I gagged when I saw "The Formalist Critic". Sends shivers down my spine.

These are EXCELLENT strategies that helps a lot with understanding the main idea of the passage. My accuracy has shot up a ton by using this, I just need to get the timing under 10 minutes and not 30-40 minutes haha. Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you so much John for making this video. Super helpful. It has been over 3 months that I have been consistently practicing with at least 2 CARS passages per day and unfortunately have negligebly improved :( I like your method and would like to see how can I gather these info in 4 minutes or so. I think my biggest challenge is that I spend about 6 minutes per passage just to get the main points. Time and understanding are a struggle for me.

Mariam, I'm so glad you found it useful! I'm proud of you for pushing so hard and I know that you're going to be successful bc you're being so patient and hardworking! Yes, I agree that most initial responses to the strategies we're posting (this one, House Method, Flowchart method, etc.) are generally, "I see how this could work but it takes too long" and it absolutely does.... at first! When we taught students in our program we usually gave them drills to practice to help them get faster at these methods. We're going to make videos explaining those drills at later dates, but since you've already been studying 3 months, I'll try to explain the 4-corners method drill here for you :) . When you do your 2 CARS passages per day, I want you to start writing down the 4-corners and timing how long it takes you to get all 4 of them accurately. At the beginning, you'll be looking back in the passage a lot and it'll probably take you around 10-15 minutes (some ppl it takes 6, some ppl like myself it took 15+ at the beginning). Record how long it takes you to read the passage and fill out the chart. For the next passage, just try to beat your previous time by 5 seconds but MAKING SURE you maintain 100% understanding of the passage. You do that for a week and you're already down over a minute!! You'll have set backs and disappointments, but what you need right now is GOALS for when you're practicing. That's the point of all these strategies, to give you gals and guys goals while you study/practice so that when you take the real test, it's just engrained in the way you think :) Please lmk if this helps and if I can explain any of that any better! Protip: make a spreadsheet for those times. Spreadsheets are for doctors too, not just accountants ;)

@@InformingFutureDoctors Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply. I will try your approach and am looking forward to see how it works for me. At times, failures look more pronounced than small advances. I'm sure at some point anyone who consistently tries, should find a way to get over the hump. I am very grateful to your channel and am sure so many will benefit.

@@InformingFutureDoctors This is really helpful! I started out following this exactly for the 4 corners method and then recently switched to the House Method. My question might sound super simple but I am timing myself for how long I read and how long it takes me to fill in my chart. But I am having trouble figuring out if I getting them accurately. I have been doing 5 daily JW passages. I know my main idea is accurate from checking the solution (they give a simple main idea) but I am consistently missing 1-3 questions that seem more related to arguments. Is there a way to figure out the arguments from the passage (I know they are the examples that support the main idea but something is missing). lol I even draw horizontal columns when I practicing so I can focus on which argument is important. Thanks for your channel and everything!

Thank you so much for such a great video! I was getting extremely low scores before. I watched your video and tried to read the passage with what you talked about in mind and felt that I could draw out the main idea and arguments much easier than before. You're the best!

Hi John, this method has aided my understanding of the CARS passages significantly! I have been doing this method for a few days and have been keeping note of how long it takes. Of course, I’m nowhere near the 8-10 minutes per passage that I would like, but right now I’m focused on accuracy as this is something I have been struggling with. I have been getting 70-100% on my passages for the past few days. I think as I continue to get better and better at this method, my time will decrease. Thank you for this advice. I wish you were in my state. I would book a tutoring appointment stat! This has been so helpful.

Dallis, I'm so stoked it's helping!! Because the MCAT is timed, students often focus on getting fast before they get accurate and that's backwards. It takes a little longer to do it right but the result is better. I'm glad you're already seeing progress, keep killing it!
