It honestly makes me kinda mad that women are only fertile once a month whereas men are all the time, yet women are the ones who are « expected » to use birth control. Great, well thought out video, as always! ❤️

AudreeeG Well, technically we are fertile a few days before ovulation and one day after ovulation but you have a very valid point! There should be more options for men!

thatgirllarisa Just remember to keep in mind that it's not through lack of trying. People have been trying to make male birth control for a RRALLY long time, but most of the experiments so far have either been too ineffective, it have cause permanent infertility and death.
@rosemfall6717

A lot of the birth control options that have been created for men have never made it to market because it's assumed the majority will be unwilling to deal with even minor symptoms like weight gain or lowered sex drive (all things women on birth control can be susceptible to). Female birth control has been linked to permanent infertility and death (and a handful of other serious side effects) and women are still expected to deal. There really is no other explanation expect for patriarchy.
@badoe7138

Rose Fall Just for context, I had commented to you before watching the video. Now after watching the video, the reason seems pretty obvious, and one that you've just mentioned in your reply. It's not because of the patriarchy, it's because the manufacturers are probably CORRECT in assuming that there would be no market for male birth control, at least not until something comes out which is proven to be totally safe. Men would love not having to worry about getting a woman pregnant, especially if it meant never having to wear a condom again. However, men don't have any reason to risk permanently damaging their body in the same way that women do. As a man, my only experience with periods are through friends and girlfriends who've expressed to me plenty of times why periods suck. They suck so bad, that eventually any person in their right mind would try to find a way to make them stop. It makes sense that women are more willing to risk trying options, such as hormonal birth control, when the alternative is that constant dread and discomfort. Men don't get periods, so there wouldn't even be a reason to look into birth control until they were in a relationship. Also, men don't get pregnant. Pregnancy, in and of itself, is a long laborious process that could possibly end in death. If pregnancy had a chance to kill men, then you'd bet we'd use more than just condoms. That being said, the ingredients needed to manufacture birth control are already very expensive. No company, with any proper business sense, would spend millions of dollars trying to sell a very risky product to a consumer base that have no proper incentive to buy that product.
@rosemfall6717
6 жыл бұрын
Badoe713 Totally agree with everything you said. When I said that the reason male birth control isn't a thing is because of the patriarchy, I just meant that I feel like our society doesn't value women and their well being the same way it does men, and that's why men arent expected to consider using a product that would suscept them to the same symptoms so many women have to deal with. A lot of men wouldn't consider taking birth control because they dont want to deal with the side effects. Although you make a good point by saying there's less at stake for them, I think part of the problem is also that they consider most forms of birth control the womens responsibility.

Exactly, I'll never understand why dudes don't have more methods of birth control. I saw a post a while back about this issue and I can't stop thinking about it: "Women can only have a baby once a year, yet men have the possibility of making 365 babies a year, if thats the case then why don't men have more responsibility/forms of birth control?" Just something to think about.
@kaleighkiwixoxo

Socializing_ Ironically I'm assuming you mean 12+ times a year not once? Women don't ovulate once a year. Point is still valid but thought that was important to note.
@x8holly8x

Because it's substantially harder to stop a male's sperm than it is to stop a females ovulation. Right now the men can get the snip and that's it. Male birth control pills are in trials still, it stops the production of sperm in the testes, but it's not ready yet. I'd also never want the risk of a baby growing inside of me dependent on whether or not a man has remembered to take his pill or not. Women carry babies inside of them, it always will and should be the choice of the woman.
@socializing_ironically3681

x8holly8x I understand that women do and should have the choice whether or not to have a child, and I understand when you say you personally don't trust a man to remember his pills in such a situation, BUT I have to emphasize that it "takes two to tango". The fact that it is easier to control ovulation and the fact that women get pregnant due to sex doesn't mean that the women should be the only one responsible to provide the birth control. If both the male and the female want to have sex and not have a baby, then both should be responsible for preventing it.

