to make time for them. And a lot of times it's just difficult finding someone to relate to who you can feel comfortable around with and make you feel comfortable with yourself. More often than not I'm largely ignored. It doesn't help that I'm on the Spectrum, and although I am higher functioning (Autism with Preserved Intellect), sadly it's even harder for me to be associated with other members of my kind. I prefer neurotypical people, and I don't want to be defined by my disability, but be seen as a human being who's no different from the rest, just trying to live life out on my own terms and find someone out there who can understand and accept me for who I am!

I agree, it's not a battle on who's better than the other, we need both, around 50-50 like it's already. Also in eastern society, it's prettry the opposite (and it's not better). Personally, I'm extroverted introvert, so I need people but I need alone time but I need people, it's a difficult balance to maintain.

When a large majority of the population claims to be introverted the word looses all meaning. How many people say they're extroverts? It's better to just judge characters, but even that is difficult. There are so many other factors like an extrovert might not like people or an introvert might like them and social anxiety is a separate thing.

(see username) I remember having a breakdown in a restaurant during a family vacation some time during elementary school. When my mom asked what was wrong, all I could say was "There's been too many people for too long." I'm so grateful that of my two best friends, one is a fellow introvert and the other is an ambivert - she understands our need for movie nights at home but also gets us out to do things we otherwise wouldn't have tried.

Introversion does not always equal meekness or being a pushover, just like extroversion does not always equal boldness and confidence. No one is a monolith and its good to remember that.

What I dislike the most about this is when people ask me "oh are you shy? You seem like a sjy person"....wel duhhhh now leave me alone. It's such a stupid question. What if someone is not shy but simply doesn't like to talk all the time 🙄

One important thing to remember is even Jung was quoted as saying, “There is no such thing as a pure ‐ extrovert or a pure introvert. Such a man would be in the lunatic asylum. Those are only terms to designate a certain penchant, a certain tendency.”

I think I'm starting to become more introverted as I get older. It's most noticable when I'm at work I got to breaks or lunch O like to go to the cafeteria when there are little no people around or if off somewhwere not too many people go. My neighbor is very queit especially at night. That use to bug me when I was in my teens & 20s but now I enjoy it. Oddly enough when the pandemic was happening I was on edge because I was a very out going person. I still like going out but I noticed I haven't been going out as much

Hermione seems like an extrovert/ambivert to me. One of the first times we see her, she is helping Neville go door to door looking for his toad, plus she always raises her hand in class. She's definitely not quiet. Even when she reads, she's usually not alone. I don't see her taking breaks from socializing. She's just a bit socially awkward and stiff (more so in the books). Idk 🤷♀️

A lot of people in the comments are talking about normalizing introversion, yet it seems that no one wants to claim shyness as their atribute. It seems that sitting at home and being by yourself should be congratulated, while being shy is still embarassing somehow. I really don't get that, it shouldn't be this way. If we're celebrating introversion, we should accept shy people just as much.
