A bit over 30 years ago, I took my first trip overseas. Two weeks in Italy. Domestically, I often raveled in my car with a trunk full of 35mm and medium format film gear, but I decided to travel light for two reasons. One, this was an academic tour with my wife (who was having to write a paper for grad school) and I did not want to see everything through a viewfinder. Second, I had no idea what the “situation” would be, so I wanted to cut my losses. I took a used slr and a used 28-85mm lens in which I had a total investment of $100! And lots of film (had to buy more in Rome.). I got all the pictures I needed. Years later, on a trip to Germany, I was much more comfortable carrying around gear and I took a backpack twice the size of the one you show, full of gear. My photos were no better than the ones in Italy. Bottom line: vacation coming up next month. I will have a photo camera, and a video camera. In fact, I will have two devices that can do both! An iPhone and the lightest of my stable of micro-4/3s bodies and one lens! I’ll be fine. It’s a vacation. BTW, I also pack smaller bags in my suitcase and take a backpack on the plane. Great minds think alike! Good video! Cheers. 🙂

Great and informative video David... thanks for the appreciation at the end too.. that was cool! As for myself, my travel kit that I find very suitable coming back from Taiwan was S24Ultra, Pocket 3 and Action 4 plus DJI Mic2. I use the S24Ultra for photos with immediate edits and sharing if need to. Then Pocket 3 most of the time with the Mic2 connected via bluetooth. Then when it rained (which was a few times in Taipei), I switched to the Action 4 but still connected to Mic2 via bluetooth. Surprisingly I was the only one left filming when the rain started pouring and with great audio too. Love that everything including mounts, powerbank and handle all fit into a tiny sling bag which is great for travel with kids.

My family and I started a full-time travel journey 8 month ago. I started with a full case of gear. C70, R7, 2 Lenses, External Monitor, Shotgun and DJI Mic and so on. After 4 month I bought the Fuji X100VI and used it way more than all the other stuff. Thats why I'm selling everything right now to build my new "uktimate-travel-kit". A7cii + 20-70 f4 + 85 f1.8, Fuji X100VI, DJI Action 4, DJI Mic and everything should fit in the nomatic PM sling bag. Let's see how it will go. 😅

I went to the DR a few weeks ago with my family and I definitely over packed. I took my big camera as well as my Insta360 X3... and I never used the X3. I wanted to go scuba diving, but didn't find the chance to break away, but I did use my R5 and 70-200mm lens a couple times looking for wildlife around the resort. I wish I had used the X3 more and next time I will leave the big camera at home, probably. Wish I had taken the drone and talked to the resort management because they had a "no drone" policy, but I feel like if I had talked to them I might have been able to work something out.

I mainly bought my gear for trips, so it comes with me, as well. I don't bring every lens on every trip, though. If I am just shooting people, I will bring along a Sony A7R3, Tamron 17-28, 28-75, and either a 35mm f1.8 or an 85mm (maybe both). If I am going to the mountains, I like to bring a 100-400mm, but thats a lot of weight, so I have to have a real reason to bring it along. If I want to go super light with one lens, the 35mm on the Sony isn't much weight.

Love the video- I fought the same urges and landed a little differently. I've tried going minimalist, taking one whole family trip with nothing but a phone and gopro and found myself wanting more. So, I bring the (semi) big guy in the Canon R6 ii with a great all-day walk around 24-105 f4 lens (plus a pancake 1.8 50mm which takes up very little additional space). I'll also bring a fast ultra-wide Rokinon 16mm for astro pics/timelapses. GoPro 10 and 11 and suction cup mount to put on the car for fun action. Various mounts, mini tripods, batteries, etc. all fit in the smallish slingbag that becomes my carry-on for the plane. But instead of realizing I'm bringing too much gear for the whole trip, I'll choose what gear based on the day. Gonna do a great active hiking or water day? Leave the slingbag and big guy in the hotel- shoot with the GoPro for hands free or iPhone; everything fits in your pants pockets. Touring Rome's ancient ruins or picturesque countryside of Tuscany? Bring the big guy for the day. I've tried to go minimalist only to have too many scenes where I wished I had the "real" camera to bring back the epic shot. Also- I think the beautiful shot of mom and child on the beach with your big guy is a far superior shot to the snaps with the 35mm on your beach day. As a pro, you've probably got a zillion such stunning shots- as a regular shmo who only gets to do this a couple times a year, the opportunities are too limited to not make the most of it every time! Thanks for your work- I've learned a ton from you over the years, David!

I shoot a lot of film and like to document vacations with GoPro’s. Cameras brought are all based on (airplane vs driving) and the photos I want captured. If I already have a particular image in my mind which would look great on a 4x5 film, that camera comes. Now that my kids are older, I realize I really only need a few captures from every vacation to remind us of the time together. So a 35mm with a 50mm lens or a sx70 Polaroid with several film packs is all I take. We learn to make do with what he have on hand, enjoy the moments because time is not something we get back.