I got pregnant while taking the pill (I had been taking another medication that contradicted the full effects of my oral contraceptives). I decided for health and personal reasons to have an abortion, however when I told my partner, his immediate reaction was "You must have missed a pill, that's not on me." (No we are not together anymore, yes that is largely why.) I understand I chose to have this consensual, heterosexual sex and therefore I am responsible for 50% of the "aftermath" and "possibilities" if you will. I also understand, he is as well. Even if I had missed a pill- there should be another way for men to contribute to the prevention of pregnancy. Accidents happen, people are human, emotions run high during sex and that's okay. I place no blame and the situation turned out to be just fine. I just feel as though it takes 2 people to have sex, so why does it not take 2 people to prevent unwanted consequences of sex? Men have the ability to create 365 babies a year for their entire life. I think that's great and all- however, it saddens me that we live in a world that ignores viable male birth control options for the pure fact that it is not marketable and will not bring money into an industry that has more than enough. In the end, money would be saved on abortions, birth control medications and implantation devices, ultrasounds etc. as the number of unwanted pregnancies would decrease and the need for women to take oral contraceptives or implantation devices would also decrease. Great video Arden, you are always so lovely. P.S. Your book is phenomenal. I went on a trip and finished the entire thing on the flight there. I would absolutely love to be your friend.

Nexplanon or Implanon, is a little plastic thing that they insert into the arm and it releases hormones to keep you from getting pregnant and it lasts for like 3 years! I love mine because I only get periods once every few months and they're very light with super easy symptoms. I really hate that birth control comes with so many side affects, isn’t possibly getting pregnant enough? I have remained abstinent due to being scared of gaining more weight or suffering with pimples, I haven’t even done the deed how can I even think of inserting something into my body? Condoms just scare me and I feel like it’s not clear whether it should be me or my boyfriend who should be responsible in carrying it. It’s just too many obstacles, I’m glad planned parenthood is there to help though! As I grow older I love being able to go somewhere to talk/ figure out how I want to deal with this and I’m glad there’s a place for that. It really hurts me that they get a bad reputation for a service they provide but don’t get recognition for the other things they provide that are literally life saving. Thank you for making this video.

Orangemagnet sadly, hormonal birth control is really delicate since the hormonal balances in your body also are. Meddling with it can cause a cascade of different effects. Sometimes it takes time to find one that fits your body, and I understand you not wanting to go through it cause it can (and it is for a lot of people!) be hell. I recommend finding out as much info before and trying one out that you’re comfortable with. Also making your boyfriend understand that it is both of your jobs to do this. It isnt just yours. Maybe finding a happy medium where both of you carry condoms, or he helps you pay half of whatever form of BC you decide on using. Best of luck! 💕

I’m sorry your experiences with birth control have been so turbulent. I will say that for me, birth control has been life saving. I’ve been on Loestrin for almost five years and it is AMAZING. Clear skin, better mood, no periods (before my periods would last two weeks and I wouldn’t be able to go to work or school bc I couldn’t really walk or hold down food and I would pass out from blood loss). For me, the pill allowed me to take control of my life and body. I know putting hormones and chemicals in your body scares some people but sometimes you need that, sometimes the body is not a magical well functioning machine and it needs help. Lurveee this video! When it comes to the pill there's a lot of talk, especially on social media, about how 'unnatural' it is. It's definitely not perfect and I know it has a negative impact on a lot of women but what I find dangerous is this rhetoric that taking hormonal medication is not natural and it messes with your body. I personally have found taking the pill so liberating and even though I wish a contraceptive for men was around I think I'd keep taking it anyway, as well. I feel like I'm finally not at the mercy of mother nature; my periods are shorter, lighter, less painful, I can have them when I like, if I like. I think of it like any modern medicine, if I was scared anything unnatural being in my body I probably would've died of the measles or polio a long time ago. What I wish is that more research was put into developing hormonal contraception and improving the many side effects. It feels like I'm taking a pill not too dissimilar as what women would've first taken in the 60s, but with your excellent points about the economic impact of the industry I can see why it's not changed much. :(

I have nexplanon and it's amazing! It's a small little plastic bar that gets implanted into one of your upper arms and it releases hormones into your system to prevent pregnancy. It's an outpatient procedure and they numb you up before they put it in. It hurt me for about two weeks but now I cant even feel it unless I press into my arm. It lasts for three years. I have spotting occasionally and I get moody so often but other than that I've been fine. I highly recommend you look it up and consider it. The only thing I do NOT recommend...do NOT look up the device/needle they use to implant it until at least after you get it. You dont feel it after the numbing agent but it's not a pretty sight. Good luck Arden!

