I had the same problem last winter, same engine (M272). I read that Mercedes recommends changing both idler, the belt and the tensioner all at the same time but I was tight on money so I first replaced the belt and it was fine for a week then one of the idlers got noisy. Replaced that and it was fine for another week and then either the other idler or the tensioner got noisy. So fuck it, I replaced them both to get it over with. Lot of people in your comments complaining that you replaced more than just the one worn part, but if I had to go back to a shop 3 times because I kept insisting they only replace the problem part, I'd have spent a crapload more in labor than just getting the recommended repair in the first place.

@@DavidJDM it's not a dumb comment, you and the other guy show that you have little idea how mechanical systems work. The comparison with the tires is bullshit, cause if a tire needs to be replaced it's usually cause it got damaged by some outside factor like a curb or a nail etc. That doesn't in anyway correlate to the other tires. Only if the rubber is too old or the tread is gone do you replace all of them. A pulley system is different, these pulleys and idlers run on bearings. Over time bearings will wear out and if one of your 3 bearing stacks fails its logical to assume the other bearings will fail soon too cause they are all in one system working in the same environment. But ofc everyone can decide for themselves if they just wanna replace the shot bearings and leave the rest to be replaced down the road or replace all at once. Calling it service position is wrong. The pins are there for the factory. Tensioners get shipped with the pin installed, it's then bolted to the engine and pin is removed after belt gets installed. Imagine if a factory worker putting belts on would have to fiddle with the tensioner. Much cheaper to plop the belt on and release the spring.

@@Rudy97 but it is called the service position. That's what it says right on Xentry. 🥴 MB even recommends you save the pin. There is also a specific tool just for this, but we all just save the pins.

I've seen where those seal bearings can be restored by breaking the seal and cleaning out whatever is in there and filling it with synthetic grease.

I would just change that bearing and it would be good to go!!!!!!!!

I’ve thought about doing this job on my 2006 ML350. Pretty much the exact same job as this C300, just a bit higher off the ground. Shouldn’t be too hard the next time it needs to be done.

Much easier on the W164 chassis because they were designed for the OM642, and M273 engines as well. So much more room to work when equipped with the M272 V6. On the ML350 you can use a 1/2 drive breaker bar with a 17mm socket on the tensioner with room to spare. On this W204, you will have to pull out some lower profile 3/8 drive, or remove the fan to give you the room necessary.

Glad you replaced them all. Most people forget that they all work collectively, so if ones beginning to fail the others can't be far off.

What's that noise you ask? It's expensive. That's what that noise is.

Replace your tensioners and idlers. Our SL550 had one seize, shred the belt and take out the radiator.

Replaced mine all at once aswell. Didn’t have an issue just the belt was worn. Bought the car used I believe the belt was original at 80k miles. Parts are cheap and took me 1hour taking my time.

Isn't that noise annoying. I had W211 and it made a very similar noise. The dealer changed the upper left pulley twice and then put a performance one because it kept breaking. Then took it to a mechanic and he changed the cranckshaft belt pulley and never had an issue.

The people making comments on prices and what was replaced shows exactly their knowledge of cars in general! I've owned 5 Mercedes and every single one had over 100k miles on them! Bullet proof!

Paid 150 to have my turn signal lighting electrical looked at and was told it was a ground issue. Was told they could fix it for 450 on top of the 150 paid. Told them I will do it and took it home. (Now I maintain all my vehicles) The stealer ship tech ripped the engine ground that had nothing to do with with the front turn signals. Replaced the engine ground and still no turn signals. Then cut the ground wires and added new connectors. BOOM signals fixed. Never take your vehicle to a dealership

Doing this job on a 99 jeep wrangler tj 4.0, the one idler pulley bearing seized up and started chewing up the mounting surface of the air conditioning bracket where the pulley bolts to, it's no longer a flat surface for the idler pulley to sit going to change out the bracket be good to go.