It's a tough call on the Pocket 3 when traveling with the kids because while it's an insanely good camera, an action camera is so much easier to shoot and then just jam into a backpack pocket without worrying about putting it back in the case and being careful not to break the gimbal head. I might bring it on the next few adventures and see how I do with it👍

Until last year, I carried either 2 slrs or 2 dslrs plus half a dozen lenses on trips until I just got tired of it and only used cameras for paid work and stopped carrying cameras at all for anything else. Last year, I bought myself the Nikon Zf for Christmas, and used it on trips in the US to NYC, Ann Arbor, San Diego and Hawaii (with the 24-70 f4). I also had a Shift/Tilt lens and an Irix 15mm that I bought to bring back as working lenses, and used them a little bit (in NYC). I also got a Heipi 3 in 1 travel tripod, and I really like it as a travel tripod. Since returning to Thailand in January, I've bought the 24-120 f4S, the 14-30 f4S and the 100 - 400. The Zf, 24-120 and 14-30 all fit inside my K&F sling bag (and the 100-400 can be slung in a pouch at my side). I've made trips to Kuala Lumpur and the Philippines as well as a few places in Thailand with this set up and found it really effective and easy to work with. I have a Shimoda 30L bag which I use to carry the camera gear and batteries on flights, the sling bag gets used for my flight gear (ear plugs, etc.) so it's mostly empty, but it makes it easy to go through security. I also have the ThinkTank Airport Advantage. I pack so that I can check the Think Tank if I have to, but it fits in any airline locker (up top), even the real small ones, and I carry the electronic "must carry on" (laptop, batteries, camera, lenses) in the Shimoda which is packed so it will fit under my seat if I can take both onboard. I use Peak Design Packing Cubes to compress my clothes and so I can easily switch from one bag to another. I use the drinking bottle/tripod support from the Shimoda bag for slinging the 100-400 if I need it for what I'm doing that day, so unless I am going out on a trek, I just use the sling bag and that pouch slung to carry my camera gear (also the tripod slung). If I am going on a trek where I need to carry water, snacks, rain jacket, etc, then I just pack the Shimoda. Did that on Corregidor and will probably also do that sometimes in Greece later this year. I don't shoot photos and videos at the same time, so I don't need to carry two cameras. The Nikon Zf is more than capable of producing whichever that I need to do when I need to do it (video or photo). If it was paid work, I'd be worried about a backup body, but as it isn't? Not worried about that. It is a LOT easier to maintain enthusiasm about photography without a big kit. Also easier to deal with airlines and airports and to keep track of your gear. Btw, for those interested, my working cameras (Nikon D750s, D780, D600) and lenses pack into multiple Pelican cases, ALWAYS cost me oversize and overweight charges - but for paying work? That is the way to travel (lighting gear in similar cases). TSA will cut the locks off those sometimes but I've never had anything disappear.

My bag with all the extra stuff like batteries, memory cards, a small flash and a few other things weighed it right at 10 LBS. Turns out that was a lot for this 63 year old. I took nearly a 1000 pics and probably around 95% were with the 24-105. So on my next trip I'm wondering if I should even bother with the 2 Sigma lenses. I'll probably still take the 14-24 F2.8 as it's so good for cathedral interiors. That would seriously lighten my load if I only took the A7RIII with the 24-105. On the rare occasion I do video, I just put my iPhone on the DJI gimbal and use that. Works well enough for me.

I'm planning a trip to Iceland for November. Got the a74 packed with the three Sony lenses you mentioned in this video + Sony G 20mm F1.8 for night shots and a DJI mini 3. A lot of stuff, but I do expect to use it. Going to use your idea of packing a camera cube in my luggage, so I can use that to store lenses that I won't need on every excursion, instead of walking with a heavy ass backpack every day.

I use the wandrd 6L sling with 1 80D body with a 24mm pancake, a nifty fifty, a 35 f2, and a 85 1.8. For being a fairly large body, I was surprised the 6L sling fit everything!

I'm totally with you and I think the key with kids (and dogs) is to keep it small and simple and durable. That's something I didn't really mention, but I also need gear that when a kid needs something on a moment's notice I don't mind putting my cameras on the ground or shoving them into a bag quickly. No time for lens caps or covers🤣

I used ACE Pro 99% of the time for photo and video during the Disney trip. Plus I can take the ACE Pro in to the pool and the ocean and had no issue of my kids taking it into the ocean and the pool. X100VI was used maybe handful of times for photos.

To be fair, those Sony zoom pics were bangers! How about an Fuji XT-5 (or even X-S20)? That way, you could have the small camera, yet have the 55-200mm for the zoom shots. It's a pretty small lens and fantastic quality.

I thought you made a whole video about how your daily was going to be the A7Cii. Reasonably sized lens on that feels like a great travel option. All with the same sensor as the A7IV.