Thank you so much for making this video. I think that sexual education is so important and being responsible in sexual relationships is also important. I was really appreciative of your respect towards people who choose to abstain from sex for whatever reason. It can be a touchy subject and some people get a lot of crap for it, but it was really nice to hear you talk about it in a non judgmental way. You are great at talking about sensitive topics in mature and informative ways. Please keep doing this!

I actually love being on the pill. I've been on and off it a few times, just to see how I feel without it (even though now I read it's not a good idea to do that) but I've come to the conclusion that I really enjoy being on it as it makes me feel less anxious and less moody and just more put together in general. I like the control of knowing exactly when my periods are and how long they will last and the option to skip them. In the past I always dealt with irregular periods of varying lengths, so this really works for me. I like it despite it being birth control, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see male birth control. I agree with everything you say about the responsibility relying heavily on women, and it would be great if that could be more balanced.

Finally someone willing to talk about this! After a lot of research I decided on the patch. I've been on it for 5 years and its the best thing I ever did. I am TERRIFIED of trying to find a form of birth control that works with my body. I haven’t been on birth control before so I’m sittin here freakin out every time I think about it. Since I’m not dating anyone atm, I’m conflicted on whether I should figure out my birth control situation before all of that happens, or whether I should wait until I’m with someone and take them with me on the crazy adventure that is female birth control so that they can truly understand how much of a pain in the ass it is. Any advice would be v v appreciated 🙃

I'd definitely recommend getting birth control as soon as you feel ready! I got my first birth control (Nexplanon) a month or so before I met my current boyfriend (of +3 years now) and wasn't with anyone at the time. I got birth control simply to try it out, since I'd never had it before. I didn't have crazy bad periods or cramps or anything worse than normal, nor did I have random sex with strangers every week or anything, so the only reasoning behind it was to figure out what contraception works for me. I was lucky enough to hit the nail on the head on the first try, and haven't had a period, cramps or hormonal side effects in over 3 years, but I'd definitely recommend exploring potential birth control options sooner rather than later. Birth control is for you and affects you, not anyone else (even if they're partly the reason for it). You could try out a birth control option now, find out it isn't right for you, meet someone, they experience several different methods with you. Either way, definitely do some research and try them out (although I wouldn't recommend going for the IUD straight away, mainly because it's harder to insert and remove and if you're keeping your options open/testing birth controls, if it's wrong for you then it's a lot of hassle to go through in a short time span).

Talk to your doctor. It’s not super crazy or scary I promise. I’ve been on Tri Sprintec for 5 years and have never had any issues on it. Don’t be afraid of the pill is my advice. The amount of hormones in it is really low, side effects are strongest at the beginning but a lot of it is a placebo really. The pill does not turn you into a monster honestly. The whole “PUTTING EXTRA HORMONES IN YOUR BODY AHHH” is kind of a pseudoscientific fear. For the most part, hormones in the pill actually are way more stable and less fluctuating than your natural cycle is. That’s why it’s used to regulate periods/make them lighter and less painful, clear up acne, etc

Hi Arden! I feel the *exact* same way about NuvaRing and experienced the same love/hate relationship with it. I was super cautious when looking into getting an IUD as an alternative. I really wanted non-hormonal BC, so I was happy to hear about the copper IUD! It has been AMAZING. I’ll admit, the procedure was very painful. But within a day, a short nap and some self-care put me back on my feet. Since then I’ve have *no* side effects and hope to spread some good words surrounding the use of copper IUDs. I was really intimidated when reading about other’s extremely negative views/experiences surrounding IUDs, so I hope this little comment helps someone out there breathe a little easier as they’re considering the copper IUD as an option for them!

