Delphi / Lucas are the preferred option. OE spec. the filter efficency, capacity and overall performance will be far superior to the others. The unique way they are glued ensures no internal leakage. Seen some independent ISO4020 test that prove this so where. Will dig the link out and share if i can find it. Cheers for the vids!

fully agree on Mahle after what I saw - and imagine that the internal rubber seals of Britpart, Delphi and Coopers would not be good, than there would not be any filtering - did not expect one of four to be logically that different - man you do strong stuff ! Applause ! Cheers Axel

When you say that you have never had problems with Britpart filters, how do you know? Unless you do a laboratory analysis of the fuel / oil passing through you won't know how effective they are at removing micro-particles. There could be a lot of unseen engine wear you know nothing about, at least for the moment. My advice is to buy the best filters you can and change regularly. The Britpart filter which Mike cut open looked horrible inside.

Really interesting and enjoyable Video! I've been told the the paper in filters is known as filter media, Malhe make quality stuff. Always find in interesting how some filters cross over into different applications, these fuel filters are also used on older International 85 series tractors that also have bosch injection systems.. I remember when almost every fuel filter was a lucas 296 or 796 filter they fitted pretty much everything !! Not sure what oil filters are on later defenders but I remember older Land rovers used coopers z7 oil filters that where also used on some Ford and massey tractors.

It would seem that the fuel would mostly run parallel to the filter paper in the 3 wound types, not through the paper totally. Whereas with the Mahle the fuel has to pass through the paper to get to the outlet tube.

IMO if you are travelling in countries where you might encounter dodgy fuel (as I did in Hungary in a motorway service area) you need a full pre-filter, not just a sedimenter. And yes it should have a transparent bowl so you can see any crud and water. If the pre-filter is mounted in the wheel arch (as opposed to inside the chassis rail as on an early Disco) the bowl should be made of a high impact material rather than glass to guard against the possibility of being shattered by a flying stone. You can buy pre-filters which use the same filter element as the main filter which is handy. For ultimate protection fit a water-in-fuel alarm too. If I had done this a few years ago I would have saved myself a major repair to my diesel injection system :-( If anyone is interested to see how to fit pre-filter there's a video on my channel under title of "Contaminated fuel".
@JeremyMAGNE

Also the Malhe one would not pickup water nearly as quickly as the others. Water and debri falls to to the bottom. With the other design the diesel needs to pass close to the water collected and may suck some water with it when going back up.

The Delphi filter will work cos each layer is sealed top & bottom, alternately, which means the fuel is forced to zig-zag through each layer of paper as it works it's way toward the centre - although it still has the problem with a small surface area at the top. The other two are garbage.

Nooooooo. Only use Mahle or genuine. The problems we get with crap filters is a weekly thing on td5 and pumas. In theory, a less restrictive filter to flow with more surface area for filtering is always going to be better for the td5 pump and the pressure it operates at. We find fleetguard puma filters very good as a aftermarket one.
