I’m an outbound mechanic and was asked to set up repairing outboards in the South Pacific for resorts. All these resorts tried to save money but the result was outboard graveyards and the only outboard that survived was Yamaha! It’s pretty impressive to see a big Fijian pull starting with a rope on a 250!!! The worst outboard was Mercury by far. I knew an old fisherman from Suva that had 21000 hours on an oil injected Yamaha 2 stoke and although I’m back in Australia, I think it’s still going strong!

Haha, yeah I have family in Fiji and we are there quite often so I can 100% agree that all I ever see still running there is Yamaha's of just about any vintage!

I spent decades saltwater fishing with my uncle and he ran the same late 70's two stroke Johnson the entire time...he's gone now and so is Johnson...both make me incredibly sad. I still see my uncles old boat on the water, a painter friend of my uncle ended up with it a few years back, and the same Johnson was still going strong when I last saw the boat a couple years back. I myself now fish almost exclusively fresh water and have a 15 year old Mercury that, knock on wood, is still running strong. I will likely re-power in the next couple years and have my eye on Suzuki...their latest outboards seem to be very popular and dealers are starting to pop up around where I live.

Yeah man agree have ran so many if those old 2 strokes. And you can't go wrong with a Suzuki either. I think they can all be pretty good if looked after

Great informative video well done. Just wanted to mention about honda. As far as research and development. Honda built there V6 for a multi million sales car market. There research and development on that motor would have been massive to make a bullet proof long lasting, low maintenance car engine. Completely understand that Honda marine has not tried to reinvent an engine that had been completely sold in the car market and can be well used in the marine market as well. Really enjoyed watching your video. Just thought it was important to maybe mention that Honda well and truly have engineered the V6 for a reliable solid long lasting engine in cars and adapted it to outboard engines. Thanks Damien

Great comparison between brands, good info to know before repowering. For the small capacity outboards, namely 40hp, what brand would you recommend? I would think weight would be most important in this size. Thank you

Yeah no worries. I keep coming back to the Suzuki's myself. But the new Mercs over 200hp are tempting. Ultimately, exact specs, warranty and proximity to good dealers are important factors to also consider.

I’ll send you a photo of the outboard graveyards in the pacific - 90% Mercury - there was a joke about them but I can’t post that! It involved work ethic and colour. Also remember that there was no sales agents for Suzuki or Honda.

Very interesting reviews thanks! But - and maybe it’s changed since your review but re. Honda weight… The weight comparisons are a bit off for me. The Df200 is lighter than the BF200 by 70lbs - TRUE but the BF is a V6 and the DF is an inline 4 - so no surprise there!! BUT when you compare the V6s in Honda and Suzuki in 225 + the Suzuki seems to be heavier!
@BaitBallin

Yeah my point was U need to carefully check every model. Some are ok, some are super heavy for their HP rating. Both those 225s are heavy.

Recently I bought a Suziki 140 hp, before buying it I heard the reviews and I hear about the 6-year warranty however I live in Puerto Rico and here the warranty that you give me is only 3 years. Clearly I am communicating with the company Suzuki directly, if anyone knows the reason can tell me.
@BaitBallin

I think the plus 3 years is offered only in certain countries and it's not by Suzuki global, but the Suzuki wholesaler of that country. That's my understanding anyway....

I used this 3 sylindred 526 ccm Tohatsu for 12 years a four stroke injection, that where a wery good engine, out year round here in Norway and reliable, but no i have this 9,8 on a 10 feet Pioner PE plastic outside my door because must have a light boat and engine to reach some islands through a channel. That little engine is impressive good but old teck inside , carburator, but that dont bother me, as long as clean fuel and oil, it goes and goes and already ab 160 hours since 2021 when new.@@BaitBallin

I am looking at a second hand boat and it has a suzuki df140 2017. When I checked the gauge the operating hours is less than the trip hours (79 vs 84). What could be the explanation? Thanks!
