Galvanic corrosion is the cause of many metal devices on our homes to become trashed over time. When it comes to joist hangers on a treated lumber deck, it is the copper in the treated lumber that is in contact with the joist hangers and other metal brackets that can lead to this destruction.
This corrosion needs essentially 3 things in order to activate. Dissimilar metals touching, electrolytes, and water. In this scenario you have the steel joist hangers that were once zinc coated (hot dipped galvanized) and the copper from the pressure treated lumber. The other 2 things are commonly from salt used to melt ice on the deck which then melts and runs across the brackets below the deck surface.
This issue can also be seen extensively on homes that are near the sea, where sea breeze can blow salt water from the ocean at your home hitting all metal surfaces, increasing the likely hood of this corrosive force.
