Is it worthwhile to make time for a wine tour during your trip to Portugal’s Algarve region? We visited three vineyards within an easy drive of Albufeira( • What's it like to live... ), one of the Algarve’s most popular destinations to find out:
Quinta Dos Vales (quintadosvales...) is a 44-hectare estate with over one hundred works of art created by the vineyard’s owner, Karl Heinz Stock. All of their wine labels incorporate his magnificent work. In addition to wine tastings and tours, you can blend your own bottle in a workshop or give winemaking a try by purchasing a parcel on the vineyard. We feel quite tempted to attempt both.
A 2020 Grace Viognier is the white wine we tried from Quinta dos Vales. According to its bottle notes, “In the nose, you’ll notice fruits such as mango and tangerine, which are paired with balanced acidity and some salinity. A well-structured wine with a persistent finish.”
Morgado Do Quintão (www.morgadodoq...) is the longest-running vineyard that we visited. It’s been in the same family since the early 1800s when it was founded by the Count of Sives. In addition to wine tastings, they offer lunches, dinners, oysters with sparkling wine at sunset, and cooking workshops.
We tried the 2022 Branco from Morgado Do Quintão. It’s made from the local grape, Crato Branco. According to its label, the wine is “fresh in the nose, and its creaminess and mineral profile makes it perfect for pairing with fish and seafood dishes.”
Adega Convento do Paraiso at Quinta de Mata Mouros (conventodopara...) gets its name from the lands it is partially located on, the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Paraíso, or the Convent of Our Lady of Paradise. The convent was founded in the 15th century and was decommissioned in the 19th. Less than a 10-minute drive from Silves Castle, a day trip spent exploring both history and wine could be made to Silves. Fun (maybe) fact: It’s said that a tunnel that linked Silves Castle and Quinta de Mata Mouros was used by the Moors to escape the castle when it came under attack by Christians.
We gave the 2021 Convento do Paraiso Branco a try. It’s an Alvarhino. The bottle doesn’t say more than that about it, but we can tell you that it tastes light and crisp; and that, like the others, we found it to be a delight.
