awesomefacepalm in between the universes the space should have the same properties (like a medium for fields) otherwise they cannot interact. In our universe the interactions happen between fields. At large scale the interactions between systems are mainly through gravity. The objects that interact are planets, stars and black holes. These are too diverse to be able to create a large scale life-forms, unlike atoms that have precise behavior and properties.

@NikolaosSkordilis

The hypothesis that the laws of physics could (or should) be different stems from the "discovered" (in the mathematical sense only) immense number of different possible string vibrations in string theory. Each different string vibration, since they are the absolutely fundamental units of space, time, matter/energy and everything, is assumed to lead to different laws of physics at the higher levels (a proton is macroscopic compared to a string, which is Plank length sized). In fact the possibility of a multiverse was directly conjectured by string theory, which in some sense is only compatible with a multiverse. So, if string theory (including the unified M-Theory) turns out to be merely fancy math, then the multiverse hypothesis is also effectively nullified.

Here's a theory for you: Our universe (and reality) is like the classic Mario Bros. game, where if you run off either side of the screen you just pop up on the other side. Little Mario, can't exist outside the TV. He isn't made of the right stuff. Neither are we. We could, theoretically travel fast enough to reach the outer limits and break through the barrier of the universe only to re-enter on the far side. I don't think the universe/s are bubbles, where there would be negative space between them (yet another 'space' we that would need explaining), but that they are tessellated, all fitting neatly together, side by side, in all conceivable directions (dimensions), layer on layer... Just a fun thought that could be expanded upon with some good math no doubt. : )

Kai Jiasu well, the cosmic microwave background of the observable universe suggests that everything we can see had a common point of origin. but thats a very limited amount of information. this is where my brain starts to hurt but i mean ok, very simplified questions like "if the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into...?" or what about multiple big bangs, or the multiverse... all that sort of stuff that im too tired to think well about or express intelligently right now... i dont see how we could possibly know whether the universe is infinite or not... and the to compound the headache, there are so many different definitions of infinite... I recommend the Vsauce video on infinity.... im going to bed bow

Cluckery Duckery I think if the universe is expanding it had a beginning. The whole big bang theory basically explains that the universe had a beginning. Or else there would never be a big bang to begin with. And everything that has a beginning is not infinite

Universe, multiverse, omniverse, so on. Ultimately, it's infinite. But that won't stop homosapiens from the pursuit of knowledge. Stephen Hawking says black holes are gateways to parallel universes. Regardless of science, religion, everything humans have accomplished in this pursuit, ultimately it leads to a singularity, the end of physics. Science and religion are just different views of the same picture. I can hold an apple in my hand, see it, feel it, and use my thoughts to say to myself, "this is real." Yes, this is real. But reality is stranger than fiction, which is simultaneously true and untrue. Polar Bears are brown bears whose DNA incurred a mutation - white fur - which ultimately become beneficial to its survival in the polar environment. DNA mutations occur all the time and to every living organism. Who's to say humans are not in the middle of such a transformation right now? I am very interested in what scientists learn about consciousness in the future; the answer as to whether or not the brain acts as a receiver to a collective consciousness.

My personal theory for the Cold Spot and the Axis of Evil: Look at two water droplets on a surface (or floating inside a space station at microgravity) coming close to each other, in slow motion, they start to merge, until they become one larger drop. If one of the drops is water, and the other a drop of...coolaid, as they merge, they mix together becoming half water half coolaid, mixing their properties. If there is something we might compare to gravity in the omniverse that causes portions of different universes to be drawn together (and merge) and as they get closer, I think the Axis of Evil might be like a waistline of where two universes merged, some leftover imprint that is still visible after the physical constants of the two universes mixed together. (And perhaps the Cold Spot is like the far end of the other universe that merged with the one that we technically originated in.*) The merging of the different physical constants of these universe did change each other, but when their different physical constants mixed, In essence their pasts mixed together too, meaning we perceive there being one history; one beginning, to our universe. Perhaps the ways these universes merged and changed each other's physical constants could explain things like how inflation stopped abruptly some time after the Big Bang. Anyway, that's my rambling. I'm sure my thinking has huge holes in it, but that's my basic concept. *As a side-note, if you think traveling a hyper-spherical universe is interesting-going in a straight line long enough ends you up in the same spot that you left, just like circling our spherical Earth-just imagine traveling a hyper-hourglass shaped universe-the hourglass-like shape that is formed in between the two universes as they merge, until they finish merging together and they smooth back out into one larger hyper-spherical universe.

Hi Fraser Cain. Great video, but what really strikes my mind, is that you just repeated what I often heared: 2 universes coming CLOSE enough. So there must be space within, as they would else be in the same space or divided by infinite distance. How can there be different distance, if there is nothing outside to define space, which against would define distance? As a neurological computer science I am very comfortable in thinking in high dimensions, however while I understand the principle of the universe having no edge, I just dont get this distance part of the universe's.

