For me the best part is that damage doesn't get applied until the end of the phase , sure you mark it off as it happens . But this feature stops a boring game that depends on going first and just alpha striking your opponent off the board

Yep. Of course luck does still play a part and crazy shit can always happen, but because you just can’t wipe your enemy out before they have the chance to do anything in the manority of cases, the focus isn’t on hoping to get lucky rolls or having an optimal army list or something like that, but on the turn-to-turn maneuvering. It’s less bashing action figures at each other and more like… plotting out a fight scene? Ah, my analogy skills are failing me today.

100% agreement on damage. Damage plus heat management give it such an interesting feel where you really need to conserve and manage resources.
@almostgoodvariant

Yeah, heat is definitely an essential part of BT! Ammo is generally a non-issue for one-off games, but heat is always there. There’s always interesting choices to be made between risking the dangers of overheating and playing more conservatively, potentially missing out on opportunities to deal a lot of damage.

Randomness baked in. Skill matters, strategy and tactics matter... But if Lady Luck frowns upon you, the battle goes poorly. This is a stark reflection of reality and the morbid nature of combat. Imagine the Normandy Invasion. Think of the scene from Saving Private Ryan if nothing else, an accurate portrayal of the chaos of real combat. Imagine that you are the most talented and gifted.... Sniper... The entirety of the allies has to offer. Your skill with a rifle is unmatched, a genuine virtuoso at firing at long range, a marksman for the ages, a natural leader and tougher than nails. Got the best training possible, and was destined to become one of the greatest heroes in the history of warfare.... And he's one of the guys that gets shot in the head getting off the boat before he can even set foot on the beach. That's morbid, but that is the reality of combat. Skill and tactics can always be defeated by simple bad luck. This is baked into Battletech at a few levels and I think criticals, initiative rolls etc. Really capture that and bring that chaotic reality to combat. Many war and RP games do this... But Battletech does it really well. It's not completely random,.skills matter.... Tactics matter... It all matters.... But there is a realistic amount of combat chaos courtesy Lady Luck. When you bake that into the rich lore, complex and realistic mechanics with ranges , varying damages, heat management, ammo, risk of ammo explosions, pilot injuries etc etc etc. It creates a fun, yet shockingly realistic combat simulation... It all feels about right without getting overly complex. Down to the amount of time luck saves or screws you. It's the right balance I think. And maybe 'balance' is the word to describe it all. Fairly simple rules and they pull it off well. To me that's the beauty of the system. Add in the lore and feels like a very real universe to play in.

For me, the best thing is the sense of storytelling that comes together out of the mechanics. If you're playing a game like 40K or Dropzone, it's very top-down and you're generally removing multiple models at a time. The narrative is a broad one where the sweep is based around "this squad advanced and took casualties", you're disconnected from the exploits of individual models outside of, say heroes or other centrepieces. In BattleTech, even if you don't name your pilots you still have the sense of more personal, intense action as the guy in the cockpit is manoeuvring, taking damage, hoping that the next hit isn't the right arm, managing the heat... It's incredibly immersive in a way many modern wargames aren't. There's a reason a lot of BattleTech fiction writers actually use the game's mechanics to flesh out their action scenes - Mike Stackpole was infamous for pulling out some dice and record sheets to figure out the flow of a fight in his books, he'd just fudge some of the rolls to make sure the end result he wanted would happen...

My favorite part of the game is actually building a lance. During the game, I agree that rolling hit locations is the most exciting part. My favorite part during the game is deciding what weapons to fire and where. I love that the resource system is heat- where you can pay more than you can afford, but it has detrimental effects.

Brand new to Battletech, so I can't say anything about Lore. Hopefully one of these days I will get into it. I agree with your assessment. Everything is integrated well, and that's what makes Battletech unique. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

I enjoy the games ability to scale combat. from a simple 1 mech v 1 mech, to lance (4 v 4) to company to combined arms (infantry, armor, air etc) to space battles. it's all under the same rules structure without any conversion or translations. we set up planetary invasion. this includes a space fleet, several Divisions of combined arms and the support for the combat units. while systems like Battleforce and alpha strike exist and are good, we play out the battles using standard battletech (classic). it becomes a game of command and control as well as logistics. and all of this is within the published rules. most people enjoy lance or star combat. the game is capable of so much more.

I was interested in BT but when I saw that you could have other units than just mechs is when I got really excited. The potential for scalability is really awesome - like you said, from one-off duels to sprawling campaigns taking place on and off planets. Excited to get to play those eventually!

@@almostgoodvariant The tactical Ops with expanded optional rules are a blast. Adding terrain and weather conditions. If you play Tukkayid maps, some maps could get your mech damaged just by moving.

Scalability is fantastic. I’m on the other end of the spectrum, playing with my 7 and 11 year old boys. They need faster paced gameplay, and Alpha Strike is perfect for us! At some point, I’ll bring them in for the full gameplay of Classic Battletech, but we’re not there yet.

For me classic is the best way to play. Alpha Strike is great when I want a quick almost video gamey game. The simulation aspect of classic is what makes it so good. Chewing through armor, finally getting a good critical hit and having to manage heat is what makes it an immersive experience. Really my one and only gripe is the golden bee bee. Those rare instances of through armor critical hits. They happen so rarely in my experience that it barely deserves reference. Hands down my favorite tabletop game

Both. Played 40k and loved the lore but the new edition every 3 years killed me. BT is pretty much the same over 35 year span. Anyone from 1st year and picking up the game in the 35th year doesn't have to worry much about different editions other than rule tweaks. I am looking at you punch table when partial cover exists... Now just love 40k lore and playing BT. Although BT lore is awesome.

The reaource management for each Mech and Vehicle gives the game an attention to detail you don't get with other games. However, I feel the system itself is the best part. Vert little, and I mean that, has changed since the early days of BT. 40k changes up every 2 years or so simply to move mini product, that's the #1 reason. . Battletech can be played in any era, with the books from the 80s and 90s, and your good to go.

best part of battletech is the lore becoures it is accessible at least more-so then the table game. never meet some one who playes where i live nor a store selling minis. but read novels and wiki pages of lore :)

Yeah movement might be the most fun and interesting part of the game but not the most unique. Chess is the game that is all about movement. Chess doesnt have damage or narrative like battletech does, ehich are fun aspects to the game, but the best part of miniature gaming is knowing that the odds can be manipulated. To be able to manage randomness is a skill that is sharpened with miniature gaming that games such as chess cannot provide.

Alpha Strike is also a fun game and I like playing it but apart from ”is pretty quick to play”, ”has a pretty tight and straightforward ruleset” and ”lets me put a lot of stuff on the table” I’m not sure I can say what the best part of the gameplay is.

There are aspects of that in the crunchiness, yeah. I dislike and often forget ammo management, for example. Then again, ammo isn’t a big deal in one-off games.
