BALANI Master Clothier, David, walks us through some common menswear faux pas.
Double breasted jackets: Double breasted jackets (DB) tend to go in and out of style among major designers. However, a timeless approach to DBs is to consider your stature. Typically, taller, leaner body types can accommodate the boxy cut of a DB, but those with less of a height advantage should avoid this type of jacket altogether.
Button down collar with a tie: One of David’s biggest pet peeves: the button down collar with a tie. Pairing a button down collar with a tie, even a more casual tie like knit, can crowd your neckline and appear clunky. Spread collars are the only type of shirt you should pair with a tie and reserve button down collars for more casual pairing, such as a sport coat.
Not dressing for your skin tone: When selecting fabrics for your custom pieces, it’s essential to choose shades that flatter your skin tone. There are two main types of complexions to consider:
Warm: Those with warm complexions will have more yellow undertones in their skin. They often have reddish or light blonde hair. These individuals should avoid jewel tones and opt for more earthy, autumn shades.
Cool: Those with cool complexions have more pink undertones in their skin and often have darker hair than warmer complexions. If you’re a cooler complexion, like David, avoid earthy or autumn tones. Instead, go with more vibrant jewel tones. If you want to add a little brown to your wardrobe, consider cooler shades of mocha and jewel tone details, such as a blue plaid or slack.