It's so good, but still significantly larger than the X100VI. On family trips, I'm really trying to focus much more on photography, and while the A7Cii would be my preferred camera, the size and ease of the X100vi make it ideal for travel

Surprised not to see the pocket 3 in there. That's what's making me consider not taking my two A7iv's out with us. However when we are on holiday is the only time I get to film stuff so I enjoy getting to use my big gear. So unlike you I don't use my big cameras all the time. Watched to the end I liked the extra thank you there.

Thanks for watching till the end🙌 We just got back from our Cincinnati trip and I did bring the Pocket 3 with me for that. It's tough, because there's a certain fragility to the Pocket 3 that I don't experience with the Ace Pro or Action 4. With an action camera, I can film something and then just jam it into the side pocket on my backpack real quick with no worries. The Pocket 3 is definitely a higher quality, but a bit slower and more thoughtful of a camera to use so I don't break it

Could barely open/close it with my 16 inch MacBook Pro in it - as well as I couldn’t even fit the canon R5 with a 24-70, 70-200 and a Prfoto A1 light all within that camera cube. Sucks man. Thing was such a beautifully designed bag and I was so hyped for it but had to send it back.

I used my GoPro Hero 10 black and my Insta X4 and phones for the majority of our stay. But I brought several mounts and accessories that I never used. My travel gear is just all of my regular gear (Canon R6II, 24-240, 800 F/11, 85 F/2, 16 F/2.8). My main goal is to make nice photos (i dont have to worry about kids or anything, luckily) and in the end, the 24-240 can do basically everything and i might just not use the other lenses, but if i have time to swap around and it makes sense, i still got all the options with me. At least the lenses are overally pretty light and without any other action cams etc the total weight is around 7kg, which is still a little bit on the heavy side, but definitely manageable.

Nope I am just like you lol I have a daughter whom I am just all in on.all hands on deck when it’s vacation time. I almost feel drained but having a ton of fun all at the same time. I love it, I actually try to do the same idea by using my other bags as bag to put into another bag lol. For example I have a alpaka bravo tote bag that I can store my alpaka tech pouch in there which doubles as my edc bag airport bag if I want it to be. I wanted to purchase another alpaka bag to add to it but eh. I typically bring my Ricoh gr iii, iPhone /insta 360 go 3 for videos, and a paper shoot camper for those situstions you would feel feel shooting with a big camera.the paper shoot acts as a filler camera for a lot of candid moments inside stores or heavily public places

I go with my big camera, but only 1 lens (well… maybe 1 or 2 more 😅). The main lens it’s the tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. I know it’s a “heavy lens, but it’s only 1 for allmost everything. The other 1 or 2 lens, are an ultra wide angle and a tiny 35 f1.8 (for little walks and being ligther). And, for some videos, I use the dji pocket 3. Thats all my gear for a trip 😉 oh, and of course, a ligth tripod of carbon from vanguard (i don’t remember the model)

I have a Canon R6 II and when I travel I only like brining 2 pancake lenses bc it keeps the camera profile very compact. I decided to purchase those 2 pancake lenses instead of buying a compact camera so that I can only carry one amazing camera with a compact lenses. I use the 28 and 16mm prime lenses by canon and those are tiny. Additionally, I use the insta360 X4 and the go 3s and the DJI Cosmo Pocket 3 bc it's compact and outputs amazing video qualify in low lighting. I purchased my insta360 cameras directly thought insta360's website bc I noticed that they don't charge sales tax on any of their orders even though I live in a high tax City (Chicago), same with DJI. I purchased the osmo Pocket 3 and mini 4 pro drone trough their website. Both don't charge sales tax and both offer free shipping on orders over a certain amount.

Hi David. I’m over in Florida for three weeks and I went totally minimal. Made such a difference to bag weight etc and tbh, it is working really well for me. Action 4 in a mini protective camera case. Filters 3 batteries in a charge case Mini Ulanzi tripod with quick release. The Ace bendy tripod Dji Mic 2 Diving case and handle. That’s it. When we’re out, before we go, I just clip on the mic and pick up the camera and maybe the mini tripod/grip. Least used item …. The Ace Pro bendy tripod. Too busy having a holiday to worry about bendy tripods! I’m shootings 4K in 4:3 for extra pixels and then when I get home, I’ll worry about framing etc then! It has made shooting the holiday dead easy and a real pleasure. You just adapt to the lens you have. I don’t look at it as a photographer; more like just capture moments with no worries and get the best that I can out of it later. I don’t want to spend my time worrying about settings etc.

Oh …. I forgot. I also brought the neck mount for those times we’re in malls/crowded places with remote control. Allows for fantastic pov with no odd looks from others. Used it in Miami yesterday and it worked out so well. I must admit though, it is SO tempting to bring the kitchen sink. I made a conscious decision this time to just cut everything out to see what I could get out of a single little point and shoot/action cam. One thing I could have used sometimes ….. a longer lens. (For wild life) It’s really wild out here and we got surrounded by a large family of manatees. Then I wanted a longer lens for face shots of them!
