I totally relate to dreading the "what do you do for a living?" lol. As a social worker, I get a lot of "Wow, I couldn't do your job", and a lot of "I'm really worried about a kid because of xyz, should I report it to child services?" My state has mandatory reporting for all people over 18, so usually the answer is yes. And then my pharmacist husband gets all the medical questions and strange rashes shown to him at parties.

I agree. It’s rather quite simple. Example, if you’re an accountant or financial advisor at your job. And then at the end of the day, you leave the office to go home or hang out with your friends at a party, you don’t want people to expect you to do their finances for them simply because it’s what you do for a job. You’re there at the party to enjoy, not to work.

To be honest, I don't think I could do all of it within the deadlines because I am not neurotypical. I wouldn't be able to do full time work and then internships on the side. That is insane. How sad that such a valuable career is so incredibly difficult. On top of that, I can't imagine putting that many years of work to earn so little. Those who can endure are definitely incredible and I am so thankful for those of you that do this line of work- but my heart aches that it is this complicated and that what you earn as a therapist is so meager compared to the work put it. Oi.
@juliejealousy
6 жыл бұрын
Rachel Cyders I’m not neurotypical and I’m in school to be a counselor. I live in a different state though. It’s possible. I know that you can complete my grad program in 5 years but full time is 2. And then you need the 3000 hours within 8 years, which is what I read recently. I think it’s possible to do it part time and with boundaries so you can care for your mental health, but that’s just my opinion. I used to be in a way worse place with my mental health and wouldn’t be able to handle it but I’m in a better place now. I hope that things get better for you over time. 💕

Rachel Cyders well my mom is a teacher and she struggles with an anxiety disorder. I actually work in a school as a teacher’s aide and have managed but yes, unfortunately it doesn’t pay well. I think if you truly love something you should strive to do it, but at your own pace of course. It’s nice that a lot of schools offer part time programs for that reason. The teaching route in the states from what I know is a bit easier because the masters program is a lot shorter and you need way less internship hours to become a teacher.

I am not a therapist. Heck, I'm not always the healthiest and need a therapist, but my PTSD makes me quiet and more of a listener than than a talker. This causes people tell me things I am not always able to deal with. I think with the high-speed lifestyle so many people live under, when they find someone who listens, they use that opportunity. That may be why even when you don't tell someone you are a therapist, they are still telling you things. You make a good listener even when not in therapy mode. It may be a bad hypothesis, but it has been something I have noticed around me for years as well.

Do people have to be evaluated to show they're mentally healthy to become a therapist? I knew a woman who became a psychologist and she would look for potential patients at church. I was in my 3rd trimester when I encountered her in the bathroom and she said, "You must be gearing up for postpartum depression, huh?" "Ummmm..... no. I've never had that. I'm always elated that I'm not miserable and pregnant anymore and that my baby is finally here and safe." She thought it was bizarre and offered her services if I ever needed it.

No we actually don't. I had to be in therapy while I was in training, but that was all my program required... Ugh.. sorry you had to deal with that. xox

I don't think there are any required mental health checks per say, but I can tell you that my professors constantly encourage us to go to a therapist just to see what it's like to be in the client's shoes. Even if we don't have any big issues to talk about. Also, when getting your clinical hours you have a supervisor that is licensed and their role is to guide you through difficult situations/clients, which is somewhat therapeutic if you discuss how your personal issues are effecting your work. From my experience in school I have noticed a lot of people go into this work because they have a personal trauma history, but a lot of the time that can help them empathize and understand their clients better. All counselors need to work through their own "stuff" in order to be competent, and self awareness is highly encouraged in our education. Some people are just bad at their jobs, though, so that's why it's so important to seek out a therapist that you click with!

Thank you, Kati! I think she stopped practicing because she wasn't getting anywhere. She later got into a pyramid scheme and asked me to watch a video about the product. She said she would call me when I was done watching the video. I said, "I can call you." She said, "It would work better if I called you." So she called me, I told her I wasn't interested in the product, and then it turned out her supervisor was on a 3 way call with us. She has serious issues and it blew my mind that she was able to become a psychologist. I avoided her like the plague after that. I also used to work for a psychiatrist who was bipolar, which was always interesting, but very good at what he did.

Is it common for therapists to have their own therapist? Your video on being too attached to your therapist kinda got me thinking. So now I try not to do it unless I really need to. I have been doing alot better.

Of course that’s a thing, Jesus....therapist are humans too and they aren’t entirely perfect people who know every thing about behavioural support. Maybe they need someone to talk to? I've thinking about nursing, therapy, social work, or teaching. Hate being young and indecisive. I've been told I give good advice and I just genuinely listen to people because it's the right thing to do. However it just sucks when it's not reciprocated and people don't care to listen about my problems but oh boy do I have to listen to them. It gets exhausting but guess some just need more help then others, some can't listen lol

I’m a psychologist and absolutely DO NOT tell People what I do. I’ve done it and they start unloading. I’m sorry but I don’t wanna hear it, particularly if you’re a stranger. Mental health professionals are not infinite fountains of compassion and empathy. If someone tells you that they’re a therapist or psychologist or even psychiatrist, do not unload on them. Leave them alone.

thank you for this! found your channel because i was dealing with difficult life things. before that, i decided i wanted to become a therapist after 13 years of working random service industry jobs & 7 years of education from 4 different colleges. i've always felt that "career" was never going to bring me fulfillment until some recent things that make me realize how rewarding helping others was & how much i cared about people in general. pursuing becoming a therapist has created a goal for me that i haven't had for decades. & yeah, your straight forward description has been both a reality check & an inspiration :) so ty.

