Amazing content. Give it a few months and subs will hopefully start rolling on. I can tell your very active with your viewers and its really cool seeing you reply to comments, I really like it when content creators interact with their audience. But if your channel blows up please remember this; try to interacted with your viewers as much as you can and reply to them often. It just makes the experience a whole lot better for people watching the video. Not a lot of big content creators with a large amount of subscribers do that anymore. I mostly agree with the review of Double Dragon 2, except that River City Ransom is the best Double Dragon on the NES. The review that really chapped my hide was Startropics. That's one of the best adventure games of my youth. It's gorgeous to look at, has an immersive storyline with equal parts pathos and humor, and somehow manages to successfully integrate action into puzzles. The difficulty ramp was perfectly tuned, becoming truly difficult when you're on the ghost ship. It was a masterpiece, and did not belong on the bottom of this list. The EGM reviewers had an inflated sense of self importance.

Are you trying to be a troll, or are you just genuinely this stupid? You're *seriously* appealing to Super Smash Bros. as some barometer to gauge how well-liked certain games are? Talk about grasping at straws; this is downright desperate. And besides, if you really wanted to go that route, then let's not forget that the game is *BEING INCLUDED IN THE NES CLASSIC EDITION* this very video is discussing; clearly this is not a decision Nintendo would make unless they felt it would help sell their product, which would only be possible if the game had a strong fan-base. To overlook that is simply denial. Look dude, I get you don't like the game. I accept that. But for you to be this out of touch with what gamers at large actually think about the game outside your own opinion is delusional.

I'm 46 and when I was a kid hanging out at our local bowling alley Galaga was one of the most popular games around at the time. I still remember watching in amazement as one of the local lads clocked it like he wasn't even trying. I think, by the time NES released it , it had already been an arcade game for a few years so people were looking more at the new games we hadn't seen. Still probably the most nostalgic game for me though. As far as those bizarre game mag. reviews, the people who wrote for those mags prob weren't massive gamers like a lot are these days. I doubt those reviews were written by anyone who'd actually played the games.
@jimijamesmarshall2328

VeryFriendly Nihilist I do kinda agree with you but you've gotta understand that when the NES was released these games were still very much loved. We're very much spoilt for games released per year these days and since 2000 the game tech has advanced quite a bit. If you look at the first games released on NES (kung fu,tennis, soccer, duck hunt etc.) they were still quite similar in quality to games like pacman and space invaders, even 7ish years after. Also (and sorry, i'm being a bit picky here) if you look at the title of this vid. It's 'what's the best reviewed game on NES classic', not 'what's the most legit NES game'. I think also that they're putting these games on it to appeal to people like myself who were around back then and remember these games more so than some (for me most!) of the first NES games.They fell a bit flat (in my opinion only) because of their similarities to the games that were already around back then.

The back 10 I, (and I hear from lot of others out there) could have easily loved Nintendo to have spent or worked harder to get some of the franchise titles missing which would have amounted to probably 6 missing sequels (with possibly 2 being the first franchise game) and 4 games being more popular puzzle games/rpg licenses. I hope they make a mini-Snes and would look forward to what they would put on it, hopefully the mini-nes will make them a lot of money and play like a champ. That way they might go even further and get some really good licenses for a mini-snes, maybe even throw in a couple import titles.

This was a great _idea_ for a video, but honestly, with how it panned out I feel like you should've just left this idea in the brainstorming phase. Just ~1-3 magazines for most of these, and even then the newest reviews were in the early 90s -- hardly enough timeliness or especially coverage in general for nearly any of these scores to really mean much at all. I feel like a much better idea if you had to make this video would've honestly been to just go to GameFAQs or somewhere and tally up player reviews; even if less professional on the whole, it'd be a much larger pool of opinions and a much more recent bunch that'd perhaps reflect modern feelings on these games more accurately. Despite all that, though, I think this video was still so well-done, well-edited, and well-researched, with great attention to detail with elements like the magazine covers and excellent music choices as well as the kind of clear, articulate voice that's so rarely found on such small youtube gaming channels, that I can't help but subscribe. So perhaps I'm glad in a way that this video exists after all :P

You guys know you can download the entire library of games, get your favorite controller (there are many options) and play all these old games in better resolution on your computer. Have save states, the ability to re map buttons. Never watch the light blink on ur console again. I love all these games as much as the next guy, my consoles aren't for sale, nor are my carts. The nostalgic value far outweighs what I would get for them. But as long as I can have the proper controller with a good D pad and responsive buttons. PC to me just makes sense, you can run NES, SNES and gensis all off a small jump drive flawlessly and just about any computer, even mac's.

