This is a very naive view of the events, just because the aristocracy weren't angered by the assassination, that's no means of dismissing it. The assassination was of a pauper killing a prince- it was a shift in ideas and attitudes of how the monarchy was viewed and how individuals and organizations could stand up to the existing powers. The reason why this needed action was so the powers could show that they wouldn't ignore the death of one of their own. This act, not just the murder itself, is what set the war in motion.

A very good point that no one seems to want to acknowledge. There was a meeting of all the crowned heads of Europe and Russia plus the French Prime Minister in 1912. What was that all about? Nothing in this time is as innocent as it seems. Wars take planning so was the 1912 meeting the start of that planning? The history for some years before this war was serious labour unrest throughout Europe, except Germany; the start of the British Labour Party and the rise of the suffragette movement, all threats to the royal establishment. The revolting peasants had to be kept in their place.

Germany wasn't a said country at this time, city states did not make a nation, as at this time it was Germanic peoples but not what we today call Germany, then it was not. Especially with a lot of it being within what was called Prussia, but that wasn't Germany either. This is so messed up, partially because the lesson gets lost in the telling as they say. The Germanic people's did not want a war but were forced into it thanks to the Austrians. The funny thing after WW2 was hearing folk from Bavaria referred to Adolf as The Austrian, the Irony was never lost on Germanic wit. Gotta love em.

According to a book I read on the first world war it explained the largest mass of Germanic towns and cities were actually part of Prussia and not in a cohesive nation with one flag. Between the Bacarian areas not in their mind being German in anything other than some part's speaking their own variations of the Germanic tongues. Some of them being unable to properly understand with certain attitudes about those from the lpwer groupings of city states. Of course the joke is people thinking germany declared war in 1914 Austria wgich has nothing to do with hermany in the same book said it was only the Austro-Hungarians who decided and thus these areas were incorporated into the conflict.
@TheLordoftheRavens

Reepacheirp firewalker Yes, the video explain the progression of events quite well, although it was simplified and the motives where not completely and thoroughly explained. The whole of Europe didn't get dragged into the war just because of some treaties. All of them wanted to fight in order to gain/maintain land and power or for nationalistic reasons, and the assassination combined with the treaties gave them a justification for doing so. So you can't really blame the entire war on one country because everyone was involved. I just wanted to point out that Germany was in fact a unified country by 1914. Of course the dialects and cultures of the different regions were not all identical, just like you find different accents and traditions throughout other countries.

Franz Ferdinand hated Slavs and minorities, also when hunting by releasing a horde of animals to mow them down with a machine gun. But he was a patriot over everything, he wanted a tripartite state with Serbia to strengthen the empire. So he opposed Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf’s constant desire for war with them.

Concerning the USA's entry into WWI, I would not discount the effects of the "Zimmermann telegram". Germany, fearing the USA's entry into the war over the issue of U-boat warfare, offered German support to Mexico, if Mexico were to invade and reacquire the territory lost in the Mexican-American War, including Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. The intercepted message galvanized American popular opinion against Germany, and drowned out the voices urging continued neutrality. This, along with the unrestricted U-boat warfare in 1917, caused the US to declare war in December.

A qoute from the hisorian Niall Ferguson author of "The war of the world"- Germany was the only country that supported the victim of terrosim against the perpertrators of terrorism. It is a well known fact that both the Kaiser and the Tsar were sincerely negotiating to avoid or at least localize the conflict so that it wouldn't diffuse. Under the pressure from his cabinet the Tsar ordered full mobilization. Again to paraphrase Ferguson, a full mobilization meant more than defending Serbia it implied an invasion of Germany (at the time their empires were adjacent).( Again to paraphrase Ferguson, why was Russia so adamant about Serbia-it was just about their pride because they were humiliated when Bosnia went toAustria.) At that point the Kaiser had no other option but to declare war in support of his ally and to protect his Empire from a mobilized threat. I am so sick of all this propaganda blaming the war on Germany! The "Germany started WW1 propaganda led to WW2

I'll do some of the bonus facts about the assassination for ya: 1. Gavrilo Princip missed his original attempt at the assassination when the grenades lobbed at the motorcade missed. After the visit, Archduke Ferdinand's driver took a wrong turn down a side street where Gavrilo, who was purchasing a sandwich at a deli, found himself positioned close enough to shoot the Archduke dead. 2. When asked by his wife if he was ok after being shot he replied "It's nothing." His last words were him pleading to his wife, Sophie, to "stay alive for the children". 3. Gavrilo's only regret about the assasination was that he unintentionally killed Ferdinand's wife, Sophie. 4. Austria planned to reject any agreement from Serbia (no matter what) in order to go to war with them.

