I’ve recently got my answer to the “Tone is in the fingers” question. During quarantine I’ve listened to hundreds of voice memos of myself from across the years, on electric, acoustic, single coil, humbuckers, fuzz, tubescreamers, this delay, that delay, etc. and I finally know what I sound like regardless what I play. I will say I needed to “play around” all those tones, and I’ve found some tones that help me play more “like myself” than others. It’s a weird thing: when you find your right pedals and right rig, it just sounds like you and you stop thinking about gear.

Weeelllllllll, in the age of industry, old things can quite often be better than new things. Cars and trucks. It's not secret that older trucks, on average, last longer than new trucks. I think it's because there's more going on in new vehicles. More to upkeep. Maintain. Tools- power drills, wrenches, toolboxes- using cheaper parts and materials to make larger quantities to sell more. Old Craftsman tools are better than new ones. That's not subjective, really. So I can understand in some scenarios where older = better. But it definitely doesn't apply everywhere. I don't know enough about/haven't played enough pedals to say one way or the other on them.

One of my favorite arguments is when people go "you said the line 6 POD sounds just like a tube amp and now you're saying a Helix sounds like a tube amp bleeeeh whine whine grumble grumble" The truth is that the old crappy emulations were just the best we had at the time. The ones we have now are bordering on realistic and even those will sound like crap to us in 5-10 years when we have something even more accurate in our hands. Also, comparing everything we have now to tubes is a fool's errand, instead of constantly chasing emulation we should embrace the things solid state and digital excell at.
@Merlincat007

As a fellow electronics guy, I pretty much knew the answers going in, but there is always something to learn. One thing about BBD chips though, is that they're obsolete and all that is widely available are either NOS or cheap copies. The good reissues seem to be harder to get a hold of without spending dollars to tens of dollars for a single chip. But that's also coming from a guy who hasn't yet seriously looked into acquiring them. So take that with a grain of salt.

I see a lot of criticism online where people accuse pedal makers of "copying" a circuit, and it's important to realize that all of the "flavors" or "dishes" are pretty much established. Companies can only give us their unique twist on a classic circuit and add features to it. No one would ever accuse a new restaurant of "stealing" a burger simply because their burger also has a bun, patty, etc.

California has stricter consumer protection laws so if your product is sold in California is has to be up to certain standards and/or have a warning label on it. I think the biggest problem is people with cheap guitars and amps plugging in expensive pedals and expecting to get a famous tone because the artist was using that pedal. Beyond that even, having a squire strat into a solid state combo, buying a tube screamer and not getting the sound of a 59 burst into a plexi lol. Instead of spending hundreds on pedals, ones money would be better spent on a decent set of pickups and a entry level priced tube amp. A nice mexi strat with good pickups into a used hotrod is a realistically attainable good tone, not five $200 dollar pedals. Once you have a decent amp and a decent guitar, then get a delay or an overdrive. It seems more attainable to get a 200 dollar pedal than a 500 dollar amp or guitar, but you are just slowing down your path to a good rig.

Don't judge me but I've never been a 'play through a loud amplifier' kind of electric guitarist, so I missed a whole chunk of knowledge re. 'cleaning up' a tone via rolling off the volume knob until just recently. But are you saying (and hopefully someone in comments can help me out here) that rolling off the volume knob doesn't actually always turn down the volume as much as it does 'clean up' an overdriven tone??
@jonschwieb323
2 жыл бұрын
This is definitely true for a Fuzz Face (with single coils). It will clean up to a sparkly clean with the volume rolled down, without much dip in volume. You can hear the effect (I assume it’s an amp, might be wrong) by listening to Carlos Santana on Black Magic Woman. A little bit into the song he rolls up his volume and you get that extra bite, without a huge jump in volume. I think a tube amp has to be turned up pretty high for this to work. I did it once on a small Fender amp and it was a lot of fun. But normally I can’t turn up loud enough for this trick. Hope that helps. I’m no expert, just sharing what little I know.
@bohenian
2 жыл бұрын
You can clean your overdriven sound by lowering the input volume (guitar volume) to the amp/pedal. Try getting an overdrive and lower your volume until it cleans up. The reason it overdrives is due to clipping as a result of increased input volume. Try screaming at your mic, if your audio processor can handle it, it'll be "clean", if it can't, it will distort. That's how you produce overdrive/distortion in an amp or pedal. I hope I'm using the right terms. You can practically overdrive any amp just by introducing a large amount of volume input (will change depending on the headroom of the amp or wattage). Try using a clean boost to a low wattage amp, it will breakup and distort, while a higher wattage amp will only get louder. Hope I made sense. 😅
@marcsullivan7987
2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I d this all the time w my fuzz pedals (fuzz face topology Fulltone 69, and it also works really well w my DOD Carcosa ), and my strat. Other guitars I own don’t do it nearly as well. I typically set my “unity gain” volume by turning on the fuzz and turning my guitar down to around 4. I set that volume equal to pedal off, guitar volume on 10. Then I can turn the fuzz on an leave it on. When I roll the volume UP to 6, 7….more gain/fuzz, only a little more volume. 8, 9..full fuzz. If I turn the pedal OFF while the guitar volume is on 4, the volume disappears. You should experience this. It’s awesome and quite inspiring. The Sunface he mentioned is also awesome. I’ve borrowed one for a couple weeks.

