There is a video showing a modification that adds a couple of springs to the tail gate gas struts, the springs apply just enough assist to open the top tail gate without touching, useful if you a two arms full of shopping

I have the exact same year and model 3.0i. I have the same issue with the rear latch on the tailgate. It only does that when I press the inside button but from the fob it doesn’t. It can be a money pit but doing repairs yourself is worth it. That oil leak is most likely the oil filter housing gasket, had the same issue and I replaced the gasket and no leaks. Also did the valve cover gasket

Great video! I have the 2005 4.4i that I got a week ago with 130,000 for $3,000. The only issue it has is a little oil leak. Everything else is working great! I’m obsessed with the X5. Keep up with your videos.

I love how these look. I remember driving one years ago. 3.0 with the 5 speed auto. Really loved how solid it felt, and the steering felt really nice. Such a cool car. Constantly on the lookout for a 5/6 speed manual car, just because that would be REALLY cool.

I have a manual 3.0i X5 and I would love it to be auto... driving it in a Spanish city full of traffic in the road is horrible but at least the car is quite comfortable. The one thing I really miss from my previous and much smaller car is the wind noise while driving fast.

If your license plate bulb was swapped for an LED it can trip an error because the resistance of the bulb isn't the same as a standard incandescent filament. If you pay super close attention on startup you may see the LED bulb flicker upon key cycle, while the car is essentially testing the bulbs.

I got myself a 2008 Lexus IS250 as an extra car. Not sure if I can classify it as a beater because I don’t drive it as a daily or often. My main daily car is a 2018 Toyota Corolla. Something about older luxury cars have some sort of allure and appeal to me. It’s like they’re part of a timeless classic era. I like your X5. Those are beautiful SUV’s.

Door handle carriers tend to fail. These are lift up handles, not pull out so I think this is why they break when people pull out on them. Airbag sensor in passenger seat fails….is a recall for some of these but also a cheap bypass available on eBay…works flawlessly. CCV system can fail up here in the north. Condensation builds up causing a mayonnaise type sludge. If driven highway or longer distance, not an issue. If around town, big issue. Mine froze, detonated the engine at 75k and had to be replaced….again, only an issue in cold climates and short drives. Yaw sensor, steering angle sensor, all these WILL fail. Pain in the ass to fix. I’ve got a love/hate with my late model 2006. Love the car, love the style and all the things you love about yours but the repairs are $$$$. Some things I have repaired myself but others make me want to sell it sometimes….until I drive it again….ugh!

Regarding the tail lights. The warning lamp in dash occasionally came on and the driver side break light would go out. I pulled out the small green holder for the bulb, pulled out the bulb ( that was ok) then looked closely at the small blub holder. One of the small metal clips inside had a slight bit of rust. So I simply scraped the rust off gently with a screwdriver, reinserted the bulb, then gently pushed the holder back into place. It has been working perfectly ever since! One note, is that you need to turn off the ignition with key, and then turn it back on, and this will reset the warning light on the dash so that it remains unlit.

I have the same model with the same engine. I had the 'clunk' noise when going from D ot R as well and especially when accelerating slightly harder. After I had the transfer changed for a younger one I bought online for € 350,- it was all smoothness. Whole job cost me € 700,- parts and labor and is definitely worth considering.

Hey James, love the e53 beater! I have one too with165,000 miles. I was wondering if you ever replaced the transmission fluid on yours. Would you recommend it?
@JamesPlaysWithCars
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lance! That's awesome, would love to see videos of your X5 if you plan to make any. My transmission fluid was replaced at 105k, which is 19k / 2 yr ago. The transmission is still super smooth and shifts as responsively as it is meant to, and I suspect that's in part because of the fluid. I'd recommend a fluid change if you want to keep the car for a while!
