I think everyone goes through the "impulsive buyer" stage in their life. For me, I grew up poor and I never really had nice stuff growing up. When I started making money, all I wanted to do was just buy things that I felt I've always missed out on. After awhile, you get tired of frivolous things because now you want to afford BIG life purchases like a house or a car. I honestly wouldn't tell a younger person to just save save save for their retirement...I think they need to learn this lesson as they go through life. It's OK to spend on luxury goods, you're living your life, just spend it wisely!

So true. It seems that the term "investment" is thrown around loosely to justify shopping. What's the point in buying handbags if you're not going to enjoy them later and sell them? You're not going to get over your money's worth, so just buy items you know you're going to use.

I feel so many luxury KZitemrs are suffering from depression that they hide by shopping. A lot of them find comfort in shopping when they really need to sit and do some soul searching and get to the root of their unhappiness. So many luxury YT pour money into luxury at insane amounts that's just crazy. And for what? Most of the stuff you buy, you don't even truly want! A lot of these luxury YT buy just to be able to feel that excitement and rush felt when buying a luxury item. Then they run home and record their video of them unboxing it, and upload it in here to feel the satisfaction of us going ohhhhh and ahhhhhh! Once that excitement wears off from buying their latest new item, they're back on the hunt for the next luxury item to buy. They literally live their lives chasing after luxury items! I love luxury too, but I'm not blowing insane amounts on it per year cause my money is valuable to me than to consistently pour money into these filthy rich luxury houses that's selling overpriced handbags and luxury items. Lets be honest here! We all know this stuff is well overpriced. So I'm not buying it like my life depends on it, as I see here on YT. I've bought two bags this year and I won't be buying anymore. I refuse to! My money goes towards saving, helping my son that's in college, and investing. I started unsubscribing from a lot of luxury KZitemrs because they will get the mental help they need if ppl stop watching this mess. If they sat and did the math and added up how much they spend on this stuff, they would feel sick. You lose tons of money putting stuff up for sale on the preowned market that you never should have purchased. Just wasting money! Impulse shopping and shopping just to say you have something. It goes on all day long here on YT. Some luxury KZitemrs upload an unboxing video damn near every week! It's just crazy! Half of the handbags they own, I bet they don't even carry them. Anyway, enough from me. I just speak my mind and like to be blatant. And I've gotten real tired of this KZitem luxury community.

I’ve started the habit of making a visual wish list by cutting and pasting photos of what I really want with the price next to it. Then I wait for as long as I can, months hopefully, and revisit the list. Surprisingly, many items are no longer really wanted!!! I’ve saved a lot on impulse shopping. I love shopping for beautiful things but before I make the purchase, I check that I really want the item first. 😀

These people do more unboxings than the meals they eat in a day it’s ridiculous. Most people don’t have that kind of money it’s also delusional to put this materialistic life style before what’s important in life. Eg: saving for house or car. Sad thing is what was once a occasional purchase you’d enjoy for years to come, has now become disposable fashion, new bag design every other month 🤦🏽♀️

I would like to hear your thoughts on the concept of having a "collection." Doesn't the trend to collect something force people to think they need more and more? I remember my mother having two handbags: one for everyday and one for special occasions. Each one went with everything else she wore. If your wardrobe is coordinated, you don't need a different bag or jewelry to create a different look everytime you get dressed.
@ColourfulNoir

Actually I won’t think of the money as being wasted. You have enjoyed using those items so treat it as “using fee”. It’s only fair that you have to pay for what you have used. You wouldn’t have felt bad if you have bought those items because you have loved them instead of with the intention to earn a buck. It’s all about mindset. Just like a car. It depreciates once the wheels touch the ground. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Rolls Royce or Honda. You have used it so you should pay for the amount of time that the item was used. It’s just fair.

My rule of thumb, and advise, is to avoid "Trend" items. If one buys something, it's because it will #1, have daily use and add value to ones daily routine, and #2. Because one truly loves it, and it compliments ones existing wardrobe. The mindset should never be just to resale. In most cases, people lose time and money. Great tips on respecting and valuing ones money.

Hi Eileen, I think I requested this video. I remember back in college, I calculated every item i bought, which i never wore or hardly wore, and I was amazed at the money I wasted. I think it was about $3-4K which is a lot for a student. Ever since, I've been very cautious with spending with an exception of buying a BMW in cash when I started to earn money from a career post college. That car was a huge mistake and regret. I sold it after 6 years, because every time I drove it, I wasn't happy. To make up for the loss, I am keeping my current car for as long as I can to diminish the loss. Both lessons have taught me to be careful. With the money I paid for the BMW and the added cost to trade it in for my current car (also paid in cash), my cost per wear i.e.current monthly calculation of ownership is at $335/month. I want to get it down to $250/month which is an additional 6 years to brake even. As you know I stopped shopping. I realize I don't need high street (non-designer) clothing when I really don't go anywhere to wear those clothing out.