Ah, I do love it whenever you talk about old gaming magazines and the nostalgia that comes with them. I do still think that the NES Classic Edition has some wasted potential despite still sounding fun overall, but any excuse for another great retrospective like this works for me. ^_^ That said, I do know of one update I should inform you of: Nintendo Magazine System was not the only mag to review the original Metroid. Computer & Video Games reviewed it in their July 1988 issue (issue #81), scoring it a 7 out of 10. Although I'm guessing this is limited to magazines you have physical copies of, so that's understandable.

Yeah, apparently they started their "Mean Machines" column (not sure if this spun off into the other magazine of the same name) covering console games around this time, from what the text implies. I'll see if I can find a few others as well. It was easy to miss, since it apparently wasn't that in-depth at the time: The only two other games reviewed in that issue were Rad Racer (7 out of 10) & RC Pro-Am (6 out of 10).
@DefunctGames
8 жыл бұрын
If it's like any of their other issues, they had 2 or 3 console reviews and then about 20 reviews for various computers (Amiga, etc.). I did not archive those scores, since I doubt I'll ever dabble in Commodore 64 reviews. I have many year's worth of Mean Machines archived, but most of that is Sega-related. The later issues did a good job of showing the Mega Drive and Master System scores when they were still part of CVG. You'll see me reference the Mean Machines Sega Ultimate Sega Archive from time to time. I definitely need to get my hands on some of those earlier CVG issues, but tracking them down has been challenging.

I was surprised to receive an email a couple of weeks ago saying my controllers had shipped. When I opened the package, I found two NES controllers, from a company called Old Skhool (or something, don't have them in front of me). Wherever the box had a mention of something NES, it was covered with a gold sticker of some sort. Haven't seen anything on the internet about anyone else receiving these. Any ideas/thoughts?

Your comment actually brings up a few questions. I know the product you're talking about and have seen them before. Old Skool makes a USB controller that looks identical to the original NES pad. They also have a non-USB version that is made for NES consoles (or the redesigned models you can often by online). When you pre-ordered the NES Classic, did the website tell you these controllers would work? I ask because the pictures of the NES Classic make it look like the controller input is proprietary (and not a standard USB connector or the original NES connector). Is this what you have? www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=102800406&cp=&parentPage=search If so, I'm not sure that will work with the upcoming NES Classic console.

Yes, the link you provided does bring me to what I received, and apparently ordered. It was listed immediately alongside the classic NES, and in my haste to not miss the pre-order opportunity, I probably ordered without reading thoroughly. The only difference between what I received and what's featured in the link is the gold stickers.

Just want to point out that Atari and Sega didn't actually make their plug and play consoles, they were made by toy companies and are shoddy products to say the least. Nintendo themselves likely didn't make one (or allow one to be made as it were), however, because they aren't broke.
@DefunctGames

That's an excellent point. I'll confess, I haven't done much looking into the Atari or Sega models. I own the original systems, so I never bought the plug-n-play devices and don't have much hands-on experience. I am hoping for a quality product from Nintendo, and I have a hunch they'll deliver. That said, I'm still surprised it took them until 2016 to make one of these.

There are so many great Super NES games to choose from, it's hard to narrow it down to just a couple dozen. I agree with many of the games on your list, especially when it comes to F-Zero, Mario Kart, Mario World, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Donkey Kong Country, Super Punch-Out, Mega Man X and Super Metroid. I also agree that the system needs to have games from Enix and Square, including ActRaiser, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. If I had to add to that list, I would like to see Flashback: Quest for Identity, UN Squadron, Contra III, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Earthbound, Rock 'N Roll Racing, Axelay, Super Castlevania IV and Pocky & Rocky. I would like to see both the well-known Super NES games and the hidden gems that rarely get ported.

I definitely agree that Super Mario Bros. 2 is better than The Lost Levels. The Japanese SMB2 just isn't a very good game. I like how different Super Mario Bros. 2 is, but it never felt like a true Mario sequel (for obvious reasons). Super Mario Bros. 3 will always be my favorite Mario sequel.

