Last year, I found a large Tree of Heaven up near the cabin. I applied a two pronged approach to destroying it. First I girdled the tree to stop the flow of nourishment up the phloem and hormones down the cambium. This alone will kill the tree while it stand erect on the stump. This is a convenient way to get good, dry firewood after about a year. Secondly, I applied mixture of triclopyr and diesel fuel to the trunk from the ground up to about 18 inches. This wasn't necessary but it did drive an extra nail in the coffin. The diesel fuel is a carrier that soaks the solution into the tree bark, ploem and cambium.
About a month ago, my friend John and I took down a larger Ailanthus in the back yard of our Heartwood home. I let it lay there for a month and did not mow the surrounding area. I expected to see a rash of suckers and sprouts as a result of this totally mechanical and traumatic method of removal. Sure enough. In this video you will see that the whole back yard was covered in Ailanthus sprouts. The tree from a year ago died peacefully without generating new growth.
