The fact is that you DO NOT need to upgrade every year. That is a complete waste of money as phones do not get significant upgrades every year. Upgrading every 3 years is optimum, saving you money and giving you significant upgrades. For example, iPhone 13 Pro Max still holds up well and is still a beast today. You can sell the phone for about 50-70% of its original value on aftermarket and buy the new phone. Without the limitations of different plans, you can even choose to switch to other phones, not upgrade and stay on your phone or switch to other plans if desired. Sticking to the same plan and upgrading every single year is simply NOT WORTH IT.

@nguyendinh2052
24 күн бұрын
You’re wrong, 8400$ is money you paid to buy new phones, but you also have to deduct the money you sell. Here is better detail: If you do a trade-in every time you upgrade (assuming your iPhone is new enough), If you upgrade every year, you're paying 550$ per annum. If you upgrade every-other year, paying 310$ per annum. Every 3 years, paying 250$ per annum. Every 4 years, 225$. Every 5 years, 206$. Every 6 years, 180$. Every 7 years, 164$. Every 8 years, 150$. Every 9 years, 133$. Every 10 years, 120$. So if you buy iphone 17 next year (8 years) you save (550-150)x8 =3.200 compared to upgrade every year, and (250-150)*8=800 $ compared to upgrade every 3 years.

Leasing that phone, I think is a more appropriate term. Think of people leasing a new car for 36 months. Once the time is up, you turn it in because it ain’t yours. You get a new car……to drive around…for another 36 months, rinse repeat. They’ve got “your” phone….or “your” car. Now, if you are Al Gore or Al Sharpton (they own private jets), upgrading to the “latest and greatest”, not biggie. But those of us, non wealthy “land crabs”, we barely make it from paycheck to paycheck., gotta tighten our belts (Beltalowdahs!), and keep on working. Great video and thanks!!!

I have been on the iPhone upgrade program since the iPhone 12 Pro Max dropped. Not once have I taken advantage of it. Usually there’s a family member that is willing to buy my iPhone since they are pretty much brand new and always in a case. Usually I can sell it and get enough money to pay off the loan and take care of the down payment and first month on the new iPhone. One thing to note is that when you sell on Swappa or eBay you now have to verify your identity with your Social Security number and if you gross over $600 in a year you get sent a tax form for you to pay taxes on your gains. I don’t sell on Swappa or eBay anymore because of this. That and I don’t want to give my Social Security to PayPal.

What I’ve been doing for the last couple of years is holding on to an older phone (I’m on the 14 Pro Max now) and with Apple Care I wait til the battery reaches 80 efficiency then I do a swap. Same phone but with a 100% battery that will last me another year or two. I will never lease a phone from a carrier, that’s how they keep you locked in. I live in Southern California. Verizon is introducing their internet wireless. It’s only 35 dollars a month packaged up with their unlimited cell phone plan. If you bring in your own phone the cell phone plan is only 86 dollars a month with the ten dollar discount. Counting my KZitem 10 dollar subscription and taxes I pay 120 dollars a month. And the price is guaranteed for three years. Apple in my area is only offering 400 dollars for my iPhone 13 Pro Max vs 1000 dollars that version offers. But I would lose my ten dollars discount with Verizon per a month. If I kept my iPhone 16 and kept with Verizon for three years, I would save 60 dollars over three years. The price is guaranteed not to go up for three years.

The $800 estimate I used included estimated platform fees and shipping costs! I was assuming a $910 list price. Swappa fees are 6%. PayPal fees are another 3%. And shipping costs with insurance and a signature is roughly another 3%. $910 - ($910 x 0.12) = $800.80. There are a lot of variables though. I just sold my iPhone 15 Pro Max on Swappa, and I got a payout of $858.44. I then spent $15 on shipping. You’re absolutely correct that the fees add up, but I’m still a fan of the overall experience. Not true on the apple iphone upgrade program. I use an MVNO and on the pro phones you designate one of the big carriers but there is no verification. During setup, it wants a number to check with the carrier. Provide any number and it will error. Then an option comes to set up carrier later and then just restore you phone from your old iPhone or back and add your MVNO carrier esim or physical sim and you are good as its unlocked when purchased direct through apple. On the nonpro, this doesn't work as the carrier check is done during the ordering process of the upgrade.

Love the analysis! I am still rocking the iPhone X I got used for super cheap almost 5 years ago. This is just renting your phone in a complicated way. Even if you have loads of money, I don't see the reason to upgrade each year. I think that's quite unreasonable for such tiny upgrades. Maybe after 3-5 years, an upgrade might be nice!

Can you do A video for every 2 or 3 year upgrades? I know it will make a drastic difference in trade-in value and resell value, but I am very curious. if you could explain the advantages and disadvantages on upgrading every 1 year, 2 year, or 3 year + marks? I used to work for T-Mobile and it was always a debate between coworkers. I’m curious which is most cost effective for people.