Of course I disagree with your number 1.... not because I'm a HUGE SMB3 fan or that I don't agree with SMB2 being so high.... but mostly cause SMB3 has so much more to the game... even if I liked SMB2 better. I mean think about it.... the jump from how SMB went to add so many other game play elements and maps, whistles teleporting, large huge landscapes and more and more levels blows other games away. SMB2 is more underappreciated than most and I agree is a great game but you have to give credit where credit's due.... Super Mario Bros 3 is the best Mario game on the NES. And I think the original Zelda should be up higher as well since there's so much to that game as well and will always have great replay value for years to come. My 2 cents. Otherwise GR8 review! :)
@DefunctGames

To be fair, *I* also disagree with the number 1. If it was based on my personal opinion, Super Mario Bros. 3 would outrank Super Mario Bros. 2. But since it's based on what the critics said a couple decades ago, there's nothing I can do. But we know, deep in our hearts, SMB3 is better.

If Sega's own version of the NES Classic is any indication, Nintendo will release several iterations (with different games). What's funny is that I never considered that I said "magazine" and "staggering" differently than other people, because everybody in my area says it exactly the same way. But when I posted this video, suddenly that became a focal point and it made me feel a bit self-conscious about it, to the point where I have to rethink how to pronounce those words when they come up so that it's not the only thing people talk about. I appreciate you bringing it up in a non-insulting way. I love ranking the games in this type of format, especially since I have spent so much time looking at the reviews in Electronic Gaming Monthly and Nintendo Power in other series. I plan on doing something similar for both the Genesis Mini and teeny, tiny TurboGrafx-16. Thank you again for watching the videos and leaving kind words.

@@DefunctGames Thanks! Definitely no insult intended, I love the diversity of different accents and dialects, they make the world a richer place. +Project Jellyman FYI Nintendo was working on a prototype for Mario game that scrolled upwards, and had players picking up objects and stacking them to progress. When they were asked to create a game using the characters from a Japanese TV show, they converted their upwards scrolling Mario project into Doki Doki Panic. That is the game that was later converted to Super Mario Bros 2 outside of Japan. It was originally a Mario game, then it wasn't, and then it became a Mario game again. So now explain to me why it shouldn't exist.

All that work making physical consoles over and over again instead of investing in doing digital console emulation for other hardware so they reach EVERYONE instead of just the Nintendo fans who buy Nintendo hardware. Chances are I won't buy this. But let me download an official Nintendo emulator and sell me a bunch of games as IAP, and I'd definitely buy my favorites even though I could play them for free anyway. As far as this goes... they should have made this capable of installing ROMs and invested in selling whatever ones they have rights to. Oh well, hope everyone enjoys! I'll be content with my GBA4iOS for now.

I agree completely. I think one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes was making the Virtual Console a Wii-only marketplace. Sure, it came to Wii U and 3DS, but it would have been in much better shape if Nintendo had done the work to have the Virtual Console on PlayStation, Xbox and computers. I understand why people want Nintendo to make consoles, but when it comes to things like the Virtual Console, I wish they would dabble more as a third-party.

Defunct Games that is amazing hard work. I'm assuming you know about retromags right? I own every single digital magazine myself. But never had a database like yours with all the game reviews and magazines pages etc. I have an idea, you try to put it into Google Excel doc? You can make it read only (permissions settings) and offer that link public, it's a shame you would put so much work and not get it to the public or a reward for it. If you need any digital missing magazines let me know, I'll be happy to help as I have it organized on a 2TB hard drive. As I said if you ever can offer that review list PLEASE don't forget me :)
@DefunctGames
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, RetroMags is a great resource. I have grabbed a lot of those issues when I couldn't find the physical version. I've had pretty good luck tracking down physical versions and adding them to my collection. What I need to do is track down all of those old issues of Edge. Since I'm based in the U.S., getting people to send me issues of Edge has been tricky. So far I've limited the review archive to 1985 - 1998, since those are the reviews that weren't being collected by sites like GameRankings and MetaCritic. I definitely need to figure out how to use the database to my advantage. I'm happy that a lot of people ended up seeing this NES Classic video, so the hard work did pay off.
