@bettersteps
3 жыл бұрын
@ddk So, you're obviously not a watch person. A quality quartz is 100 time more accurate (not usable) than almost any automatic. But, it's just a quartz. Accuracy doesn't come into play here. An automatic has a different feel, a different vibe. That Timex has the vibe of an automatic. It's screaming to be an automatic. It's like the difference between driving a car with a transmission or a manual. The manual is more fun and you're part of the car. Not figuratively part of the car. You are literally part of the car when you drive a manual. When you wear an automatic you are part of the watch. YOU are giving it its power. Why is this watch an occasional wear piece? I would wear that watch all the time. It's beautiful. Unfortunately, it's not an automatic. A good Miyota 8000/9000 movement in that watch would make it 100x more desirable.
@GODSPEEDseven
3 жыл бұрын
@ddk Yes, exactly that. While my small collection is divided between Seiko /Citizen automatics and solar/quartz watches, I have no trouble seeing past modern cheap automatics for what they are; cheap, mass produced movements that are pretty unreliable for timekeeping. I totally disagree with that comment about manual vs automatic cars as well. I mean no insult to who said it, but it lacks experience. Unless you are getting a retro ferrari from the 60's or 70's, most modern manual cars are antiquated systems sold as the most economical means of transportation. Why is ot so hard to find serious sports cars with manual transmissions now? I really find that whole sports car analogy a little overused and misunderstood. There is NOTHING special of some cheap automatic movement, whether it's a Miyota, Seiko, Eta, etc.. these are all made and assembled in production lines that lack any charm or craftsmanship.
@bettersteps
3 жыл бұрын
@ddk Never said anything about sophistication, or high-horology. Never said anything was wrong with it either. And don't talk to me about being built to the nearest penny. If anything is built as cheap as possible it's a quartz movement. Remember when I said that it's obvious you're not a watch guy? It's very obvious.
@bettersteps
3 жыл бұрын
@@GODSPEEDseven How does my comment lack experience? That doesn't even make sense. People use the watch/car analogy because it's spot on. I know a modern dual-clutch transmission is now faster than a stick. And, being retro or a sports car has nothing to do with it. I still buy manual. Many people still prefer a manual. They're fun. There is nothing special about a cheap quartz movement made on on an assembly line and they ALL lack charm or craftsmanship. But, when a Miyota needs work a horologist takes it apart, fixes it and puts it back together. Most quartz movements are simply removed and replaced.

I have to be honest... maybe it's because I'm a 70s baby myself, but that watch is beautiful. The color the band the dial the whole look... it just works! Jodi says he might wear it with his niche 70s clothes but I'm seeing it on wrist with a nice black suit at a fancy dinner party or perhaps a wedding reception. It would look sharp! On to the second topic.. birth year watch... it's a great thing imo... not the gimmick people are claiming. Why? Well because it speaks to you, or maybe about you... it states the style, the technology, and the priorities/mentalities of the year you were born. Were you born in a digital tech age? Were you a war Era baby? The watch from your year will say so. AND there is a really nice feeling looking down at a mechanical item on your wrist and knowing that it has been experiencing, counting, and working through every second, minute, hour, day, and year that you have.... and you're both still here chugging along doing your jobs every day going into the future.

As soon as I got mine (which reminds me of an early '70s Timex Electric my father bought me as a child) I swapped out the strap, and then was lucky enough to find a gold-tone "TIMEX" signed buckle at my local Seiko AD, where I also purchased a nice black strap with forest green stitching that ideally suits the kitschiness of this piece. Now, along with a more subdued 1978 reissue (the 37.5-mm one, now re-strapped with a pale green rally found on AliExpress) I wear it way too much, considering all the nicer watches in my collection being ignored. So far I've purchased six of these Timex re-issues (including the original '79 Pepsi diver, the Falcon Eye, and two 34-mm hand-wound Marlins, one with a champagne dial and a black one with California indices), but importantly I've bought all (but one) in unworn condition with stickers and tags still on, plus the lovely boxes included (where most of Timex' investment seems to have gone), for ridiculously low used prices (wayyy less than half price). The Falcon Eye is my favourite, thanks to the soft gold tones and that brilliant blue wavy dial, and I was even lucky enough to find a like-new vintage replacement bracelet that perfectly matches the unique gold tone and doesn't pull wrist hairs. Anyway, love your coverage of these Timex re-issue pieces (et al), totally agree with your assessments (especially pricing and the need for a mechanical movement - even a Sea-Gull would be fine). I have an original automatic one, you can pick them up for £15 on eBay. Loose about 2 minutes a day but it’s sentimental as I wore it as a teenager.

Hahahahahah! I did not know that birth year watches were a thing before I bought mine… well. I just bought mine, which is the Tissot PRX 35 (emerald) green dial. So perfect for my wrist #MTB. And, I’m soooo happy about it ❤ Perfect justification to buy “Just One More Watch” 😆 … I’m here because I’m interested with this 1975 vintage designed watch. I came across it while checking out the Timex Q, which was born in 1978-1979. I noticed that I’ve been into vintage watches lately 😊No further explanations needed if you knew when the Tissot PRX design was born 😂 But then, from the video I learned what birth year watches actually mean. Thanks!

Glycine Airman "Noon" re-issue - 1953. I was shocked to see how few 65+ viewers there are. Wristwatches were our thing - when they weren't "retro.". Frankly, I was delighted to find the world of watches so alive and vital - so many choices, so little time!

I like my watches to have personal connections to me, and in that spirit I doubled down on the birth year idea for my collection: one dress and one casual.

Although I don´t like gold tone stuff I must say that this 70ties looking Timex features the best looking double domed sapphire crystal I saw yet. Great show mate !

It reminds me a LOT of an old 1976 Omega Megaquartz I used to own. I'm not sayings is a copy of anything just really similar 70s inspirations. I am also a glorious 1975 vintage.

I do plan on picking up a Datejust from 1982, but that acquisition is several years over the horizon.

I'm ambivalent about the birth year watch, but I recently bought a working original Timex Sprite. Proudly made in Dundee and my first watch; a birthday present back in 1975 and immediately scuffed in a tripping incident during a typically rough game of British Bulldog.

Add a gold Spiedel stretchy bracelet for full 1975 grandpa watch look! I have a few 60's vintage Timex I still wear on occasion. The price of the reissue in a little much.

Fast forward two years, and I own the Timex Q '78 (my birth year 🧓🧓), which is almost this same watch but in silver and with slightly different hands and hour markers.

That's why I picked up the Steele Dive Willard. Would have preferred it more if it were a Seiko though well it least the movement is a Seiko

I like birthday watches. Always wanted to have the Oris 1965, but that is out of my budget. So I was happy to find the Steeldive homage SD1965 :-)

I hadn't thought of getting a watch from my birth year.1965. I do have coins from that year though. But just one more watch will be coming my way!

Birth watches are a cool idea and I definitely understand the reasoning behind buying one, question is, can you find a watch you like, that you will actually wear?

The original might be worth having but not so sure about this. If you miss the day/date out it looks like a Timex I found whilst clearing a house recently. A couple of hours with "Autosol" and the acrylic is like new, and a few drops of moebius 9010 where the jewels should really be, still not a great watch but interesting. I'm searching high and low for a "Birth Year" sundial.

I was born in 1996 and am a lifelong James Bond fan so I think a 1996 Brosnan area Omega SMP is the only fitting birth year watch for me and I will definitely own one!