London went to war on the continent twice, by own admission, to "balance powers" on the continent... London's standpoint, *by own admission:* "The equilibrium established by such a grouping of forces is technically known as the balance of power, and it has become almost an historical truism to identify England’s secular policy with the maintenance of this balance by throwing her weight now in this scale and now in that, but ever on the side, opposed to the political dictatorship of the strongest single, State or group at a given time." Primary source material: [Memorandum_on_the_Present_State_of_British_Relations_with_France_and_Germany] *In a nutshell = the strongest side is the default rival in peace, and the default enemy in war.* And so the London lords played their "balancing games". From: The Complete Yes Minister: *"Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least five hundred years - to create a disunited Europe.* *How absolutely funny...* They gave their diplomatic worst, were proud if it, and millions of young men from the Empire paid the price. Huddled in muddy trenches, getting their heads blown off, or drowning like rats on the seven seas. That's what you get if you play follow the leader, when these leaders play *"divide and rule"* with the continent, for own gain. Millions dead. Millions mutilated. Too bad. So sad. Price tag for these stupid "games"? *A ruined British Empire.* Good riddance. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. They "hopped on the scale" and they "hopped" their way into extinction. Good riddance.

@wasd____

The Zimmerman note only happened because the USA was already de facto involved by proxy. They were helping the British by selling them weapons and supplies, so it's pretty clear which horse the US was backing. That note was just the little nudge it took to find an excuse to go from covert proxy involvement via merchants to overt direct fielding of American soldiers.

Blaming it on treaties? Every one of the great powers could and did fail to honor treaties such as these whenever they decided it suited their purposes. Each government made a very self-centered calculation to see what was best for it, not its ally. A-H wanted to eliminate the emerging Serbian regional power. Russia wanted to prevent A-H from emerging as the dominant power of southeastern Europe. Germany backed A-H because Bismarck's successors had been unable to follow his advice about being one of three when you live in a world of five and feared diplomatic isolation. Revanchism in French politics had been so strong for so long that the opportunity to avenge the Siege of Paris was irresistibly appealing. Britain didn't care about either France or Russia but didn't want to lose the Belgian export market. (Apparently that's no longer something they're concerned with.) Italy sat out the first year of the war, then came in on the Entente side, because it saw A-H as being, if not as great an enemy as France (Francophonia having driven it to seek a specifically German alliance some years earlier), then enough of an enemy to be unworthy of a sacrifice of Italian blood on its behalf. Then the British bribed them with a secret treaty, and they turned their coats. Japan saw an opportunity to gain prestige by credibly claiming victory over a European colonial empire. Only America entered for the reasons stated here.

Tuchman's book explains this excellently.

You cant talk about WWI without first looking at the Balkan crisis of 1908-1909 and the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. This made Russia loss face and swear to never back down again. And then you have to look at the Morocco crisis of 1911. Germany was forced to back down, this embarrassed them as well. Making them swear to never back down again. The entire time frame from 1908 to 1914 was just a pressure cooker waiting to explode.

You talk about treaties being the cause but i disagree, it was the Serbian Ultranationalist dream for a Greater Serbia encompassing large areas of Croatia and Bosnia and the fact the Serbs assassinated Ferdinand knowing Russia would come to its aid if the Austro Hungarian Empire invaded them. To me it sounds like a conspiracy as the Austro Hungarian Empire had every right to protect itself, your comment that Ferdinand was not relevant is idiotic as the Assassination was a direct act of war on the Austro Hungarian Empire. Treaties made between countries are not unconditional, Serbia was the clear aggressor and Russia coming to its aid was the direct cause of world war 1 and ultimately leading to world war 2. What would have the British done if Scotland had ideas of a greater Scotland and assassinated the Queen so as to achieve its goals. If Russia had not intervened 3 THINGS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED; 1 - World War 1 2- World War 2 3 - Serbo Croatian war which occurred in the 90s. It’s that simple and your view is so biased and you really should stop making these crap.

