Keep up the good work. It's always nice to have someone willing to share the knowledge. BTW, I started using Java with Eclipse, but it seems that VS Code is becoming universal tools, regardless of the programming language and the platform (I have Manjaro on my laptop, and Windows on my desktop). It kind of seems that Visual Studio is becoming obsolete.

Hi, thank you, that's very kind of you to say! Haha, I've done a lot of object-oriented and Java coaching, a very familiar topic. However, I picked up a bit more functional style since then so cannot go so fanatically OOP anymore. But an episode on the differences, nuances, could be cool. I have decided to not do the very basic Java or Python tutorials, since that has been done so much and so good already, as well. But I will gladly visit something if there's a unique viewpoint I can bring in. OOP vs FP might be one, let's see.. :)

Thanks :-) Can you do video on using an IDE for single use java programs or at least very basic programs that only have a couple extra class files? I love using IDE's, help alot with coding for UNI assignments but running single files etc, is a big pain... any tips?
@DevXplaining
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Hmm, most IDEs should be able to deal with single files rather easily, I use VS Code a lot these days and it can definitely be opened in a folder with a few Java files, to run whichever you want for example. Have you taken a look at this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yqR73H2ImGtzq44 - I show some Java crazy stuff in this video. But the main point being, there's VS Code IDE, and 10 separate simple Java files, with nothing more complicated structure. Is that what you're looking for?

Can you recommend ide for advanced projects
@DevXplaining

Hi, there are a few variables: - What do you do with the IDE? Multi-language support? Good tools for frontend work? - Pay money for license or free? Anyways, I have my own favorites. For my daily work I use IntelliJ Idea Ultimate edition, because it's awesome for all, works, and company pays the license. Of course there's also specialized IntelliJ setups for Python (PyCharm), frontend (Webstorm), etc. IntelliJ Community Edition is also pretty good, and free, but lacks support for many things, but for example it's great for basic Java stuff. VSCode I use a lot with quite advanced projects, too, since it handles any languages you throw to it, scales well, is easily available, and free. I think downside here is that depending on your extensions, it can easily get broken or just messy. Another problem being that with extensions bigger team might have different settings for all coders. My answer would be that any IDE is good for advanced projects, you just should know the pros and cons of each, and manage them somehow. So with the free choices, perhaps be a bit conservative with how many extensions you install, and share the extensions and settings between team. But my personal choices: IntelliJ Ultimate, if company pays for it, VSCode otherwise.

IntelliJ UI seems too convoluted, and layout is confusing especially for a beginner. For simple things like run code user is offered 10 ways of doing it, and shortcuts are impossible to remember, 3 or 4 key combos. You cannot run two instances of it. It needs to have a basic mode and shortcuts needs to have presets, ie if you are familiar with another UI you can load those presets and use your familiar shortcuts instead of learning a new.

Hi Joseph, thanks for your feedback! VSCode is a good editor for Java; You'll need two more things however. You do need to install JDK, whichever version of Java you want to play with. And you need a suitable extension. You are in luck, since I have made a video on both topics, I hope they'll help you. For installing JDK, there's many methods, I'm showing one here, but you can also just download and install it directly, or follow any instructions on your learning material. Of course, also there are some differences depending on the operating system you are running. Here are the videos: kzitem.info/news/bejne/op2Zp4uqaZaWoqw (How to install JDK my way) kzitem.info/news/bejne/qaqNv4iYjHilpH4 (How to setup VSCode for Java development) And, happy new year! :)

Good question, I used Eclipse a lot back in days, and problems I used to have were: - It only gets good once you install a lot of extensions - and then it gets also unstable, and everyone in team has a different setup - It used to be a bit slow, and and clunky, to start But it got the work done. Have to say I haven't tried Eclipse for a decade now, so cannot give a fair comparison of modern Eclipse. Perhaps I should though? I think all IDEs are good once you get into how they work and start using the enhancements they have. Eclipse has been around for a while, so one benefit is definitely that pretty much anything you can imagine someone has created an extension for it :)

Please link some facts on that. Java Language specification, chapter 1, page 1: "The Java programming language is normally compiled to the bytecode instruction set and binary format defined in The Java Virtual Machine Specification, Java SE 17 Edition." So how is that about for basics? :) No worries, I will be making plenty of errors in the future in my videos, but this was not one of them.

I would say only get the licensed products if you are making a lot of money from them and you can expense them, otherwise stay with the free stuff.
@DevXplaining
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, agreed, paying money typically gets you better support, more tooling, and more wholesome experience. And making money, even the heftiest license is typically no more that a few hours of work. So yeah, it makes sense. I like the free stuff as well mostly for the ease of getting the same IDE in multiple environments, setup the same way. Right now I think I have 5 environments with VS Code. So while I do love my IDEA, and get the license from company, that's only for one computer at time. Also many people are starting up their programming as a hobby, or running things small scale/side hustle, so then it definitely makes sense to start with the free stuff. Since time is the most valuable currency for me, my rule is that if I feel (using free stuff) it's starting to eat up my time, then it's time to pay for the licenses, provided of course that tool/product/platform is really worth the money. Most often license fees are insignificant compared to other investments.