Does it make sense to buy an iPhone from Apple, have a cheaper phone plan from Tmobile ($55 a month) and keep the phone about 5 years until its not worth much to then buy a new phone from apple? At around $1000 every 5 years for the phone it costs $200 a year for the phone and $660 a year for the phone plan which comes out to about $860 a year to get an iphone every 5 years right?
@vigneshgvs

so the price in "1 year total" at 4:12, is yearly we need to pay? to have a new iphone model+plan each year in that case, keeping the phone forever n using $25 plan - will save money on 2nd year onwards a lot!!! with which we can buy another iphone even...... wow opened my mind

Wow that’s exactly the video and answers I was looking for through whole internet. ❤ bravo and thank you. The only thing I would consider researching and adding into this video would be option of getting a nice deal or buying a new iphone right now for people who are not willing to upgrade iphones every year. What would be the best option I can get from some deals to get the new iphone this year and keep it for the next 3/4 years ? 🎉

what if you want to stop upgrading ? then first option which is a 36 month contract and you stop upgrading each year and so you are stuck with that 36 month contract and have to pay the remainder for those 24 months after the first year isnt it? which is about $33.33 x 24 = $799.

So with the AT&T next up feature, do you get the phones balance wiped and you get the same $1000 promotion on the next phone as well or is it just getting your bounces wiped in early upgrade on your financing without a promotion that’s where I’m confused
@Dave-yy2ts
24 күн бұрын
But I’m confused. What about the yearly $1k credit toward the new phone on Verizon? Also, if I’m still with Verizon, why would I need to pay for two years of service? I’d just make a new contract. Makes me want to call them and confirm as a curious question. But I’m pretty happy with the phone I have. It’s not worth upgrading yearly for minimal improvements.

What do the calculations look like if upgrading every two years instead of every year? I think the numbers change a lot more since you get more from trade in than selling it yourself.

Unfortunately I waited too long to upgrade and they’re only offering $220 for my 12 pro. I guess I’ll just have to keep it and pay full price for the 16 pro this time around

It would be smart to invest your time to get to know the employees (even cleaning staff and security) at Apple because of their employee discounts. I pay about $250 every year when I upgrade my pro max’s. If you’re lucky, you get to use their beefier discount. Only issue is that you’d have to wait until December where they can use the discount on the new phones.

So for T-Mobile the pricing for 3 or more lines is wrong if its a brand new account. personal accounts only get approved for $3,600 for financing phones and you can only do a max of 4 trade in deals per manufacture. so if you wanted to trade in and get 4 iPhone 16 pro max phones. that's $4800. so your down payment right off the bat is $1200. you will still get the bill credits but you will have to pay the difference out of pocket.
@colin6711

If you choose boost mobile financing, does it require you to use their plan for 3 years? And moreover does the phone comes unlocked?
@StetsonDoggett
24 күн бұрын
If you do the Boost Mobile financing with the Infinite Access for iPhone plan, the iPhone is locked to Boost Mobile. You are not technically required to use their plan for 3 years, but similar to the other promotions if you wanted to leave before the end of 3 years you would forfeit any remaining promotional credit and have to buy out the remainder of your phone. If you stick with the plan for 3 years, the phone becomes completely paid off and is yours to keep. You can get the phone unlocked as soon as its paid off. If you do the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program with Boost Mobile, then the iPhone in that case would come unlocked.

another issue when trying to trade in an older iphone....an example... Apple will only give you $50 for a XS max trade in.. but AT&T will give you $350... lesson learned... don't hold onto the old phones unless its still being serviced by Apple via the upgraded iOS.... some older phones get the ios update but its only security updates not the full blown ios update....so know what your older iphone can do and ask if you want to trade it in for a reduced value...

Why are the buy out costs added in? If you buy out your phone, you can sell it for a good chunk of money maybe almost recover the entire buyout cost if the phone is recent. That should be factored into the carrier deals that require to buy our every year and their price will come down.
@StetsonDoggett
24 күн бұрын
Love this idea! But the thing is, if you sell your phone then you won’t have a phone to use for the trade-in deals. So you wouldn’t be eligible for the $1,000 off promotions. You’d effectively just be buying and selling yourself, in which case considering a prepaid carrier with a lower monthly cost will be substantially more affordable.
@dimelo115
24 күн бұрын
In terms of carrier deals I feel like it would be better to include how much people are paying monthly on their service on average, consider family plans and so on. Factoring in the cost of the plan is a bit weird considering most people have to pay a phone bill regardless. There’s a ton of variables here that are missing. 🤷🏾♂️

I did some math myself and it’s cheaper to go with one of these plans and upgrade every year than to buy the phone outright and pick a ‘cheap’ $40 plan. You’d have to keep that phone for 3-4 years just for the monthly payment to average out as less than getting the new phone yearly. And you’re not on as good of a plan
