Gave a video like. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Chris. I use the term oddball, created a video of why I prefer to use it. As far as the term junk wax era being used, I prefer to use boom era when describing a group of cards from different years from 86 to 93. As a collector who began collecting during that time. I think of the boom era as more endearing than when I hear junk wax era. I don't personally find the term "junk wax" endearing and I know many other collectors feel the same. I wouldn't keep or collect junk in my house, I would throw junk out. Boom era better describes mass produced or over produced era, so I prefer to use that. I think the term junk era is more used to describe that era as generally having no value, and as a collector, I couldn't care less about the perceived value. Boom era fits my collecting vocabulary better personally, as it describes the mass quantity of cards produced vs the perceived monetary value.

Well said, my friend! I agree with you on all points. Oddball and Junk Wax are terms of endearment, and I love both of those types of cards. As far back as I remember, Vintage was 80 and earlier. That will hopefully never change. I look at it as prewar and postwar vintage. Also, modern or post Junk Wax and Ultramodern. I don't know when Modern becomes Ultramodern, though! Great video!

There’s already a better name for oddball cards. They are called cards! 😂

Vintage is 1985 and back. Junk wax is 1987-1994. 1986 is the transition year. The strike led to a market correction in 1995.

Chris, I have been an “Oddball” all my life! Many people who are not in love with the idea of collecting pictures of baseball players might think of all of us collectors as “Oddballs!”

For me the "vintage" cutoff is the 1980 RIckey rookie, and that is the only 1980s card I have aside from Johnny Bench's final cards and a few throwback cards of pre-war stars. I sold my other 1980s and junk wax cards long ago in a life-changing shift to vintage. If it weren't for Rickey, i would draw the line at 1979.

Oddball cards never really bothered me, but for some reason I never like the junk wax reference. I tend to call that era the mass produced era, that being said I do use the term when I am explaining that era of cards to people who are less familiar with the hobby. I also agree that vintage is 1980 and back for the same reason you do. Once multiple manufacturers came out in 1981, I considered it all new.

Fun discussion Chris! When I started collecting, 1967 was ultra-modern, we just called it new cards. Took a few months before I realized they made cards before 1967. We just called them old cards. IMO, junk wax is the cushion between vintage and modern. I will be curious what the 1990's & 2000 are called in a few years.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Chris. Well said. I understand vuew points on all sides. I dont prefer the term junk wax. But to each their own. Call it what you like. How about we all just call the cards / eras what we want and move on. There are enough bigger prblems in this world than what verbage to use about cardboard with people on them Thanks gor sharing

What about the years between vintage and junk wax? What do we call them? I don’t mind labels but I think the categories need to be solidified. Some people say vintage is 77 and before and there’s a ton of different opinions of when junk wax started. I guess we could just refer to all cards as what they are ex: 86 Topps and just let people categorize them in their own minds 🤷🏻♂️

If Mang-EGO says that we should not use the term oddball, we shouldn't use it. He also said that we shouldn't use the term grail cards as well. Don't you know that he is the leader of vintage collecting?

I agree with you on both. "Oddball" just means the cards weren't from a mainstream company, and "junk wax" is called that because so many cards were produced during that time period.

Boom Era is my more favorable term for the "junk wax" era of the mid-80's through mid 90's. The hobby was never more popular than it was then, and it is was still cheap to collect unlike now with the modern garbage.

The cardss should be what is endearing. Not whatever term someone wants to put on them. As I mentioned before. Call them what you like! To me it's about the cards. Thanks again

How was 1938 Goudey not mainstream? It sure was in 1938. What other cards could you buy that year? Topps didn’t even exist yet.
