I always notice after a luthier sets up my soundpost and bridge per only measurements i always end up moving the bridge slightly forward and the violin opens up more. Why is this? And i find if its a good instrument to begin with the soundpost location is more forgiving. Just make sure it isnt too tight or too loose.

Another very informative video! I loved the graphics done offline, so Edgar can focus on his explanation.

What you should do is contact Wayne Szalinski. He built a shrink ray in his basement. A movie was made about it called "Honey I Shrunk the Kids." Maybe he can shrink you down to fulfill your dream.

Thank you, engineer, for these educational videos. I only have a question. How do I know the distance of the 3mm sound column behind the bridge? Is there a tool to measure this?

@@einsam_aber_frei What happens with the Sound if the soundpost is too long. Does it damage the instrument?

Yes, it could damage the instrument. I believe it could split the top.

Nice explanation for the basics, but there are millions of variations and each instrument is different. You can rotate the soundpost, change the angle, change the place... Every small variation will change the sound of the instrument, it will make it harder, softer, it will benefit the bass, the treble, etc, etc... It is extremely complicated.

My A and E strings are less responsive than G and D. Plus A string has a wolf tone in first position on C# sound. 1. In what direction should I move the soundpost in order to make A and E string more responsive. 2. Or maybe longer soundpost would help? 3. Is it ok to mark with pencil on bottom plate where previously soundpost was placed for references, how to mark it effectively?

Well, this sounds dumb, but what are wolf tones? Let alone that, what does the bass bar do? What does the sound post do?
@davearonow65

A wolf tone is a tone that goes "Waaaa-ooooooow".

I amnot a violin maker, but as far as my experience goes, you need more tension if the wolftones are out of control. You could try to pull it more outside. If you have to pull it outside the right food of the bridge, it is definitely too short. Edgar says in a different video, that you should move forward to make the e string stronger. You can also try to do that. But don't try to completely eliminate the wolf tones. It will eliminate your sound quality as well.

Love these videos! I'm learning cello and these help me get in touch with how my instrument is doing what it is doing so much! I may never build a violin or even try to re set a fallen sound post. But I can better understand why I am paying an expert to fix it.

What happens if the violin sound post is not 6mm diameter? Does it change the position? How does the diameter effect sound?

Some said, at a certain range, the smaller diameter of the sound post lets the board to be vibrating more freely

If my violin is sounding fine, is it necessary for a luthier to check and adjust the sound post once a year?
@purnachandrapanigrahi9355
2 ай бұрын
readjustment of sound post position is not needed if the sound is good. the sound post once positioned does not deviate from its position itself unless u disturb it. When all the strings are removed/ loosened, it may fall down, if the length of the sound post is less.

hi Edgar, thank you for sharing this wonderful information, may I ask if bigger instruments, such as cello and upright bass have same positioning methods? I play the upright bass and feels like there's not enough bass, however, I feel like I am moving the soundest really far from the bridge already (about 2-3 cm)

20 to 30mm is too far behind the bridge. The outcome from that position will be lack of attack and focus on the notes. A normal position would be 8 to19mm behind the foot edge. The soundboard may also distort or crack at the soundpost position. Bridge force has too much leverage. To get more bass one can shift the post out away from the bass bar. Not too much outside the bridge foot pattern though and as the post moves out it may have to be shorter.

i hope you mean 3cm and NOT 3mm
@peterstephen1562

Yes definitely 3mm behind the bridge. 30mm would be very dull sounding and likely cause the belly to distort. It is better to avoid the use of centimetres and stay with metres and millimetres. Less possibility of confusion and the math is easier.