Why weren’t you happy driving the BMW?
@dapperlygrungy3189
3 жыл бұрын
@@fashionandluxury101 I learned during ownership of my BMW X5 or whichever brand of european car, its best to least and not buy outright, because of the cost of maintenance and repairs. Also, the depreciation of BMW is astronomical because they are not a reliable brand. I was making good money and thought the BMW I'd keep for 20 years as I am not into cars and thought German cars lasts. That BMW caused me to be late for work and I missed events because something electrical or mechanical was wrong with it. It started to give me issues 2 weeks after the warranty expired. It was so expensive to repair. One tire costs me $350-400. My power windows blew-up and costs me $900. The oil/filter change would be about $300. I learned people that buy these cars are either people that love performance or people that need it for a tax right off. I also babied that car. 4 days after owning it, it got keyed. My heart dropped because i paid so much money for it. Never will I spend that kind of money on a car. NEVER! This huge lesson of careless spending taught me that if you live within your means, without having to be frugal, and know your needs and wants, you can achieve a robust savings. I can afford luxury. i choose not to indulge in them too much because I don't want to be that person that babies their expensive items or displays them. I want to enjoy and use what I buy. I buy 1 or 2 luxury items, wear them out and replace them. I go and buy as I need.

I now just watch and enjoy, my need to spend has decreased tremendously. I want to enjoy what I already have. You know what? I bought two Chanel bags last year; I haven’t used them!! I finally said to myself, enough . No more bags unless I use them or sell them. You gave me insight. I appreciate it. Thanks for responding 💕

@@fashionandluxury101 You're welcome. Two Chanel bags isn't bad. I'm all for an occasional treat once in a while. You deserve it. I don't think we should live our lives bland. But you really should enjoy your bags. Just don't buy them to only display and look at them. One more quick story on the BMW. When I was at the BMW service center, I sat next to a young girl in her early 20's. as we waited for our cars to get serviced. I assume her parents bought her a BMW Z4, the 2-seater convertible based on her age. Anyway, I over hear her on speaker phone with her dad. She was crying and upset because her Z4 gave her so many issues. Her father said, because she chose that car, it should be her responsibility to be at the service center to wait for it to be repaired. I took the conversation, in that, like me, she spent alot of time getting her car either serviced or repaired and she was missing events with her friends. I think that was a good lesson her father taught her. Many people has since told me never buy a BMW or German Car outright unless I have a tax right off.. Its better to lease that way every repair and maintenance is covered under warranty which is usually the time frame of when the lease is due. I'm not into leasing cars, because at the end of the term, you have nothing to show. This is just me. I have a friend who leases a Honda Civic and her payments are only $200/month. So leasing an economical car can be a feasible way to acquire a car without ever having to be stressed about repair and maintenance cost. Good luck.

The painful side is paying more to maintain it... in the end, to sell it at a loss to cut more maintenance costs is even more painful.. Now that is an impulse buy.. Bags are definitely not investment.. If you don't use it, its a liability.. you have to pay to maintain its condition. If you use it, the asset value goes down too as it will be prone to wear and tear but end day, your heart feel full as its not a waste of money.. You derive joy in using it.. Recently I've been reading about habituation and how it applies to shopping. It's very true, we buy a thing, get a momentary high and we go after the next purchase! That's why I like your channel so much. I've yet to purchase any expensive designer bag from chanel/lv/hermes (I have only one balenciaga), sometimes I feel like i'm being left out, but I come to your channel and feel like it's more sensible to wait until I'm in a point in life where buying these goods won't hurt my savings so much.

Wow!! You spoke so eloquently and logically. Thank you for writing and presenting this video, it is the calming voice of reason. You came up with many points I haven't thought of before such as the remorse you feel after two or three years from the purchase date, you question yourself as to why you're so keen to sell and get rid of it. The idea of "free money" from the sale proceeds is such a common trap too! My favourite part was how you succinctly addressed that even Chanel bags are consumer goods, not investment pieces. The commission lost and time you spend reselling strips any form of profit away. It certainly makes you think twice before snapping up a new item. Loved your thoughts so much! Thank you

Love your vdo , I been through it too after I sell my lv bags I felt heartbreak coz the price was very low. I used to be impulsive buyer when I was a Buddhist but after I bcom serious Christian I can stay without thinking to buy lv or Chanel not obsessed like I once did.All I can say is impulsive buyer is one for a demonic possession bcoz it’s toxic it’s not healthy. After I pray more and become closer to God I become less and less materialism 🌹😇🙏Glory to God. I think if we buy luxury bag only at special time like twice a year or once a year that bag will be so special but if buy every week it’s nothing but just expensive therapy like u say.

