BPD Intrusion worksheet: www.drdfox.com/worksheets
Being diagnosed with BPD is a scary thing for many individuals, but for some it provides clarification and a framework to understand your thoughts, feelings, and actions about you and the world around you. This video is designed to help with the steps after you’ve found out you have been given a BPD diagnosis.
clarify the misconception that a BPD diagnosis is a sentence of rejection, loss, fear, and further personal and external torment. BPD is the most successfully treated personality disorder and there is no reason to believe you cannot learn the skills and strategies to manage it as so many others have as well.
A diagnosis should be given by a qualified provider. Beware of what is out there in the internet. If you read the criteria for BPD and you think, that’s me that does not mean you would necessarily qualify for the diagnosis. There are many factors at work and the degree of criteria and impact on your life have to be considered.
1st - once you’ve been diagnosed it is important to be hopeful that this condition is treatable.
2nd - ask yourself which aspects of BPD are the most intrusive and hindering your functioning, is it real or perceived abandonment, unstable self-image, self-harm, chaotic relationships, self-destructive behaviors, mood instability, etc. I have created a worksheet to help you, the link is in the comments sections. Do your best to not say yes to all of them, try to rank order them from most impairment to least impairment. Use the Rank Order of BPD Intrusion worksheet. Be patient and take your time.
3rd - find coping mechanisms to help you manage these feelings and behaviors. This is where a mental health provider can help you.
4th - ask yourself, what are the things that are driving these feelings and behaviors? What’s the core content?
5th - explore these core content areas, learn about them and how to manage them. This is where a mental health provider can also help you. I put some slots at the end of the worksheet to help you.
The greatest tool For managing BPD is learning about it and using skills to control it. It is possible, not always easy, but possible. I hope this has been helpful for you.
