I am a high school teacher in Istanbul, working at a very privileged school teaching the smartest kids in the country who sometimes happen to be very picky and dissatisfied when it comes to teachers and classes. Although I have been working there for 3 years now, and really worked my ass off, I felt insecure and stupid for most of the time, doubting myself and feeling overwhelmed. (I am very self-conscious, introverted and too self critical) One day one of my 11th graders came up to me and said “There is only one person in this world who has more vision than you and that person is Batman. And obviously he’s pretty fictional so… yeah…” I didn’t expect anything like that and it made me feel accepted and part of the family for the very first time...

I have never told my uncle that, I simply loved to spend time with him. When I was 19 he passed away, after that I have told my aunt how I have felt about him, and that I have always wished he was my father. She told me he already knew, and told her after one of my visits that "This boy has too big a heart to be a *insert our family name*" (their father was also abusive and alcoholic). I am still grateful for the times I have spent with him, and he made me believe that I will be able to break that family pattern. Now I am 31, have an amazing wife, and a daughter on the way. I have never felt that whole before and he made me believe, that I can do that

Might seem strange but my dad said "I help other people because it makes me feel good and it just happens to make them feel good too" He always went out of his way to help everyone and go the extra mile and i never understood why he was like that until i got older and i try to follow that example

Idk if this counts but basically there was a kiosk near my old highschool and it opened 10min before my school day started , it was near some apartments and those were mostly owned by elders. So one day I was walking to or from school and this old man , who would always wait for the kiosk to open so he could buy a newspaper (I would see him read it outside sometimes) suddenly called out to me when I was passing by and said ”Excuse me but you remind me so much of my first wife” and at that time I was around 14-15 , This man was about 70-80 years old and I got really chocked for a sec. He followed up with ”Im sorry, I didnt mean to startle you” I said its alright and he said ”Ive never been able to forget her , we were married only for a short time before I lost her”. I said im sorry for the loss and asked how long they were married , only 5 years and then she died from ovarian cancer , he married some years later and had children but he never forgot about her and it was the reason he had a divorce is because his second wife didnt like that he remembered his first wife. He said that he liked seeing me before getting his things at the kiosk because it felt like a piece of her was still alive , seeing me every morning .After that we would greet eachother every morning and I kinda wondered what happened to him since I didnt see him as often snd then eventually not at all - but that was when I was 16. He probably passed away since he seemed to be quite old and frail , he had a walking frame too.

My husband has called me Sunshine since I was 14yrs old. He says aside from my eyes and smile lighting up a room, that I was the light at the end of the tunnel that provided him the warmth that he was missing. (For context my husbands mom passed away when he was 15, he continued to live in the home by himself with no electricity, running water, or food. He weighed more than 200lbs at 15yrs old n when I met him he was starving so bad that he looked like just skin and bones. He didn't tell me or anyone else that he had no food. He was embarrassed. And here I came, providing him with meals, showers, clothes without him asking for any of it. And he says he will never forget that I pulled him out of that dark place and that he knows if I wouldn't have came along he probably wouldn't be here today. And for that, he will never stop loving me and calling me his Sunshine) 😊

I can’t remember exactly what he said but he said I was the nicest little thing and I had a heart of gold and I didn’t have a mean bone in my body and couldn’t hurt a fly... I had a narcissistic family growing up. They taught me I was dirt. So this was different.

I thought about this while I was watching...and, I couldn't come up with one single thing, something beautiful, someone has said to me. I've always been told I was beautiful and pretty...which are pretty shallow things. I'm well educated and have a degree in science...nobody has said I am smart. I rescue old, bony horses of the slaughter truck, get them healthy and they retire on my farm. I rescue beaten and broken dogs, that now sleep in my bed...nobody has said I'm a kind, loving, compassionate person. It seems people think my only redeeming quality is how I look...I am so much MORE, and I will continue to tell myself that.

I used to be a cashier at Walmart. One day I was busily manning a self checkout area, people coming in and going out rapid fire. I'm running this way and that, clearing error codes, directing traffic, checking people's carts, trying to be pleasant throughout., when a man stopped me. He was older, maybe in his forties, and he smiled and said, "Now I don't want you to take this the wrong way or think I'm hitting on you or anything, but I just wanted you to know that you have the most beautiful smile I've ever seen." Like, BOOM! Wow! That was amazing! Just a random, genuine, heartfelt compliment. I've treasured that memory ever since!

The most beautiful thing I've ever been told is my mom very proudly exclaiming "You've changed so much, I feel like you're yourself again." After a traumatic 5 year relationship where I really lost myself. After I got out of that relationship I worked really hard to mend some other relationships, to work on myself and to trust myself again. It's been a whole journey, and that was a major turning point in my life. I am so happy with where I am now.

OK this is something my husband said to me a couple of years ago and it was the moment I fell deeper in love with him then ever. For some backstory I was always really bad at ball games and through my childhood I sat out on countless games because I was self conscious and I didn't want to ruin the game for others. I remember birthday parties where I sat with the mums pretending to have a sore belly while the other kids played. That day my husband was playing outside with our son and it was the first time it came up. I said "I can't throw a ball." To that he replied: "Ok..why don't you show me how you do it and we will see how you can improve." I know it doesn't sound like much but he absolutely blew my mind with those few words. It was so simple yet nobody ever said it to me before. He gave me grace and he taught me to give grace to myself. He showed me that I mattered and that they wanted me there. I was 27 years old and for the first time in 20 years I was playing with a ball. And it was so. much. fun! It didn't matter at all how good or bad I was. I hope this makes sense to others, for me it was golden, and I apply it to everything in life now ❤️

10:34 I definitely resonate with the "I'm proud of you" one but in a different way. My parents did say they were proud of me a lot when I was following the path they wanted for me, but it always felt hollow since I knew that it was contingent on an idea of me. But when a friend or mentor says they're proud of me, esp when I'm least expecting to hear those words, I almost always tear up cuz they're talking about the actual me.

And holds dreams in your heart and reality in your mind, that’s always what I wanted to do.” I was told by an librarian who I knew for year’s after she told me she was retiring. And she told me I was good to the core and that she saw me being happy once I leave my hometown and she predicted my future. The second person was my mother who was mentally abusive when I was growing up... After I hadn't seen her for years she called me out of the blue and said she was sorry... She said I was everything she never could be and I always fought when she couldn't do that for herself... Now we love each other and I understand why she was the way she was

Back in the early 90s when I was a History teacher, I ran into one of my former Year 8 students who I hadn't seen in years. I asked him what he was doing with himself in his life and he told me that he was at university studying to be a History teacher. I sarcastically asked: "You want to be a History teacher in spite of having me as a History teacher?" His reply: "It's because of having you as a History teacher." Thirty years later and I still get choked up at his words.

I'm the oldest in my family so I always feel a pressure to do great things and become an example to my siblings. So when I make a mistake, or not being the expected example that I need to be, I feel very down on myself. But when my parents, grandparents, extended family tell me that they are proud of me, it really hits hard and I really feel accomplished.

My 13 year old son and I were out apartment hunting and we found the perfect place. I met with the landlord and she told me the terms and I didn’t have enough money for the deposit. We really wanted that apartment though as we were living in a share rental that wasn’t working out. We were discussing it and how I could come up with the deposit and he said, “Give it your all”. It made me feel like he had so much confidence in me, made me feel powerful. I discussed it with my employers and they loaned me the money. We got the place.
