I 3D print my own spools. Neutrally buoyant so it doesn’t fall into the abyss if it slips and costs cents to print a new one if I do loose it.

The yellow SMB usually signal emergency for diver down under. The orange one is meant for signalling caution of diver down below or a message attached at the top of the sausage .

Just don't lose your nice DSMB! Its safety equipment. A closed style DSMB is much better than any of the open bottom type - and you can use the safer oral inflation method that keeps the webbing and line away from your regs which are snag hazards.

A lot of expensive lightweight aluminum spools have really sharp edges. I think it's ridiculous they don't smooth the milled holes. Depending on how you set it up, it can sever the line
@ScubaDiverMagazine

100% we bought some non-branded spools from China to test them out and the finish on the edges was sharp enough to wear the line over time. And if you dent an edge it can create a sharp edge so you do need to inspect them regularly

During inflation it happend to me to get a lift upwards (bag of air alright, nothing fancy here). Is it better to deflate the BCD during use of the dSMB (maybe use the delating air for the dSMB) since it will pull you up anyways to counteract the boyancy of the dSMB?

If only the Apeks spool is only £70. Even the 15m version has gone up to £88 RRP. The 3 bigger sizes are well over £100. 😱

They are very expensive. If they made a plastic spool with the orange line and yellow leader that would probably be a popular cheaper alternative.

#AskMark Sticking with the dSMB. Is there a difference between the Orange and Yellow as a surface indicator?
@ScubaDiverMagazine
3 ай бұрын
Yes, the first difference is a slight change in visibility in certain conditions. It's not a huge difference and only in very specific light conditions where a yellow buoy can be harder to see against the yellow sun low in the sky. The two colours can also have meanings in different circles. Some dive teams use a yellow dSMB to convey emergency, where an orange one is just marking a location. If they have a problem in the water but can't ascend straight to the surface, they'll send a yellow buoy up to alert the surface support to prepare themselves.

#AskMark Hello I'm in the market for a decent dpv / scuba scooter. while looking deeply into this I discovered what seems to a scooter scam. youtube is flooded with BS "top x" or people with their kids using them in reviews for these devices. they contain the same rebranded scooters for the most part... Sea Doo, Yamaha, Nautica.... all of which appear to be glorified pool toys for kids. even the models retailing for over $1k. Definitely some type of slimy market misinformation going on. could you do a video on this and possibly recommend some credible DPVs like the DiveX BlackTip. I think this would really help the community from buying junk. Thanks

Pretty sure what they mean by SMB, in this instance, is a safety sausage just like that, but the kind without an overinflation valve of any kind. This is, technically, the definition of an SMB while a dSMB would be the kind with any kind of overinflation protection. So an SMB is quite capable of being inflated (usually just via that tube you blow in or maybe that you can use your inflator hose on). The SMB (no overinflation protection) has the danger of, if "overinflated", in the water that it will simply blow a hole by the time it gets to the surface. If you're careful how much you inflate it then the SMB may be fine, but there's always that risk of blowing it out, is all. Essentially I think that's a slightly different answer to the one you've given in this video.
@DexterBelgium

The reference too "having to occasionally reinflate at the surface" seems to me to indicate Mark had the right end of the stick, as with a SMB that is the one thing you won't ever need to do.

#askmark, is there an increased risk by using yellow fins when diving with sharks?
@ScubaDiverMagazine
3 ай бұрын
There is some evidence of sharks having a preference for the colour yellow. But it isn't a definite trigger for them. They won't see the colour yellow and attack. It is something to be aware of though. The contrast of brighter colours like yellow and white and shiny jewellery will catch their attention. If I only had yellow fins I wouldn't skip a dive that might have sharks. I would just be a bit more aware of my movements and position in the water. But if I were planning a trip that was focused on sharks then I would leave them at home.

I ❤❤❤my XS Scuba Pink dSMB. It’s about 6ft in length. Has a weight pocket so it can stand up easier at the surface & when deployed from my manta or finger reel. I can inflate it with my alternate, low pressure BCD hose or manually. It has a pressure release valve & stays pressurized. I bought it 7 years ago because: 1. I average 50 dives a year 2. I dive in a dumb boat driver area (Pompano Beach, FL) meaning anyone can rent a boat & ignore all the rules of boating & claim my head is a coconut as their excuse for running me over 3. In a two foot wave you can’t see cheap ones, they are too short between waves 4. It doubles as a lift bag. Memorial wknd I lifted an 11 lbs anchor out of the reef. Dive charter was happy to pick up my find as I sent it to the surface 20 min into my 60 min dive at 65 ft.

#AskMark spool or reel for deploying dSMB? pros and cons?
@ScubaDiverMagazine

It tends to be proportional to glove thickness and how many tools I need to use during the dive. Personally I prefer spools. Fewer moving parts and they're a lot cheaper to replace. They can be a little more fiddly in colder waters with thick gloves but, there are ways around that. Reels tend to be bigger so you have something to hold onto and a ratchet mechanism so if you let go it doesn't go very far. And if your hands are full they're easier to use.
