i did martial arts for years and my instructor would kick you if you had an open fist while punching. strength of the punch is correlated to density of your fist (obviously) so more mass in a smaller area. plus you can do a good job of breaking your fingers punching with an open fist, which seems a bit worse than over-flexing a tendon. then again you need to be hitting with your knuckles, not a flat fist anyways

Might help your hand but mass times excelleration means a more sense compacted fist will have more force. Also the law of inertia says an object with more mass will not accept the dissipation of energy (two cars hit the small car bounces off) so by having a closed fist and a dense fist that you squeeze it won't take most of the impact your target will. So more damage for them and less for you!! I just worry loose fingers get snagged on clothes or their hands and break your fingers. Seen it happen.
@YourUpstairsNeighbor
5 ай бұрын
This is an incorrect way of thinking about force. Your fist will receive the same amount of force as the object being struck, whether it's closed or not. In your car example, the small one moves because it requires less force to move an object with less mass. Both cars experience the same force, but the smaller experiences more acceleration from the force.)
@darkwraithknyack126
5 ай бұрын
@YourUpstairsNeighbor I don't think so, the object with less mass experiences a more severe change in velocity and smaller cars experience more force because of it. Yeah also better safe than sorry, having your fingers sticking out leaves room for some mistake where they get caught on something like hands or their clothes or another fist or anything. Closed tight fist is less likely to have a finger broken!

Unfortunately you have the maximum strenght of a bareknuckle punch if you actually squeeze before or while hitting. The amount of impact you can generate is akin to the strenght of a blunt object swung as hard as you can. The bag is deceptive, you can slap your knuckles and get nice gunshot sound, but if you punch with a solid grip you are going to penetrate the bag and the explosion sound will be far more "full". Expect the hands to get a bit of damage, after 12 years of mma and muay thai and plenty of matches it was still shockingly hard to practice this stuff. My body was used to patterns that generate strenght but my hands were weak despite weight lifting and physical labors. Try a makiwara, build one or buy one, the basic is very simple. It will change all of your punches bio mechanics for what concerns the wrists. Look at a bit of goju ryu or kyokushin makiwara training and start by there

It's true. I had a professional boxer in a gym and we had mma gloves on. He broke his hand right off my forehead.
