The entire ethos of punk was originally the idea of being unique and playing whatever equipment one could put into a useful way to make loud, obnoxious noises that can be both boisterous yet still musical. Never let the equipment limit your creativity. As skills grow, knowledge will also grow. Find ways to improve gear in small increments. Too much too soon can be dangerous and habitual. Just get a guitar, an amp, and a cable to plug in and have fun. MAKE NOISE!

In my opinion any guitar with a humbucker on the bridge will do. Although the sigle coil Telecaster bridge pick up is also great for distortion. El Hefe from NOFX plays one live for as long as he’s in NOFX I believe. Personally I prefer a Stratocaster with humbucker. It’s light and I prefer the neck shape to the Les Paul. I own a Les Paul R8 but I rarely use it live, only for recording. Also because I’m afraid of someone stealing it from me...

I would also recommend the Seymour Duncan Hot for Tele set. Perfect amp searing punk tone from that bridge pickup!

For me it's more to do with the pickup. P90 or humbucker will get you there definitely, single coils don't have as much balls and sound weaker/quieter. You might be able to drive single coils more by cranking gain to compensate but that's not really a good idea since too much gain doesn't sound great. As for models of guitar, the two models I think of when it comes to punk are the Stratocaster and the Les Paul/Les Paul Jr.

if you go back to before punk was commercialized, it was whatever you could get, and how you want to sound. Misfits Legacy of Brutality sounds like heavy Fuzz pedal use, Bad religion were known for just using Jrs with Amp distortion and not much in the pedal dep. if its can be reduced to something formulaic, it might be punk-ish sounding music, but punk is not a music genre, a fashion, or a phase, its a way of life more like a religion, which expresses itself in the above mentioned things among many others. i recently explained this to a couple who were shit talking the fact that im an almost 50 year old with a mohawk and dental floss stiched patches on my clothes, who mentioned how they did that when they were like 20 blah blah (they didnt think i could hear them,) but I walked up and let them know that if you "grow out" of punk, you were always just a poser to begin with, and it wasnt really something that meant to them what it does to some of us, and if normies "got it" it would be rendered meaningless. Also we talk out our ass a lot like were tapped into some secret wisdom, but often just enjoy pissing the rest of you off.

My HSS strat is in the shop and I want to use it for my pop punk band, I also have a godin icon type 3, it’s like a big chambered les paul with 3 p90s but lately i’ve been killing for an SG, i think SG’s and Les Pauls are key to that 80s east coast straight edge chunky tone
@anndynegative

Les Pauls definitely have a thicker tone because they frequently have more wood and are physically heavier...but strats just have the punk rock vibe for me...how does that Godin sound?

But live it KILLS my back so I bought a fender Mexico strat but plugged into the same amp the strat doesent sound good at all?? Same settings the epi sounds killer but the strat alotttt brighter any suggestions? Confused here as the strat is amazing as it’s light and looks rad af
@anndynegative

It depends on what pickup you have in the Strat. Also, the wood of the body effects the tone, because there's more wood in an LP it has a different sound (and is heavier). Try tossing a humbucker in the bridge if find the Strat to be too harsh!

@@anndynegative thank: for the reply man!! I actually have a humbucker in the bridge I’m thinking of getting a higher output one if that would help? It’s just stock rn I also want a junior (epiphone of course I’m not made of money) but seems to be out of tuning problems with it advice there ?

I'm thinking of buying a semi-hollow guitar. Got any advice for the best control board/amp settings to make a semi-hollow sound totally punk?
@anndynegative
10 ай бұрын
As soon as you add any distortion it's going to feedback a lot, meaning you'll already be 90% of the way there!
@nicholasrella6904
Ай бұрын
I've seen punk bands play semi-hollows. The biggest challenge is controlling the feedback. Keep the gain to a minimum. Try to keep the guitar as far away from the amp as possible. Move your guitar all around the room & test out the angles & sweet spots. Certain spots & angles will give you more feedback.

all good but you have mess in pickups names and constructions :D Tele neck pickup is not a lipstick pickup. It is just pickup with inner construction of classic fender single cased in metal tube. Gretch guitar displayed in your video didn't had mini humbuckers but filtertrons.

I have an epiphone LP $200 beater that was basically dumped on me by my ex, because the wiring in it was bad, and her ex had given it to her, broken like that, and promised to teach her how to play. I threw a GFS Dream 180 humbucker in the bridge, a GFS Dream 90 'Bucker sized P90 in the neck, and then completed it with a Seymour Duncan Active Blackouts Preamp/volume pot drop in kit. One of my most killer sounding, best overall playing axes is a god damned beater/student guitar with aftermarket parts. The metal and punk tones I get with D'Addario EJ21 strings and tuning to D standard or lower is actually surprising, almost as surprising as the tuning stability in Drop-A tuning lmao. Meanwhile some elitist douche somewhere struggles to keep their $2600 actual Gibson in tune between takes despite their "Play Authentic" printed Tee. Sad.