Love this video! Just wanted to add someone that I found out and had never heard before - the pill can increase your chance of getting a stroke. Especially if you know that this is in your family, its recommended to stay away from the pill. As soon as my grandma had one last year, I stopped taking mine (had been on it for 8+ years). Just in case some of you haven't heard that either!

That's true for pills that contain both estrogen and progesterone. It's more likely if you suffer from migraines, have high blood pressure, or smoke. However, there are progestin-only pills and IUDs, just like you said!
@idamoaa8185

One thing to notice, is that most of the side effects only apply for the first three months after going on the pill; this means that yes, you have a slight higher risk of getting a stroke on the pill, but if there hasn't been any signs of it after the first three months, you're fine. This is why "taking a break" from the pill is a bad idea, cause then you have to go though those first three months again. And the reasoning behind allowing this risk is that getting pregnant is waaaay more risky. Especially when it comes to the bigger risks like stroke. But I do think it's interesting that this wasn't something you knew about. In Norway, that's the first thing they talk about when you go to a doctor and talk about birth control 🤔

Thank you for making this video! So refreshing to hear someone with opinions that you display so matter-of-factly. Regarding the 91% success rate for birth control pills- I spoke to my doctor about this and asked why! She said that the pill itself is truly like 99% effective, its the patient compliance that lowers it. Like you said, it's hard to remember to take it, so overall that lessens the entire percentage in case you forget now and again.

I have an IUD in and it's the cheapest form of birth control EVER. It works for 5 years and I only paid about $80 CAD for it (lucky for me, I am covered under my Canadian university's student insurance plan). Can you believe that? $80 for FIVE YEARS. And it has the highest success rate. I am not getting pregnant anytime soon. I'm a little skeptical of the way you made IUDs sound so dangerous and so "risky" because they're not. Neither the copper one or the hormonal one. There are risks, but it's like less than a 1% chance of any of those happening. IUDs are awesome and I highly recommend. I did experience side effects: wonky period, lots of discharge, and bad acne, but to me, those side effects were totally worth it for the amount of protection I was getting, and my favorite thing about the IUD is that after getting it inserted, I literally have to do NOTHING else. The insertion hurt, but it was pain that I could handle no problem. I really wanted to point out the importance of using a birth control method PLUS condoms, because condoms protect against STIs whilst most other methods don't. With the IUD in, I still use condoms, and it's so much less messy with a condom. I've also used birth control pills for a long time and LOVED them because they cleared up my acne, made my periods really regular, and didn't really change anything else about my life. I changed from the pill to the IUD because I was tired of having to take a pill every day. Hope my experience helped someone out there! I've had an excellent experience with birth control and hope everyone else does too!

Amazing that you got your IUD for that cheap! Unfortunately, iud's don't work for everyone. I paid 500€ for mine and after only one and a half years it moved (there are no real reasons why, some just do), resulting in my doctor removing it, since it loses its protection immediately when moved! i was not protected for over 3 months without noticing, which was so risky! so i am sadly going back to the pill again…

I have been using contraceptive patches for over 5 years now and I love it. It kind of works the same way the pill does (so yeah, it's a hormonal contraceptive) but you just stick it on your bum or your back or somewhere on your body once a week, leave it on there and take a week long break every 3 weeks. I get that a lot of people don't want to take hormones but for me it regulated my period (I've had the craziest cycle before - or actually non at all. Used to get my period for like 2 weeks, then nothing for 4 months, then a 3 day period, then a week later another 10 day period, then nothing for 2 months, then something crazy again, you get it). I used to take the pill but I am a very forgetful person so taking it every day at the same time was kind of hard for me to do, with the patches I have a 24 hour window every week to stick a new patch on and that's it. I didn't experience any side effects whatsoever, I didn't get pregnant yet, so it seems to do its job perfectly great.