Yep I have always had people tell me all their info moments after I meet them. Think that's why I decided to go back to school to be a counselor...If people are already comfortable (apparently) talking to me about intimate stuff I might as well learn the best way to respond and not cause harm....And learn how to turn that off.

I used to play the clarinet in high school, but when you major in music you have to learn piano (or at least my program required that) so I can still plunk out notes as needed, but I don't really play anymore :) xox

First rule of being a therapist is don’t tell people you’re a therapist. I usually just say I’m a taxidermist. No one wants to know more after that!

People also always want to tell me what their problem is too. Even though I don't have any medical degree and have my own psychiatric issues. But an aquaintance once told me that they like to talk to me because I never judge that person. So I thought maybe people can read in my bodylanguage that I wont judge them for their problem. Could there be some truth to that?

I didn’t realize your licensing exam was so long! I’m a RN, and mine had 265 questions (but ours varies it can be anywhere from 75 questions to 265). I also run into people wanting to tell me ev-er-ything when they find out what I do, except it’s a little more clinical, like “do you know what this is?” And shows me a random bump, it doesn’t bother me really, but I always just say “you should have it looked at” even if I know, because I can’t truly know, nor can I diagnose. I’m not sure if it’s because of my career or that I’ve been in therapy for a while (10-ish years) but I have friends who are therapists and I’m pretty hyper vigilant about making sure I don’t share too much with them. I’m sure you don’t mind talking to your friends, but I just try to be cognizant of their time and space so if I need to talk I either save it for my own therapist or maybe a different friend.

Can you talk about what skills coaching is like from a therapists perspective? I am always worried that I’m burning my therapist out or she is mad at me. Also I’m wondering how it works if you are at a personal event (party or dinner) or if you have kids (I know you don’t but maybe you know therapists who do) what happens when someone calls you during that time?
@Katimorton

Skills coaching as far as I know is just a training that helps us improve our skills. This could be focused on building up our coping skills to better manage our anxiety, or self harm urges, etc. It really depends on what you're struggling with, but it helps build up our skills so we can manage better in between sessions. As for someone calling when I am a party.. you don't pick up. You have 24 hours to get back to your patients (if it's an emergency they are supposed to call 911 or go to the hospital). So I just wait until it's a better time. xoxo

I can’t speak for other people, but I feel like certain people do give off this vibe that they are a warm and non-judgment person. It weird to say this because you guys are often strangers, but you guys also give off the vibe that makes people feel safe and that you can be trusted. I think that’s why people are so incline to tell you about their problems.

I just hope I can pull of this education off 😂 *edit I’m extremely bad at math and science in general...the only science I’m good at is psychology and brain-related science. Honestly if I’m to be honestly I’m a D to C- in math and science, rip*

I am currently studying Psychology to be a LMFT, go us! I am so excited to be able to help others, but one thing I am nervous about is being attached to my patients and their situations. I know you said you go to therapy as well, but how does one detach themselves from their patients? Also, I love the fact you have a YT channel for those who may be struggling to physically go see someone or may be financially unstable.

Hey kati! I have been dealing with depression and anxiety for years and being home or around my family makes it much worse even though they are not necessarily bad people. They don’t know about my mental issues so when I avoid them they think I’m trying to be a jerk. Because of this, they just so and do things that make it even worse. The worst part about the situation is that the only way I think I could ever get the help I need is through my parents. I can’t even imagine how I Would mention this to them. I have no idea what to do but the longer I wait, the worse it gets, i fear that soon I won’t be able to be helped anymore but I don’t know what to do. I love your videos and they help me so much! Thank you for all of the work you put in every week!

Hi Kati! First of all congratulations for passing all your licensing exams and becoming a therapist! I really admire your perseverence :) I'm also on this similar road now, just started working as an "intern" type therapist. I'm working in Hungary but I can say it's pretty similar than over there... Lots and lots of years of learning and gaining experience and working loads of side jobs to actually make money :D But it's very encouraging to see you do what you like and so well, but at the same time being honest about the rocky parts of this road. Thank you for your videos! Keep them coming :)

The process is so overwhelming and lengthy but worth it in the end. For me it was undergrad, 3 years in grad school (Pepperdine GSEP), 2.5 years post grad accruing my 3,000 hours, 7 weeks studying for the clinical and recently passed on my first try! Btw now the CA clinical is 170 questions (multiple choice) in 4 hours. Love your videos!!!! You’ve helped me over the last few years grow as a clinician. THANK YOU!!
