The kicking game starts with the Long Snapper....and notice that the first FG made the holder had to field a ball bounced toward him. My sister had a friend who had a long career in the NFL as a Long Snapper and there's a lot more to it than many realize. The good ones spin the ball consistently so the holder catches it with the laces in the same orientation every snap...which makes his job of spinning the ball to align the laces then orient the ball in two planes so the kicker can strike it accurately a lot easier. I'd wager if you had every NFL kicker make 100 tries off a tee from 50 yds they'd all be 99% or better...but then throw in the variable of Long Snap and holder...and it gets difficult. Then throw in the weather and field conditions and you see missed extra points as well as long FG's. The poor kickers get the blame for a miss....but often it's not really their fault.

It is determined based on the location of the ball on the last play. If you go out of bounds on the left half of the field, the ball will be put on the left hash. The ball doesn't have to go out of bounds either. Just whatever side of the field the ball is on, that's the hash they use. When games end with a field goal, there is sometimes a play where the team will run a sweep to get the hash they want.

One of the biggest factors in field goals is the snap, and subsequently the hold. If the snap is off center, particularly if it is low the holder doesn’t have time to get the ball set correctly. It is beyond critical that the laces be absolutely centered in the front Look how small the lacing is on a baseball and a pitch only travels 21-22 yards, but the baseball sometimes moves a couple feet down/sideways. The ball movement is dependent on how the pitcher grips the laces. Two seam vs. four seam. If the laces aren’t centered on the football the ball will curve, sometimes dramatically. You’ll see kicks that appear to be good, then curve. Add in wind and you have an extra factor The kicker takes the grief but maybe isn’t his fault

No, they didn't. The 49ers had 3 drives in the first half. 1 punt. 1 TD. 1 blocked FG that would have been. Credit to Green Bay for the block. But they weren't knocking the 49ers around. Purdy had a 107.6 QB rating and the 49ers converted 67% of their third downs. McCaffery was 17/98 (5.8 YPC) and 2 TDs. The RAIN was the only thing that hurt the 49ers. They gave three explosives because defenders fell down plus Purdy struggled for the 3rd quarter and part of the 4th due to the heavy rain. Don't push ESPN's bad takes. Some of us actually paid attention and didn't try to create stories.

I've never liked the concept of special teams for kicking. Why is a long snapper needed? They bring in players who have been sitting on the bench to make a play at crucial times in the game. Why not let the center who has been snapping the ball for the whole game snap the ball? He would be more accustomed to the feel of the ball, especially in the weather. Why not let the quarterback, who has been taking snaps all game, hold the ball on kicks. I'm old so I remember Bart Starr holding on kicks. It also keeps the defense honest because the Starr could catch the snap and turn and throw to a receiver that wasn't covered. Probably the best tandem ever were Hornung as the kicker and Starr as the holder. Either man could throw the ball or run it.

Semantics. Who cares. Packers can't beat the 49ers in the playoffs.@@IsaacPunts

No evidence he could improve to the desired skill. Take a vet and sign a younger prospect

I was surprised they didn't sign a proven veteran for the playoffs. That's fine to believe and develop this guy for the future. But with stakes like this, you need someone who can automatically make these shots.

Do you think that is easy or something to just sign a kicker? Do you think 9ers really want Moody, an unproven rookie to be their kicker either seeing he lost the 9ers 2 games in the regular season to be their kicker in the playoffs?
