I made this mistake as well. I used garden soil for potted pepper plants. I added perlite thinking that would make it less dense and provide airation to let the roots breath. Once i transplanted my pepper plant in less than an hour all the leafs were droopy meaning the plant was suffocating. I ended up mixing the garden soil with some potting mix that I had made up primarily of peat moss. I mixed in the peat moss and made the soil become less compact and more loose. I transplanted that same pepper plant in the new soil mixture and it works. The plant revived and has new growth.

If you accidentally buy the garden soil, just add/mix sand to it for drainage. 2 parts garden soil and 1 part sand.

Partly correct. I found an excellent topsoil and added perlite and a tiny bit of peat and my pants did better than ever. Garden soil is primarily peat and forest products, potting soil is too.

You are only partially correct. You can use garden soil in a pot. Just make sure you use two part of dirt to one part of garden soil. You save a lot of money by doing simple mixing.

If I bought garden soil for container planting is there anything I can do to help it drain better? Is drainage the only issue?
@agbata
4 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can mix it with some perlite & peat moss. Peat moss is very cheap for the amount that you get, and it will help stretch the garden soil. The job of both is to make the soil more fluffy and to help with drainage. I did this with most of my vegetables earlier this year, and they did just fine. When I had them potted in pure garden soil, it was way too dense and wet, so the roots couldn't get ample oxygen. Hope that helps!

The other issue is that compared to compost it's much lower in nutrients, so you will find that you have to apply a liquid feed earlier than you would if it was a compost mix.

The best thing you can do is home compost! Keeps biodegradable scraps out of landfill (where they would decompose anaerobically and produce methane), makes your trash less heavy/gross, and produces lots of lovely FREE compost for your garden. Bagged compost like this uses lots of fuel to ship it around and lots of plastic to bag it up. Home compost is a win win win for the environment and your wallet. As well as vegetable peelings and law clippings, you can also compost tissue, used paper towels, and even pizza boxes or other greasy paper. The paper and card actually helps balance the heap. Good luck with composting, everyone!

@@marykay8587 Make a wooden frame and start pilling any garden waste (lawn clippings) and kitchen scraps (not meat, just vegetable peelings) in there. Add cardboard to help balance it if it looks too wet. And then leave it for a year and the worms will do the work!