No they cant, because they woulsnt care: the woman would be the one ending up with the lifechanging problem, not them. So of course we wouldnt be able to trust them with a pill..... There has been testing for YEARS to give men birth control, but since the poor dudes experienced 2 side effects (and not even the most debilitating ones women get), the research got suspended. One year to another you might hear 'is this the year we'll have a male pill?', but nothing moves and it wont because men arent willing to do any of this (boo hoo mild mood swings), but women ARE PUT THROUGH SO MUCH WORSE forever. They dont give a F about women. Men want to F but are super unwilling to take ANY responsibilities whatsoever to prevent pregnancies! Super selfish. Vasectomies are so much safer than tubal ligation, and super F cheap in comparison!! Men constantly complain that women dont want sex, and men dont want kids: and YET men cant take one step of effort to make it safer for women...... Such BS! The male pill will never see the day, and men dont get vasectomies because they are scared of not being men anymore: tells you a lot about how selfish and delusional they are. Nothing changes for them, no decrease in livido, no hormonal changes, etc The only difference ia that they dont produce sperm anymore. THATS IT!!! If you think men are strong, this is ONE proof among so many that they are controlles by their FEAR. Women do and endure so much, and are still called weak and illogical.

I was on nexplanon for a year and a half and I went absolutely nuts. My hormones we're out of wack, my moods shifted constantly, and it caused me to become majorly depressed. It was also supposed to stop my period after 6 months, but I would bleed for weeks at a time and out of no where. I got it taken out and, no kidding, within a week I was feeling like myself again. Now I'm not on any birth control because I'm giving my body a break. My boyfriend and I don't use any form of contraception because he can't have children so we don't see the point! Love your video, so informative!!

Almost a year ago I had an IUD insertion of a non-copper, hormonal IUD, primarily for the purpose of lessening my crazy periods. I had regular, but very frequent (i.e. every three weeks) periods which were extremely heavy and gave me cramps as well. Since the insertion, my period has essentially stopped which has made my life SO much easier and I have had no problems with it. I love it for that, plus no babies for me which is always a plus. Although it's hormonal, I personally haven't experienced any major negative side effects, apart from a slight worsening of my skin, but I would take that over losing the other benefits any day. It's definitely one of my best decisions, and am 100% pro-IUD! Thank you for this video Arden, your content is so important and you make KZitem a better platform.

Really liked the video! This issue should be discussed much more often!! I am 27 and still trying to figure out which contraceptive method is right for me. The pill or other hormonal contraceptives aren't for sure (I have had the same side effects you mentioned when talking about the pill with all of them), non-hormonal IUD seems quite scary and not the best option considering also its side effects (I would die if I started having even heavier or longer periods) and condoms... I have to admit they are quite a pain in the arse when you are in a stable long-term relationship. Here in Spain contraceptives are not the most expensive thing in the world and are more or less available to the average person easily (although they are not free). However, the thing that bothers me the most is that it seems that no one is making an effort to improve what we currently have in the market (which is clearly insufficient to me) or to change the fact that almost everything is still targeted exclusively to women, who shouldn't be the only ones taking the burden on this very important matter!

I started taking the pill when I was 14 because of such intense period cramps and it was absolutely terrible. i threw up nearly every week and was in intense pain always. the arm implant has made it so i pretty much never get my period or period cramps!! also no side effects! since it goes in your arm i think it’s less invasive than an iud. ❤️❤️

Love the way you cover this super important topic! I just wanted to leave my experience with the hormonal IUD in case anyone is interested. I'm 18, have a steady boyfriend, and never used any other form of birth control before the IUD (besides condoms). I chose the IUD because I wanted the most effective form of birth control and have family history of blood clots, so I couldn't use estrogen. I've had my IUD for 3-4 months now, and I love it so far. Yes, the insertion was painful--probably the most painful experience of my life--but it has been so worth it. I had some light bleeding/cramping for about a month, which can last for up to 6 months, but it completely stopped my period and I have no more cramps and forget that I have it most of the time. The pain in the beginning was completely worth it, as I am a very anxious person and loved that I felt like I was taking control of my body. It's so nice to know that I'm not going to have a period for 5 years, and there's only a 0.3% chance of pregnancy along with that. Another small, unimportant bonus: my tiny boobs have gotten slightly larger, so yay.