You make the treaties sound secondary and like people didn't really know about them, when it was the treaties themselves that entangled Germany in the Allied trap. They needed to destroy Germany's superior industry and had to assemble a pre-text. That whole false flag assassination was a circus of failures, all day long. Also the Austria Hungry excuse for wanting a war is bogus on its face, any adult listening to that should know that. When you hear a reason that sounds like that, you are being lied to. Minor points; Canada, Australia, NZ, I believe SAfrica were dominions not colonies, but yes once uk declared war they were automatically at war too. It seems people miss the reason the Russians were so interested in Serbia. Russia went to war with the ottomans, defeated them twice, then GB, France allied & told them to give up the territories “brokered peace” by giving portions of those territories to a benign empire that wouldn’t radically upset the balance in Europe & threaten the suez canal. Also remember they sided against Russia in the Crimea, continuation of the Great Game. I has been mentioned that the Russian intelligence service, mentored, helped fund the Serbian intelligence service, if not help fund, to weaken the Hapsburg’s & shore up their stake as protectors of the pan slavs. Who with help(?) from Russia, fostered the black hand. The fact that Russia was able to mobilize dramatically more quickly than anticipated by both Austro-Hungarian let alone German intelligence due to their almost nonexistent transportation & logistical support, may kinda smacks of a “premonition” of hostilities.... hmmmm. But in end it was the British that went to war on principle vice overtly strategic self interest. The unintended consequences is the rest is history
@stefHin
3 жыл бұрын
Basically it all started with the crimean war of 1853. The russians assumed Austria would support their claims or at least stay neutral as they had helped them suppress the Hungarian revolution of 1848. But the Austrians did not help them - on the contrary, they even did not officially state if they would stay neutral and moved troops near the Russian border (they did not attack, but still forcing Russia to keep some troops stationed there against the unpredictable Austrians), so basically they messed up the Alliance with Russia completely. This explains why they had no problem with declaring war on Austria. Probably the whole situation was a bit more complex than that, it is just what I remember from history class in school.

I 100% disagree with this video. You incorrectly state that France declares war on Germany. Germany was the aggressor power there. It declared war on France. France at best was reluctant to join the war, but Germany's leaders became to bound to the idea of a double side war to see the folly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Imperial_War_Council_of_8_December_1912 Germany wanted that war in 1914. They wanted to fight the British and the French, and used the archduke assassination as a pretext for a war they had been planning for two years.

Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria's pint. Austria demands Serbia buy it a complete new suit because there are splashes on its trouser leg. Germany expresses its support for Austria's point of view. Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit. Serbia points out that it can't afford a whole suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria's trousers. Russia and Serbia look at Austria. Austria asks Serbia who it's looking at. Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone. Austria inquires as to whose army will assist Russia in compelling it to do so. Germany appeals to Britain that France has been looking at it, and that this is sufficiently out of order that Britain should not intervene. Britain replies that France can look at who it wants to, that Britain is looking at Germany too, and what is Germany going to do about it? Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia incapable of such action. Britain and France ask Germany whether it's looking at Belgium. Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone. Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium. France and Britain punch Germany. Austria punches Russia. Germany punches Britain and France with one hand and Russia with the other. Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over. Japan calls over from the other side of the room that it's on Britain's side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria. Australia punches Turkey, and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings because Britain made Australia do it. France gets thrown through a plate glass window, but gets back up and carries on fighting. Russia gets thrown through another one, gets knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change. Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs round the room chanting. America waits till Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a barstool, then pretends it won the fight all by itself. By now all the chairs are broken and the big mirror over the bar is shattered. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany's fault. While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends.