This is why I never spend my money on luxury jewelry (Chanel & LV earrings & accessories..etc) because the re-sell value is not great and the jewelries are not real gold or silver. Why waste my money on fake medals because of the brand name instead it's better for me to buy real gold or silver. Btw, I was thinking about a Chanel handbags but you have changed my mind.
@mylifemyjourney1
3 жыл бұрын
@@katemiller7874 I agree both company have stunning jewelries but I think its waste of money to buy pricey jewelry that don't hold their value (re-sell value) just because of the brand names. Additionally, these luxury jewelries are not real gold or silver but made from high quality metal. I bought 21k gold earrings, necklace & ring set 15.5grams for about $680 close to $700 which is the same price as the luxury earrings. In my culture, it is a custom for women to have gold jewelry set when they get married. So all the women in my family have gold set jewelry and if they decide to sell they would make twice as much money since they bought their gold set a while back and the value of the gold price has gone up. All I am saying is that gold has higher re-sell value and in the long run worth investing, which I plan to buy more.

yes buying branded jewellery like the Cartier love bracelet is just throwing money down the drain. For the same amount of money, you can invest in fine gems like black opals, padparascha sapphires, etc. These natural gems are finite in supply and their value will skyrocket over the years as supply dwindles. PLUS I'd rather look at nature's beautiful creations anyday!

I'd just as soon by costume "luxury" dupes in a corner store than buy high-end designer costume jewelry. The corner store jewelry won't have pieces falling out like the boutique luxury house jewelry. 🛍️

This is very wise indeed! I have been selling luxury items via consignment recently and they have been selling for half of their original retail price, but then the commission is 20% so you do lose a lot. I think it is fortunate, after these costly spends, that we are able to make any money back at all, though. People that spend £1000+ on huge fast fashion hauls could never do that. So, it could be worse!

You are exactly right. I always make sure I want something and will use it before I buy it. The only things I have sold are some small things I didn’t pay a lot for in the first place and things that have been in my collection for 15 or 20 years that I’m not using but are still in good condition. I can’t spend money on things to turn around and sell them shortly afterward or to inbox on camera.

Thanks Eileen for your honesty and surely not many or never ever share their losses or regret. I love shopping but definitely mindfully. Yes, there will always be another handbag, that is why i can wait and sleep on it first. Oh btw, even investment on properties is not always the best investment if there are too many already in one country. It will become glut and will therefore make the properties prices go down. Same goes to stocks. Of course we do not have any crystal ball but to choose the best (from every point that one can think of) to begin with are utmost important too. Thanks for sharing.

I went through a luxury handbag and SLG phase a few years ago. I have since sold off most of my collection. I thought I had done pretty well for myself in getting back most of my money since the preloved market has been so hot lately. But, I too, made a spreadsheet and realized I had lost more than I thought. Oh well! I thoroughly enjoyed the pieces at the time and don't have the desire to buy any more luxury right now. I only carry a few items in a wristlet and I prefer the look and functionality of some really great non-luxury brands.

I think it’s really important to consider what works for your personal style. You bought a lot of classic items and I guess some were you and some weren’t. I’m very picky about what I like, and it can even be frustrating how long it takes me to find something I am pleased with. The good news is, I like it forever. I think most of us go through this stage. I did a spreadsheet too and the total losses from over the years of luxury purchases I can put a down payment for a property. The only time I made money was buying preloved and reselling them. But I'm still glad I started my Chanel collection 10 years ago since the price now has become unaffordable. And the best purchase was an almost new gold B30 I bought preloved almost at store price at the start of the pandemic.

Love this video. There is a misconception that most Chanel handbags hold their value which has not been my experience. I fell into thinking “I can always sell it” with a Chanel bag I wasn’t sure about and I lost money selling it. Chanel is so difficult because they get sold out very fast and there are price increases. I try to think of things I sold as information about myself and my preferences for future purposes. I lost 1000 USD selling the dior book tote and now I know that big bulky bags with no closure will not work for me 😀. (As in, I should think twice even about a Birkin 30 which I love looking at.. )

There are several sides to this, you can buy for a good price and sell it later on, not only for a profit, but at least get your money back. I recently sold my Prada Double Bag, that I bought preloved for a great price (and as new condition) and sold it 3 years later for the same price. So I pretty much wore it for free.

This video is right on time because I put a Saint Laurent wallet up for sale in like new condition and the offers are less than half of what I paid for it. I am not using it, but those offers are so disappointing. I have sold excellent condition handbags in the past and always at a loss or close to retail never at a profit. I have learned a hard lesson about these items I try to ease the pain by being happy that I can recoup some of my money instead of having it sit in my closet.