Great video, but actually missed another form of birth control which has gained more popularity in the recent years (at least in Germany). I share the same views with you on the mentioned forms of birth control. Didn't like the pill or the Nuvaring etc. Right now i practice what we call natural family planning (not sure how its talked about in other countries). Its a method where you get to know your body really well. You have to combine checking your temperature every morning with some other stuff that is happening to your body. If you use this method right its as safe as taking the pill. It might sound complicated but the key is to learn when your fertile days are in order to use condoms or stay abstinent for these specific days. It has worked great for me especially because i didn't want to put hormones into my body.

As far as i know it also works for women who have irregular cycles (i have them too). In that case the period of time where you have to use condoms can be longer. The longer you use this kind of method the better you get to know your body and the signs. I really can't tell you about how hormonal imbalances can effect this method but I'm sure you can find information online or ask a doctor.

Hi Arden! Great video, I absolutely agree that more attention should be paid to finding viable male contraceptive options. Even though it's easier (and more lucrative) to focus on the hormonal, female aspect of things. I just wanted to add that there are also contraceptive injections such as NUR-isterate, as well as a contraceptive implant. These are also hormonal, specifically progesterone focused if I'm not mistaken.

I have never had seks before, I am 21 and I've been on birth control since I was 16 to lighten and control my menstruation. I quit my birth control pill almost a year ago now and I love it! My menstruation is lighter now and I have a lot less acne, I do have more cravings though. I also feel like my emotions aren't toned down anymore, so that has been interesting. I am a strong believer that there are too many people on this earth and I really don't want to give birth to a baby (although this is really quite a miracle, I find it beautiful and nice, but I don't want that kind of wonder world I may come to live in, have an impact on this earth). I have been thinking about getting sterilized, but I find it a bit scary and I've always been talking about how much shit women have to go through, just because our bodies work differently and men tend to rule the world, so I really enjoyed this video! We do not only have to empower women, but we have to take it upon ourselves to show men what cards we get dealt and how they can help us, so live can get more balanced.

*I highly suggest you shop around for a gynecological surgeon if you're considering an IUD, dont just see anyone.* I think IUD's REALLY depend on the doctor who insets them. My doctor was so so so so good. He took what I wanted into consideration which was a copper IUD, and made sure I completely understood the side effects and the differences between the IUD's. Then he did a thorough exam of my cervix to make sure that he was ordering me the right size which I think was super important. Then while he was inserting it he had me cough a bunch. And I barely felt a thing. There was only one big pinch as the wings went out. And the nurse was making sure I wasn't going into shock the whole time, whereas for some of my friends, they only got checked on when they were actually going into shock! And after insertion I had just mild mild suggestion of cramps, I could have actually gone to work that day. I had an absolutely wonderful experience getting my IUD and I highly suggest you shop around for a gynecological surgeon if you're considering it, dont just see anyone.

Nalanzazu lol this is so true. My mom has been getting hers at a gynaecologist for years now, and every time she has to get a new one she has to get a referral from our doctor (like, the GP) and he keeps telling her he can place the IUD himself and that she doesn't need to go to a gynaecologist. My mom refuses though, because a GP does it like maybe once every 6 months and a gynaecologist like 3 every week. obviously she wants the expert to do it! And when I went in to discuss an implanon for myself, he also tried to convince me to let him put an IUD in me. That's not even what I came for?! It's like he has to place one every few months in order to keep being allowed to do it hahahha

The one I have is called Nexplanon and I've had it for a few months and I don't have a period and very little acne. The only problem I've had is is that it lowered my sex drive. But I just thought it was interesting that it wasn't mentioned because I know a lot of people who have it/have had it. Great video tho!!! Love you Arden 💖💖

I had it for around 4 months and basically bled every single day for that period. It lowered my sex drive and prevented me from losing weight. My gynecologist said it works for some people and for other it doesn’t. Sadly it didn’t work for me.

I began natural birth control using Lady Comp to help track my cycle. I will never go back to other forms. It is so wonderful to have my period back after years of not because of birth control. On the days where I am ovulating, my bf and I use a condom, but we get plenty of days where we don't have it. Love it.

Yeah! It's so simple just take your temperature everyday. You can do this yourself too without the Lady Comp but it's just easier to do it with.