Frasier, that is a fascinating concept but since light and gravity travel in a wave form and at constant speed, doesn't that mean that no other universe could (at least not all the time) exist in the same phase as we do? And to take it a little further, if there were instances where the exact same thing happened in more than one universe and in the same phase along the event tree, would that not require "room" in all the intersecting universe's, resulting in expansion, explaining dark matter / energy in the process?
@frasercain

Fraser Cain, yes i've seen that video and yes it describes the multiverse, but my question was more to the possibility that multiverse would occupy the same space, just in different phases. So we could have no interaction with other universes, except when duplicate events in different universes intersect in a same phase, in a event tree if you will. This interaction could be in the form of expansion as two or more equal events in different universes occupy the same point in spacetime. This would sort of explain the explosive expansion of the big bang where multiple universes had more likely chance to have the exact same thing happen at the same phase.
@frasercain

There are like 5 different flavors of multiverses that have been proposed, and what you're describing is one of them. The problem is that there'll probably never be evidence that we can gather to tell us which one is real.

If the multiverse hypothesis is valid and every universe unit is expanding, won't all the neighboring universes eventually collide with each other? Unless of course some universe are expanding at the "expense" of their neighbors, which are stressed and are instead contracting, or expand/contract in a non uniform way. Personally I see the multiverse hypothesis as a big stretch, and it only emerged in scientific circles (as far as I know) due to the huge number of different vibrations of strings in string theory, only one of which would be compatible with our universe.

I think of the universe not as expanding, but merely becoming less dense.

We don't know if these multiverses could ever interact, and what they could be.

Using evolution as a template, does it mean the big bang happened before, but didn't quite work, say a billion times until it got the mix of gravity, time and space right?
@frasercain

Maybe? We don't know what happened before the Big Bang. If some information can somehow persist in our Universe, it might give us a clue for what came before, but right now, we have no idea.

I always wonder if you travel in a straight line to the end of the universe o you hit a wall or gel type plasma? Then what is beyond that? Then when you keep traveling to the end of that what's beyond that?... So on and so forth.. Can the darkness we see between the stars go on forever? Seems there would be something containing the whole thing and what would that be contained in? So on and so forth.. my brain starts to hurt if I think about it too hard. Some say "there is nothing there yet because the universe is expanding into nothing" that sounds redicules and is harder to fathom than what's beyond the dark..

Universes with different laws colliding seems hard to imagine. Our world is apparently made of quantum fields and waves. Things aren't even moving. The amplitude of the waves propagate that means some amplitude rises in one place and rises further away, therefore the motion is illusive. How could another universe get closer to ours? In my opinion, if the space between the universes is free of fields, information cannot travel through it. Free space cannot exist as room for fields to permeate and if it did It couldn't be detected. The space that enables propagation has some precise properties and can hold the fields, it is not just void. It is like the the memory of a computer. The free bits are not void space but they are allocated on a real board. A virtual 3d free space is not just void but an allocated space on a real memory board.

What evidence do we have that would suggest separate universes having a whole new set of laws of physics? Why can't they all be the same?
@-KillaWatt-

Kinda disappointed you didn't mention The Great Attractor in the Hydra-Centaurus Supercluster. I know its been suggested its just a dense area of space but there is evidence that the anomaly may be a universe pressing against ours pulling matter in its direction.

It's the same for trying to figure out the actual shape of the universe. We can't really tell because we are in the universe, but we have some ideas.

+Yahntia They exist in probability-space. One universe is filled with stuff that is impossible in the other universe until the chances for impossible stuff to happen add up enough to intersect with other universes. Our Universe for example is right now colliding with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and you can see them touching by going on netflix and having a look at the intersecting surface.

Fraser Cain Unless there's a Universe where there is no number 6. Sorry but " No, only things which are possible can happen." has got to be one of the most unscientific things I've heard you say. I have absolutely no idea if there is or is not a "god" because I have never found proof compelling me enough to make a choice. However the fact that someone like Susskind and others can invoke the multiverse in order to explain how our Universe just happens to have everything it needs for life. But that same multiverse follows a strict set of parameters that would prevent certain possibilities from ever arising is ridiculous

Since astronomers need a better way and form of observation, could we send a telescope to pluto or farther to increase observations? Would a telescope that farther away allow for farther observation or is there no actual difference for observation with earth and pluto? I know it's far fetched and highly unlikely to happen, but would we see more or no?

If there is a multiverse out there, and each universe is some sort of a bubble which is expanding. Then there must be space between those bubbles right? or are those universes perfectly align with each other leaving no space between each other. Space between the space. How meta.

Could it be possible that, if you zoom out, our universe is just organized like a giant elliptical galaxy without a center point it orbits around, and that different universes are organized just like galaxies too? And the space between universes is just like the space between galaxies, just much much greater because, well, the distance between galaxies are so great, that when you scale that up to universe size, the distance between universes are so great that you can't see the light from their galaxies. And if this were true, could that mean that those other universes exist within the same reality that we do, so therefore their laws of physics and everything are the same? And if this were the cases, that could mean that, whatever the big bang was, is an event that happens all across what I call the cosmic reality (the space that holds stars, galaxies, and in this case, universes too) and creates galaxies in a similar way to ours. So while those other universes would be totally different from ours, the same basic laws of reality would apply.

I wouldn't say the idea of a multiverse is 'way out there'. Most of the physicists I have met tell me they suspect the multiverse theory is correct. They don't have any evidence for it so it remains a suspicion, but I think there's something to it as well. You know what would be REALLY interesting? If we lived in a multiverse of exact duplicate universes, exactly the same in every large & small detail.

at 0:16 you said if you travel in one direction you end up back at your starting point. that would be true if we lived in a closed universe. but we don't. so you wouldn't end up back where you started.
