I don’t know if it’s a shame or a bliss, but I haven’t played any of these 5 games. I know they are at the top of the RPG genre. I’ve been a stickler for playing them in the most original way, however these games are expensive. All these games are at the top of my to-play list. You’re comment on Super Mario RPG being suitable for newcomers to the genre made me wonder which games fit that same criteria. We all need some gateway game to bring our friends over to rpg heaven. Maybe in a future list video. I’m really liking the energy that your bringing to your newest videos. This one was on fire with all the cuts, it had great tempo. You make me want to comment and contribute to the discourse.

@pixelbrolee top 5s are good. I think you're sitting on gold to make even a short video explaining the end phrase "Video game discourse is important, we should continue. " I say this as an English teacher who noticed it's totally okay to talk about Netflix binging The Witcher, but if you actually talk about the game itself for some weird reason it isn't given the same level of respect. Even though the TV show is based on the video game. I wasn't explicitly told I couldn't discuss video games in a classroom, but I was warned it was better to leave some topics untouched. To which I immediately said that beginning in 2018, video games became the most profitable entertainment medium in the world, even above movies. Now, the best music composers work on video games first, movies second. Speaking of another famous example, the new Super Mario Bros movie. Chrono Trigger would be an excellent example for how video game discourse works. I explained to my daughter I'd encourage her to make and listen to music, make and look at art, make and listen to stories, play board games or the challenge of a musical instrument or sports, so isn't video games just taking all of those elements and putting it in one package that you have some level of control over? I tried phrasing that as positively as I could and as succinctly as possible. I think you'd have an excellent video on that topic, and I hope you have a fantastic day bro.

Those are all excellent games that would also be accessible for newcomers to RPGs. Some additional retro JRPGs that are of very high quality but also accessible to newcomers are Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force II, Lunar I & II, Grandia I & II, the SNES version of Final Fantasy IV, and Lufia II. Some modern JRPGs that also fit that criteria are Ys IX, Rise of the Third Power, Persona 5 Royal, Triangle Strategy, and Cosmic Star Heroine. While some of my favorite JRPGs are games I would recommend to a general audience interested in that genre, others would appeal to more of a niche audience and might be the opposite of beginner-friendly. Shin Megami Tensei is my favorite game series and it might seem overwhelming to some JRPG players and especially newcomers because of the games having high difficulty, a very technical combat system that must be learned to succeed, and a lack of hand-holding in what the player is supposed to do. The dark themes, mature subject matter, and sometimes disturbing stories might also be off-putting to some players, so even though I consider it to be the best thing I have experienced in gaming, it also isn't something I could recommend to everyone.

Great vid! I would say if we are talking general RPG not just JRPG mine would be: 1) Mass Effect Trilogy 2) Dragon Age Origins 3) Persona 4 4) Witcher 2 (love Witcher 3 but 2 is the perfect length) 5) Skyrim. JRPG is a huge genre though so that specific category is hard to nail down for me.

It's nice to see someone else who is heavily into SMT. SMT 3 is my favorite game of all time and SMT 4 is my second favorite. The gameplay of mainline SMT is incredibly addictive and I often find myself replaying those games and neglecting my backlog as it continues to pile up. 😆

@ophidianmind333 my issue with replaying them is the amount of stress I get playing them haha. I played 4 once, and I got the neutral ending just answering the game honestly, and all that extra work I had to do to end up getting to the end was ROUGHHHHH
@ophidianmind333
Жыл бұрын
@@jeremymay56Yeah, the games can be quite challenging, especially when playing to get an ending with special requirements. Players who had previously gotten one of the other endings will be in for a surprise if they go for the True Demon ending in SMT III and have to fight a super boss much more difficult than anything else in the game after the normal final boss fight has ended. Though that's also one of my favorite boss fights in any RPG. 😆

Saw Frog, clicked. "Final Fantasy VI is a wonderful game" wrote this and exited. Only the story/characters and atmosphere is good. As a game, as in, mechanically, it's trash. Braindead combat, alongside grinding. Also graphics are bad even for pixel artstyle. Would be as good in Visual Novel format lmao

Maybe more accurate to title this "Top 5 retro RPGs Everyone should play" or "Top 5 Pixel RPGs everyone should play"....or honestly "Top 5 SNES RPGs everyone should play" (FF Tactics wasn't on SNES as far as I know, but other than that one). Top 5 RPGs when you don't mention a single 3D game is a bit.....just incorrect.
@pixelbrolee

That's a fair point! What's your list look like?
@Metzlii
Жыл бұрын
@@pixelbrolee That's a tough one. I'll base mine off personal impact and games that left a lasting impression on me. And to single player games, or the list would have WoW and PoE on it. My top 5, not necessarily in a specific order: 1. FFX - This was my first real deep dive into Single Player RPGs, at least at an age where I could appreciate them fully. I love everything about the game, and it still holds up to this day. The only game I have ever replayed more than once as well. 2. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne - Still one of the deepest games with many narrative branches ever made. It's pokemon, but cool and mature, and with a real narrative. I also love how deep it goes with worldwide folklore and theology. 3. FF12 - So many secrets. This game just gives you so much to do and find. FFX has a lot of content. FF12 has a mountain of content, and it feels great to explore and find it. 4. Chrono Trigger - To me the best retro Pixel RPG. The story and characters were outstanding, the time travel was interesting, and there were tons of secrets. The branching paths were (and still are) revolutionary at the time. Sea of Stars may end up being a better version of Chrono Trigger for me, but I haven't finished it yet. 5. Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - I love meta-narrative and god-slaying. i love Sci-Fi. This game took all those concepts, blended them together, and built a 100+ hour RPG around all of that. it has all the depth of exploration and character development of the best Final Fantasy games, but with its own flavor. I grew up with a SNES, then a N64 and finally a PS2. Most of my RPG nostalgia is on the PS2, and a full list of the best PS2 RPGs would fill a novel. I did not really find my love of RPGs until the PS2. I have gone back and played most of the SNES greats as an adult, but they do not have that nostalgia that makes the games on my list personal. I'd probably consider Xenoblade Chronicles 3 just outside this list. There are not a lot of modern RPGs that really hold up to my list, or even the SNES greats though. We lost something important when graphics started mattering more than content and depth.
