Had the GLS, sold it for a certified LX570…never looked back. Cost for Lexus service waaaaayyy less. V8 is super smooth. Waiting for an LX600 for the Mrs. Everything you said about the Merc for comfort and smoothness is true. But, service cost and reliability not close. The LX’s are keepers.

1K - 100K does not matter. What matters is, what is your long term ownership plans? Lease the Mercedes. Repeat if you like it at the end of the lease. Or buy it and trade in at the end of the warranty and repeat if you like it. Where as, the Lexus, I think it is fair to say, you can do that plan as well, but if you want it as a 1 and done purchase that will last you 20+ years with minimal maintenance and or repairs, it is the smarter choice. Mercedes can be just as reliable, but the service fees are more frequent and more expensive to keep it in good shape. And yes, I speak from experience. Along with my folks and relatives and have done my online research homework. IF I were spending that kind of $, I would have the kind of $ to flip the Mercedes on a lease plan or ownership during warranties. And it is what I would pick.

What no one mentions is that this isn't even a true mercedes. It's built in Alabama, which means that its quality is nowhere near as good. In contrast, the lexus is still made in Japan. The German built mercedes are a lot better, but of course they wanted to be cheap and even chose to build some of their high end models in america. If you were spending that much for a mercedes, the least you'd expect is it to be built in Germany. Even some of their amg models are built in America

Toyota/Lexus as been number 1 in reliability year after year for several years. In a huge part because they don't innovative much, unlike Mercedes. Toyota decided to change their ways a couple of years ago and they have had turbo problems and other issues with their Tundras and NX models. With that said, I bought a 2015 RX for my wife and it has been the best vehicle she has owned. Still, as you mention, Lexus doesn't come close to the quality of materials and attention to detail put into the vehicles. I have owned a 2010 Mercedes E350 with 230,000 miles and counting and they cannot compare. With all do respect, Lexus is a Toyota with an ok tuxedo on. From the materials used inside to the material used in the engine compartment, Merc wins. No car, other than BMW (and probably Audi), has double hood locks. I have never seen a Lexus with a hood that can open 90 degrees. Everyone knows Toyota brakes are terrible, especially when hot. That doesn't happen with a Merc. Tranmissions? Toyota transmissions, even in their IS 500, have been said to be a slow trans. Yes, they can last, but so can a Merc. P.S. No Lexus is in the top 3 of most driven miles. Merc is.

So the LX600 starts off at 93k and the GLS isn't too far off from that amount. The top end Ultra luxury LX has captains chairs that in itself, tacks on a hefty price to its base model variant. The overall vehicles are comparable but given the difference in trim, you really should keep the price out of scope of this comparison.

Call me weird, but imo, conversion vans are way under the radar and you get far more luxury for less. As Hoovie says, they are private jets for the road. With up to 4 rows of heated and massaging seats, high tops, 4x4 options, tables, a large tv, and enough grunt to pull your 40' yacht too, what's not to love?? Yeah, the outside won't impress your friends, but who cares?? I'm not out to impress people I don't like anyway. If full size conversions are too big for daily use, AWD minivans are an option. Yes, I sad the "m" word, but has anyone seen the Pacifica Pinnacle lately? The interior is nuts! Add the fact that you can turn the keys over to an upfitter for more luxury craziness and I'm sold.

In 7 or 8 years, when you are approached with "Hey, would you be interested in selling that?" You won't be the guy or gal in the Mercedes. Call it how you see it, but that's the truth. Other than a lease and dump it's hard to make a case for the Mercedes value. I did not hear any discussion of build quality, I think at 100k that is relevant, perhaps not to a reviewer, but to a buyer.

Nathan, if you want the best third row and more usable cargo area, the Lexus TX is more comparable to the GLS. Granted its around 20K less expensive than the LX and GLS, the LX third row really lacks headroom and also your knees are in your chest. The TX fixes those issues and has a better third row than both of them.
