No you're right, it is totally crazy how normalised plastic surgery is. And the discourse around it is borked because people are so unwilling to examine their own choices. To say "I do it for myself/it's my body my choice" like we all live in individual vacuums is hugely disingenuous. I have been subject to it and found myself researching undereye fillers. The idea that my undereyes would look better a different way is totally subjective and it *came from somewhere*. Incidentally I ruled it out because of the cost! I was shocked at how much money people are sinking into beauty procedures. There'll be a thread on BCG of people hating on this podcast because you're judging women for their choices by not viewing societal trends totally uncritically again BEN.
@erinshier8089
3 жыл бұрын
totally agree.. i hate it when people say “it makes me feel confident!” like achieving confidence at any cost should be the goal. sure, maybe you are gaining some confidence but the reason you’re gaining confidence is because you’re conforming to beauty standards, not because changing your nose a few mm or having boobs a few sizes different can inherently make you feel better. if you lived on a desert island would your nose size matter? no? then you aren’t doing it only for yourself. also the effects of people in your life seeing you change your nose will make others question their noses, etc, so you are perpetuating these beauty standards which can harm other women/people edit: also it just perpetuates the idea that your confidence should come from your looks and your looks are inherently important to who you are
@scintilliance5665
3 жыл бұрын
a really good point. all these fillers and surgeries just perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards and that leads to several young women and men inherently growing up with insecurities and a desire to change themselves. gonna nerd it out a bit: there's a Marxist concept called interpellation which essentially means that the decisions we seem to think are made by us are actually made by societal constructs that have been embedded into our psyche.

I do think health related plastic surgery is obviously important (breast reduction, weight reduction, reworking inside the nose, etc). I'm kind of for plastic surgery in some cases, but I think it's way to normalized. It should be destigmatized, but not normalized if you know what I mean.
@sudesezin
3 жыл бұрын
well, i am gonna disagree. Maybe i will be a little biased because of my own plans but i think blaming individuals for confirming to the beauty standards is kinda wrong. i get that individuals are the ones to create the society and the standards but to me it is more influencers and advertisements. growing up before social media was this prevalent i had people around me that had both perfect noses and also ones with conventionally not so pretty noses. even though i always had the worst nose i never realized it until social media became what it is today. this was when both i started realizing how ugly my nose was and also people started pointing it out. now i want to get nose job but also growing up i have seen especially my mom constantly making fun of people’s plastic surgery. and now i feel like i can’t win both ways. if i don’t get a surgery how will i ever feel confident when i never saw someone with my nose being called “pretty”, never someone like me being listed in the top ten hottest lists of tabloids? i have constantly called i should put my glasses back on cause i looked better with them (covering my nose’s bridge). i have heard highscool friends talking about another friend and how he would actually be very handsome if he had a good nose or how she is not even that beautiful did you see her nose kind of stuff. i feel like blaming me or individuals who were unhappy that mask mandates ended because now we can’t cover our nose for getting surgeries is unfair. if we get surgery we are at fault for contributing to beauty standards or we are fake and all that stuff . i think solution to these should not be with blaming individuals who get these surgeries to fell more confident but celebrities who enforces these, movies who never have even slightly flawed actresses, advertisements saying this is the way for fulfillment, fashion shows which even while including plus size models still picking ones with pretty facial features. (i ranted a little i think and sorry if it came of as a little angry or offensive it was not my intention and also sorry for my broken english :( )

Kudos Ben!!! This video of Mathiew Santoro... It popped up recently and I just watched it from curiosity! From my side, totally personal opinion and perspective, it was one of the most hypocritical videos I ever saw! I knew all the video was an act. I do not recall the part of membership. What hit me though was the point of begging the audience to check out 1, 2, 3, 4 of his latest videos because he did not meet ends meet anymore. (I think this triggers the algorith). He blamed the youtube algorith and somehow the audience for not watching his videos anymore, even though he believed his latest videos were of the best work. We are an audience and if you are not relatable anymore, we will choose something else. It is our right. Don't blame us. You the KZitemr is an independent entertainer.

I suspect that the “blank” diet email probably said they were aligned with your values because of your fitness/weightlifting type stuff you’ve posted (eg. the how many nail polishes can I lift? video), or the fitness podcast maybe - I suspect that means that they probably skimmed through some of the videos rather than being truly familiar with your content (if they had actually watched your videos properly, they would likely have heard you mention how predatory you find influencers promoting diet companies).

Hey Cristine, you briefly touched on the fact that you watch the JCS channel on a previous episode. I wonder if you could do a podcast episode about the True Crime genre. It has really blown up and some of the content seems kind of ... weird and tasteless? I love JCS and true crime but I feel like there is a nuance to talking about horrible cases that altered many peoples lives. Some productions don’t really have that respect or nuance. Just seems like an interesting topic that a crime statistics analyst might have a good insight into.

I am subscribed to one streamer on Twitch, I found him on KZitem and I don't think he's ever had a sponsorship. I know I'm basically paying for free content, but if no one would subscribe he wouldn't be able to stream full-time, Twitch is his main income. I know the principle is a little strange compared to KZitem, but it's a very conscious decision and I like supporting him

Love it when you guys do this type of video. My channel is basically miniscule, and I don't ever expect to be in a position to be getting sponsorship solicitations. But if one day I do, I'm glad there are people like you sharing your experiences and pointing out things to watch out for!

i've neverrrr really been a fan of watching streams for the exact reason you said. it really bothers me seeing people just sitting there getting paid for thanking people for paying them and not doing anything else. if i were to ever get into streaming and find any success with it i would definitely do like... set response times (every hour i go through donos sent before the response timer and have a countdown of how many are left before i get back to business for another hour or wrap up)/dedicated response videos or SOMETHING. something. because urgh its one of my pet peeves and nothing will make me leave a stream faster