You have to know that it is one of the most unreliable methods of birth control. The body is sometimes unpredictable and you can still get pregnant when you think it's a "safe" time. Just be careful ;) xx

I did quite a lot of bit of research and the Lady Comp is 99.3% effective. It's really important to track your cycle for a while before forgoing protection.

www.lady-comp.co.uk/good-know/faq/ Here's a good answer from Lady Comp. Basically, it's no problem at all. If you have sever fluctuations, you would get more yellow and red days which means to use protection but if it is general irregularity, such as several day length fluctuations, do not make a difference. That's why I choose to go with the device rather than an app or doing it on my own. It's $500 but lasts for every and only needs a battery change once in a while and never gets rid of your data. I'm 33 so I feel that I would have never thought of doing natural birth control in my twenties but I wish I had. It's as easy as using the pill. Before that I did the shot (which Arden didn't mention) the Depo. Evil thing. Breaks down your bones, takes away your period and makes you gain weight. Going off of it and onto natural felt like a fresh ocean breeze coming through my stuffy window.

Hey! One that you didn't talk about, that I actually have, is the arm implant. I specifically have Nexplanon, and it works quite well. It is hormonal, but unlike the pill it only uses one type of hormone (progestin). Works similar to pill, mucus and that. It lasts for 3 years, is 99% effective, and literally takes 5 minutes to put in. The only bad side effect for me is slightly more emotions (but I am depressive and take no medication for it, so not sure exactly if that is the cause). My periods completely stopped too, so no more paying for pad/tampons. It is kind of expensive, at 1300 with no insurance, and up to 300 to remove. Personally really love it, been using it for about a year and seems to work for a lot of other people. Do some research on it if you're interested, I know that some groups of people may not be able to use it because of pre-existing medical conditions, but I'd say its worth a look.

I started having sex when I was 13 and always used condoms, which are great and probably my favorite form of birth control today but they are wasteful and dull the sensation quite a bit. When I was 14 I went on the pill through Planned Parenthood, I’ve always had great experiences there, super accepting and generous people. I was on the pill for a little over a year and I only ever got my period for one day every cycle. Super light, no cramps. (Keep in mind regularly I have very heavy periods lasting 6-8 days with bad cramps) you would think this would be great! But my body felt horrible. No matter the time in my cycle I was pretty irritable and my sex drive went down. I was constantly worried about taking it every night and since I was so young my partner and I still used the pull out method on top of that. I really want to start charting my cycles and using that as my birth control method but my partner is completely uninterested and I feel trapped in my own body. I feel like I’m being punished for something I can’t control. It’s automatically my responsibility to not get pregnant, it’s not sexy and I wish more men were involved in the process, because hey guess what? Just because I’m born with a uterus doesn’t mean I’m just thrilled to deal with this shit. Both parties should be held just as accountable for preventing or trying for pregnancy. Thanks for making this video, love hearing about different experiences for women and people with a uterus. This needs to be talked about more❤️

hey! remember the pull out method and the charting-your-cycles method aren't that effective since sperm could still get out before the ejaculation + you can basically get pregnant at anytime in your cycle.

I've never really used "birth control" as a contraceptive. I have PCOS so I've been trying for years to get my shit together with that but it's expensive so I'm just letting my hormones run wild a free. If you look it up, just know that I have the full spectrum of signs and symptoms. Birth control was helpful in that it helped to regulate my severely irregular and painful periods but it's not a long term solution for me so I need to do something else. Anyway, I think this was a well done and very informative video and I appreciate all the hard work that went into it :) That's all lol.

What a fantastic video Arden! I’m currently interning at the International Planned Parenthood Federation and we’re trying to find new ways to reach out to young people and this is amazing. I completely agree with the fact that young women tend to stick with forms of contraception without being aware of their side effects. Would love to see more videos if this sort, please reach out if you’d like extra information/resources :)

usually I use a combo of condoms and the pill because I just don’t want any accidents ya know? I’m on tri lo marzia and it’s worked great for me so far!! I’ve been on it for about six months and other than the sometimes screwy periods everything has been great!! I’ve noticed a big difference in my skin and my mood has actually gotten a lot better since taking it. I take zoloft (anti depressant) as well and I was scared the two might not work together but honestly I’ve found it’s made me feel better!!