I love when a good amp including a good drive or fuzz pedal lets me have a really wonderful clean tone when I roll back the volume knob. It's such a great feeling!! Another one that does this besides a good Fuzzface would be my Tim pedal and my Lightspeed pedal. So. much. fun. There's also a thing called "component drift" which leads to my friends original Klon Centaur having drifted to a place that feels so perfect, that no matter what KLONE I brought in to shoot out it lost to his... until recently. (wink). I notice that Josh said if you have "ONE OR TWO BOSS OP AMPS it's better" Agreed. But if you have more than that it gets weird. That's why it's kind of best to have a good op amp at the beginning of the chain like the Peterson StroboStomp HD at the beginning and hey.. a Fender Level Set buffer at the end of a populated pedalboard and NO MORE OP AMPS OR BUFFERS BETWEEN THEM WHEN THEY ARE BYPASSED. It can feel and sound like just being plugged straight into your amp. Josh made this so much fun. His kids must giggle all the time.

"We went to the moon … but we can't make a chip for an overdrive pedal? Do you know how stupid that sounds?" Of course we *could* make it, but no electronics manufacturer *would* make it. They transitioned away from these parts because they developed better technology to do the things that they were intended to do. Guitar effects makers were using these things intentionally at the edge of their capabilities: at the places where they performed incorrectly. Companies who buy these chips in *real* bulk don't want that. They're uninterested in the edge cases. And semiconductor manufacturers have provided that. They've moved past those old crappy technologies. But it's explicitly those old crappy technologies that we like the sound of. We could recreate the manufacturing facilities that produced them, but it would cost _many_ millions of dollars to recreate those facilities, so that they could generate enough transistors to saturate the guitar pedal market? What's that going to be? Apparently there are fewer than 1.5million guitar pedals sold every year. Even if they could be sold for $10 per (while NOS germanium transistors are being sold for about $1 per), that would still probably take 10 years just to make their money back. So, yeah, it's technologically feasible; it's just not economically feasible.

For those who don't understand Q8, a lot of your tone will come from the 1000s of unseen hours of practising scales, chords, knowing theory, muscle memory, etc.

I disagree in part. 'they don't make 'em like they used to' isn't just an old Geezerism. Cars and electronics are more efficient for sure, and obviously computers have gotten far far smaller and now we can hold one in our hand (in fact they are taking over our lives) But people covet vintage things for a reason, especially in the world of guitars. I've gotten a different tone from one pedal the same brand, same year, and the same goes for amplifiers, the same for Hammond Organs. The actual manufacture of components is different then the way it used to be, it's the process, not the materials being used (not necessarily) . We went to the moon in 1969, and Chuck Yeager broke the airspeed record around that time also, why haven't we done that again?

Your discussion about NOS parts was interesting but a little off base near the end imo, when you said we should be able to build old parts. I work in semiconductors and you’d be surprised how minuscule the market for old, outdated parts used only by a few hundred small companies buying in the hundreds, maybe thousands. Often they have to be obsoleted to make room for parts being used in the hundreds of millions by the big tech guys. It’s very expensive to keep a part running in a fab, and even worse now that the supply chain is so backed up and fabs are running at maximum capacity. As an audio enthusiast and guitar player it breaks my heart, but the business and new tech wins out. It’s why you can’t just go buy germanium transistors that easily, or why I got laughed at for asking a professor about vacuum tubes.

Josh is 100% correct. The parts are not impossible to reproduce. They are simply not profitable to produce anymore. From a technological and manufacturing perspective, building those old parts is trivial, but it just can't be done in an economically feasible way.

If people played their guitars as much as they argue about all this crap none of it would matter because they’d sound good through anything they plug into.
