Brief History:
The seat of power in the country was in the northern city of Angkor from 802 to the early 15th century.
In 1434, the capital first moved to Phnom Penh with the capital position in the country shifting from city to city over the next 400 years until its return.
In 1865, Cambodia's King Norodom relocated the Royal Court from Oudong to Phnom Penh with the establishment of the Royal Palace happening in 1866.
The Royal Palace has classic Khmer roofs and ornate gliding and once dominated the skyline of Phnom Penh.
It remained vacant during the reign of the Khmer Rouge but for a time after.
However, now it stands as a symbol of Khmer culture and fortitude for many enthusiastic tourists moving forward.
